Used 1996 Ford Explorer Consumer Reviews
built ford tough
I bought my Eplorer brand new for business travel purposes. I was getting more than 20k miles a year on it, and at the same time had hardly any problems. Keeping up on maitainance sure makes a difference in performance. It now has a little over 150k mile, and still running very well. Very comfortable, even when driving a few hours on the road. Handles very well on corners. The "Check Engine" light started bleeping when it hit 120k miles. Been going off and on since, but hasn't altered the performance. Mechanics havent figured whats the problem though. Very pleased, and would consider buy another explorer, when the time comes.
Clutch Unbelievably Bad
Stiff clutch must be pushed all the way to the floor, still doesn't quite disengage. Miserable to shift from neutral to 1st at stoplight. Won't enter 1st without great effort. But it's my first SUV and I love sitting higher where I can see the traffic!

Happy
Purchased it used but had nothing but positive experiences with it. Now has 110K reliable miles on it.
reliable
All in all, this has been a very reliable vehicle. It is my dad's car, but I'm the only one who drives it and it's my first car. It has 114,000 miles on it now and I'm taking it from NY to FL this summer, and I'm pretty confident that it will do fine.
Outstanding
My 1996 Explorer has 118,000 miles on it and all I ever did to it was oil changes, shocks and brakes nothing else and it is still going strong. There is one thing I don't like is the rack and pinion steering it is to quick, I'll take gear box steering any day.Overall a great truck.
