From Cadillac to Genesis

My original review of my Genesis G80 was 5 stars. I traded in a Cadillac. I updated my review, after owning it for 3 years and selling it. I traded it in for a GM car. I only had 6,000 miles on it so why would I get rid of it? It comes down to issues I had, and the lack of response Genesis had to what can only be described as either poor technology choices and lack of concern about the impact on Customers. I bought this car new in January 2019 and by that summer was having issues with Sirius/XM and the head unit. I wasn't alone as comments on the Genesis Owners Forum demonstrate. Genesis was of zero help. The head unit would freeze up and they acted as if it was strictly a Sirius/XM problem. I also often had issues when using Apple CarPlay. The latest issue was with Genesis Connected Services which I view as their version of OnStar. I have OnStar in my other vehicles and want Connected Service for the same reasons, crash support, stolen vehicle assistance, etc. Well, after renewing Connected Services for another year, I got a brief email from Genesis telling me that after December 2022, Connected Services will no longer work. This is apparently because my 2019 G80 has a 3G modem and there is no way to upgrade it. My 2018 GMC Sierra doesn't have that problem because GM has been preparing for the 3G issue since 2016. The other insult to injury is that not all 2019 G80's were affected because some have 4G modems. It's the price I paid for buying it in January. So, the buttons on the mirror will look nice but provide no function. There are several other reasons I dumped the G80 and moved back to GM, but I will never buy another Genesis. For this, my second update, I'm still happy with my Denali because everything works as it should, including self-parking. Will never look at another Genesis.

My 3rd consecutive Genesis

My 2020 G80 was a no brainer for me when my 2018 G80 lease was up. I started my love of the Genesis in 2012 with the prior generation, when it was under the Hyundai nameplate. In 2015 I leased the current generation Genesis (still under Hyundai nameplate). 2018 marked my 1st under its own division. I say the G80 is a no brainer simply because there isn't any other vehicle within its price category that gives you as much as three G80 does. I've always had the 3.8 V6 and never once thought I needed more power. I enjoy the ultra quiet cabin as well as the exceptional seat comfort. The 3 years of Genesis valet is icing on the cake, never having to return to the dealer (for any reason) the valet service is simple thru the Genesis app on my smart phone. My car is picked up at my place of employment, a loaner dropped off and then returned when service is completed (nicely detailed, I might add). I always choose one convenience option package up from the base model, which gives me anything from smart cruise to lane departure to 3d view cameras to aid in parking, also included is heated seats front and back as well as air conditioned front seats. The Upgraded Lexicon sound system is among the best I've experienced in a vehicle. My combined MPG (mostly city than highway) is always around 21 mpg. I really hoped the GV80 suv was available when my lease was up but I'll look forward to that in the next 30 months while I enjoy my 4 Genesis vehicle.

Great car, 3.8 has really good acceleration and the base model has all the safety features anyone would need. pre collision warning, lane assist, pedestrian crossing, etc. The interior is easy to use and very functional with a smooth quiet and comfortable ride. No regrets, this is by far the nicest car I have ever purchased and for the money it feels like a steal. I was very weary about purchasing a Genesis but after test driving others in the same class, most cost thousands more without the same features I went back to the G80 and I haven't looked back. Great car even better when you consider the price tag to its rivals. Update: *Just over 18 months and I’m still loving this car. I’ve got over 20k on this car and everything is still going strong. Love this car.

Excellent Car!

Bought the 3.3 turbo (Sport) version after having leased the 3.8 AWD for 3 years prior. Satisfies most all my wants from the 3.8L, much better handling, great acceleration, much younger demo target (I'm 50) than the 3.8L which seems to attract the older crowd. Still the mpg is a major downside for the car but beyond that it's just a well built, well thought through, excellent car to drive. I've got a 1hr+ commute each way to work so I need some isolation, comfort, and when traffic permits a little joy on my drive which I get daily in the G80 sport. Also the Audio system by Lexicon is top notch, combined with the noise-isolated cabin my drive is as relaxing as can be. Contrary to the poster above, there is an auto trunk shut button if that is important to you! While I'm leasing this car I'm buying it at the end of my lease for sure.

Had been comparing this car to Lexus ES and Toyota Avalon but got a much better bang for the buck with the pricing and incentives on the G80. Only had it a short while but am extremely impressed with all the features on the car. Like another reviewer, wished the rear seats folded down and it would be nice to have ventilated front seats but maybe that would be too greedy. Excellent fit, finish and comfort. Had a blurb when the battery died while the car sat in my garage. Dealer found no problem and tested the battery over 24 hours. Suggested locking the car even in garage (which I rarely did afterwards) to limit draws by some of the sensors. This happened a second time and again service did not find the cause. My first lease and I may purchase it at lease end although a bit peeved about that power loss issue.

The best quality, luxury, service, ride in a car is the Genesis. I have the G80 and it is by far better than any other car previously leased. Service is outstanding - they pick up my car, service it, detail it and fill the tank with gas before dropping if off in my driveway. It is self driving, heated seats front and back, smart cruise, comfortable on long trips, luxury all around. Just love it.

2020 G80 5.0 V8

I just took delivery of a 2020 G80 5.0 Ultimate AWD model. Last year for the G80 V8. This car is impressive in so many ways. It may not quite match the German turbo V8 cars for power (it's naturally aspirated, not turbocharged), but for $30,000+ less, it is very impressive nonetheless. I think 420 HP is plenty for me. It's more power than you can use most of the time. Effortless cruising, passing and highway entry. In addition, Genesis is rated higher than the German brands for reliability. If you don't need the perceived "snob appeal" of a German car, the Genesis is the smart buyer's choice. Great warranty, 5 years maintenance and concierge service seal the deal. After 2 years, the car has been absolutely reliable, though I should expect it would be, with only 23,000 km (a little over 14,000 miles) on the odometer. I just had my second service visit (oil and filter, cabin air filter, various inspections) and of course, this is included in the price of the car, whether you lease or buy.

not sure why some reviewer compare this to an Azera or there is not enough luxury and/or talk smack about Korean cars. The Genesis will definitely keep pace with Mercedes and BMWs. I have owned two Mercedes E430 and SLK in the past. Now I can truly love to be able to enjoy a luxury car and keep $10 to $20k in my wallet. Also, Genesis comes with 5 years bumper to bumper warranty and a 10 years powertrain warranty. Plus a bunch of awards.... Unfortunately, there are way too many uneducated consumers out there that enjoy pissing their cash in the wind.

Great car with lots of safety, comfort and passenger room. Great free service for 3 years. My dealer is rated number 1 in service for the entire USA. Will be bringing the car in for free total detailing shortly. Also, they fill up the gas tank and hand wash the car every time the car is in for service. Just ordered latest map and media updates from Genesis web site at no cost. Will be driving to Florida in November. This car is fabulous on long trips and very comfortable and safe to drive.

Had my g80 for 3 weeks now. Its a nice car, but it’s hardly a BMW or E class. Electronics do the job but not intuitive. A site map in the manual should be added. Only 1 USB port in a car with no CD is really bad. If you want to listen to your music you will need to load up your phone or download to a flash drive and disconnect you phone. Neither should be necessary for $50,000 vehicle. Console does not lock, so forget leaving the car with the valet. Road noise is not worthy of this class car. Nice features like a fence, but it stops short as you cannot set the fence fron the Genesis app. Dont get me wrong, its a nice car. But I wish I spent the extra money for the E class.

Reading all the reviews on this car sounded wonderful. I haven't had a new car in over 7 years so when researching I found this car appeared to rate with the Lexus and BMW with a lower price but with all the features. The reviews boasted that this was the luxury car of the year. Not in my book. I chose the G80. It is an ok ride but after having a Cadillac and use to that comfort this ranks way below. The inside feels stiff and boxed in. The trunk is rather small and I would have a hard time getting in 2 sets of golf clubs. The trunk has an automatic release inside and the new feature is the auto open trunk when you stand behind with your key in hand. All nice and good but there is no auto shut button. I have to slam the trunk shut myself. After complaining to the dealer about it I was told to just take my frustrations out when shutting the trunk. How embarrassing. Granted all my fault I didn't look the car over well enough before signing the paperwork. I do not plan to keep this car long and will definitely go with Lexus, Infiniti, etc. the next purchase around. In the meantime, steer clear if you are looking for a REAL luxury car.

First the G 80 is much more expensive. The brakes don't brake as fast. The steering isn't as nimble. The rear area has less headroom. The Infinity stereo had more power in the Azera and sounds better than the G 80's.. It's hard to see out the pillars on the G 80. Better legroom in the Azera

2019 G80 3.3t Sport

I cam to this vehicle from a 2015 Genesis 3.8 AWD, which provided flawless service for some 6 years and will remain in the family. The 3.3t feels like a bigger power upgrade than the 5.0 V8 even though it isn't. Peak torque on the V8 sits way up high in the rev range, so like the 3.8 V6, you have to rev it out to get it to move. The 3.3t just pulls. Any gear, any rpm, any road speed. Some very useful tech upgrades versus the 2015 car as well - adaptive cruise, auto-leveling and cornering LED headlights, active lane-keep assist and Android Auto / Apple CarPlay are a few that I really enjoy. The adaptive suspension is another significant hardware upgrade. Only downside is that fuel economy takes a very much expected hit. Comfortable, whisper-quiet, composed and fast. I'm loving it. Many months further along and my opinion hasn't changed. Strong acceleration and very composed handling remain the dynamic strengths. Interior styling and comfort routinely draw praise from those accompanying me on a drive. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

Good Luxury Car for the Price

silk, 05/14/2024
2019 Genesis G80 5.0 Ultimate 4dr Sedan (5.0L 8cyl 8A)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

I have owned the 2019 V8 5.0 Ultimate for 3 years. There is currently 25k miles on the car. My overall view is that for the price it is a good deal compared to luxury features you would expect from a Lexus or a Mercedes at a much lower cost. I have had no major problems with the car, but I don't drive it much, maybe 1000 miles a year all highways. Only a minor problem with the sunroof rattling when I hit a bump which I just live with. The main thing I don't like about the car is it is not fun to drive in the city. It just feels heavy not nimble. My 2006 Infiniti M45 is much nimbler and fun to drive. Although my M45 has 335 HP compared to 425 HP for the G80 the M45 feels like it has more torque. The G80 is a great highway car - very fast acceleration from 50 to 100, incredibly good sound system and electronics. Comfortable ride very quiet. More of a cruiser than a sports sedan.

We like this vehicle for its overall comfort and performance. Issues have been, costly and difficult head light repacement ($400 including labor for a bulb!) If it had been the entire assembly, $1,500 which they wanted paid for without diagnosing first. We are on the third set of tires with less than 75K miles and the biggest issue I have is the lack of Genesis dealers in NY. It is a hour and a half drive for us to take it to a dealer when in NY for the summer.

I drove this car for about a month and decided that it wasn't what I had expected. The comfort that this so-called luxury car isn't there compared to others of its class. Something doesn't feel right about the braking on this vehicle. Even though it's designed in California and Germany, the car still feels like a Hyandai, a Korean car. Overall, not worth the money.

Purchased a 2019 Genesis G80 3.3T Sport a few weeks ago for $39k. It had 31k miles. I traded in a 2020 Prius Prime for it. I traded in a perfectly good hybrid for a gas-only vehicle because this is a second vehicle I use mainly for road trips. Since I wasn't driving much, comfort became more important than fuel efficiency. My primary is a 2020 Kia Niro EV lease I use for day-to-day driving. EV is king for local driving but I still prefer gas for long trips. I connected a Comma Three with Openpilot which turns this into a wonderful highway cruiser. My favorite feature is the Lexicon 17 speaker sound system which is the best I've ever heard. The seats are fantastic and the quality of the interior is top-notch. Also, since used Genesis have a 5-year, 60k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty so I still have 2 years and $29k left on it.

I love the style of this vehicle. It came with windows being tinted. Have a nice sound system and different features to switch up the way it sounds. It is a smooth ride. And the gas last pretty long to me. Only downfall I have about the car is the app to use the remote start being down. They don’t know how long it would be down for. And with it being crazy hot in Las Vegas, I would like to be able to cool my car down prior to getting into it. So far I haven’t had any issues but I’ve only had the car for about a week.

5.0 Ultimate is a very nice splurge

2020 Genesis G80 5.0 Ultimate 4dr Sedan (5.0L 8cyl 8A)

I did want the V8 and head up display so the Ultimate is the only option I was considering. Acceleration is amazing handling is very good for a large sedan. This car is a complete joy to drive especially on long road trips. I chose the RWD as winters here in NJ are not that horrible. I do like the look of the 2021 G80 but Genesis no longer offers the 5.0L V8 in the G80 - only turbo V6 or 4 cylinder. The mileage difference between the V8 and V6 turbo is minimal but I didn't want the reliability and maintenance headaches that come with a turbo. Interior comfort and cabin quiet is great. Remote start is only available through the Genesis connected services app and not the remote. It would be nice if the rear seats folded but there is a door that opens between the rear seats for longer cargo. Since Wuhan virus hit I drive <10K miles per year so mileage is not a concern for me. I have only had the car for three months so far with 2700 miles on it and no problems.

I appreciate the temperature and radio controls are available using a knob on the dash or steering wheel controls and I am not forced to use a touch screen although touch screen is available for those that want. Since Wuhan virus hit I drive <10K miles per year so mileage is not a concern for me.
