My 1996 Explorer has 118,000 miles on it and all I ever did to it was oil changes, shocks and brakes nothing else and it is still going strong. There is one thing I don't like is the rack and pinion steering it is to quick, I'll take gear box steering any day.Overall a great truck.

1996 Explorer A Solid SUV

The ride is a little stiff, gas milage not all that good, but this has been the best vehicle I have ever owned in my 58 years of vehicle ownership. We have had one recall but other then that we have only had the Explorer in for regular scheduled service, spark plugs, wires, hoses, belt, and fluids. 135K miles and the front end is starting to squeek but I would not be afraid to take it to Alaska tomorrow.

200000 and Going Strong......

Bought Car from dealership with 16000 on it and put 184000 miles on the highway with it. Hasn't given any problems. Keep the oil changed every 3000 miles and put tires every 40000 or so and go skiing and everywhere else.

Bought at 80k miles, after 2 weeks had check engine light, turned out to be cracked head. Determined to be factory defect! Had head replaced, new one sucked a valve into piston. Dealer paid for new long block. Since then had another check engine light, apparently tech damaged gasket on EGR when swapping engine. Paranoid now, always looking for that orange "check engine".

Personally, I don't care much for the car. I've spent nearly 2000$ in repairs for it! To begin with, I'm a very very cautious driver- I've never caused any wrecks, but I've been rear ended. And the car held up well in the collison- but a few times, when turning slowly even or taking a curve, the car nearly flips over and tilts. Other times, it stalls out and the car speedometer is wrong. When compared to other drivers going 40 the explorer seems slower. It also takes forever to accelerate. And it's a gas guzzler. It also has a very very very bumpy ride. I swear I could feel a pebble in grass! Not the best car in the world- especially for someone on a budget!
