Truck has over 220,000 miles on it, only thing major replaced is the fuel pump, the windshield... 3 times, and a few batteries. Runs like a champ, has a weird issue with the mirror adjusting to an unknown position when unlocked with wireless remote and driver power lock went out at 180k.

Bought my expedition new in 2003. Its been the best truck i ever had!! Barr None. I have 272,000 miles on it. No engine or transmission problems what so ever. The alternator went out at 150,000. Ive put several sets of tires on and a few batteries. I change the oil every 4,000 miles, and a tune-up every 125,000 or so. We pull our boat with it like theres nothing behind us. We lay down the seats and camp in the back. we've hauled stuff in the back countless times, Thank god for all the room of our full size Suv. I rented a tahoe for a week while on vacation , with 25,000 on it. What a piece of Crap. like driving a tank.

I bought a 2003 with 70,000 on it in 2014. I was going to get a brand new vehicle but this was to good of a deal to pass up because it was a 1 owner vehicle and was literally in new condition. I hadn't had the vehicle for 2 weeks when a drunk driver rear ended me while I was sitting at a red light with my 3 year old and 10 year old kids in the car. Drunk was doing 45mph and the impact was tremendous. He was driving a full size Chevy truck and it was completely totaled. Expedition had 1000 dollars in damage. Not only was I amazed but the police and firefighters couldn't believe it. This thing is a tank! Mpg is awful but I knew this before I bought it so no surprise there. It rides good and no problems at all. I did change the serpentine belt just as a precaution due to its age. I'm very happy with this vehicle and the 3rd row seats that fold into the floor are a huge plus.

Very nice design but I learned never to purchase the first year after a remodel. Have had several things replaced that I would not expect to have replaced on a new vehicle. Dealer is so-so with their support. Would not replace the brake pads, but they replace the rotors once and resurfaced the rotors the second time. The problem was with the pads and after 25,000 miles, I replace the rotors and pads with Brembo rotors and ceramic pads. What a change. The brake dust is gone. Repaired a short in the system, front headlight seal was bad, replaced the steering wheel due to poor leather, the front seat replaced due to the wear of the leather. All in all, will trade in for a new one.

I purchased a 2003 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition in 2006 with 37,000 miles on it. Aside from routine 5,000 mile oil changes using Pennzoil Synthetic Motor Oil, I have only had two issues. At 125,000 miles, I replaced all eight spark plugs with basic NGK Iridium Spark Plugs, and the engine runs smooth and plenty of power. The alternator was replaced at 165,000 miles due to low output; however, was changed as preventative and never caused mechanical breakdown. I am a DOT engineer and occasionally tow a bobcat on a large dual axel trailer and it tows better then my co-workers 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi pickup truck. Would recommend this to those who want a solid, dependable, SUV!

Ok. There has been some issues. Over the past 14 years of ownership, things will go wrong. A/C went out in 2014, spark plug shot out of cylinder in 2013, and I replaced a coil pack/ Alternator in December of 2016. Little rust under the car, not noticeable. The car is great. People complain about "it is not fast". Honey, please don't buy a 3-row full-size SUV and expect it to pick up like an AMG G-Wagon. These cars are now dirt cheap which is awesome. This car at 6000rpm's when you give it some gas will sound fantastic. MPG is poor, but once again honey, this is not a Prius. The car is heavy, great in the snow considering no TCS. The car looks good as well. As I look for a new car, it will be a Ford or Lincoln no doubt.

the 2003 Ford Expedition is decent car for 40,000 when new but compared to todays standards, falls flat on its face in some places Pros: solid build quility for age, decently reliable, reliable transmission, great amount of visibility, and a slight head turner Cons: expensive repairs, awful electrical system, spark plug problems, frequent brake dust on rims, abysmal breaks(though they last awhile), 6 CD changer is worth smashing since its easily broken, gas milage is only better than a chevy suburban, ford excursion, and the hummer, wind noise can be abit loud at times, and rough idling will occur when in higher milage. if you are planning to buy a 2003 ford expedition, i would but don't expect a trouble free SUV, while its better than all its rivals in most departments, it has its issues. and from seeing all the lies in the reviews of people saying they had no issues period, no matter how much you follow the preventive maintenance, you WILL have 2 major issues #1 will be the Extremely expensive repair for the spark plugs shooting out of the cylinder head which costs over 1000$ for all the spark plugs for a non worst case scenario, if it is it will cost nearly 2000$ to also replace the cylinder head and all other parts. #2 is the more frequent part, the "brain" of the vehicle, the best way to tell if it is going out is when your car starts rough idling hard, and then dies, and will become more frequent if then issue isn't resolved.

We bought our Ford Expedition used. 170,00miles on it. (Eddie Bauer 4X4) We are now getting near 218,000 miles and the SUV runs like new. It preforms with a quite quality that we have not found in other vehicles. My wife and I both love the room & performance. We planned on trading after we decided whether it was the style for us. Now after owning and driving it for 8 years, we can still say we love it. If/when it wears out we will look to replace it with another Ford Expedition. That won't happen for quite some time, as this vehicle has exceeded our expectations in all ways. We did do some maintenance to keep up with age and wear. New catalytic converters, fuel pump, and a new radiator. The 5.4 liter motor uses no oil between changes and the gas mileage is 15 city and 16-20.7 highway. Gas mileage varies on traffic. Our best gas mileage is when the cruise is set @ 64 mph on the interstate. (18.7 mpg) I would recommend one of these to any one looking for a reliable vehicle. No regrets in finding and purchasing this SUV! In 2019 we had to replace the alternator... We had that done before our cross country trip... Which I may add went perfectly... Our FORD never skipped a beat!

I bought my 2003 Expedition new and it's been an amazing vehicle for 278,000 miles. Original engine and transmission - never an issue and still running strong. Outside of the usual maintenance - oil, tune-up, brakes, timing belt, flush... I replaced a cracked manifold.

I saw the new Expedition at the auto show and placed my order the next day. I was taken by the fold-flat third row seats and the sliding center seat in the second row. I love the interior styling (reminds me of an Audi). With all the chassis technology, I'm expected a great driving experience.

This is the 2nd Expedition I buy. This first one I bought...Transmission went out in 1 day! (Dealer Replaced) This new one has spent more hours in the dealership than in my garage. I have had the starter go out, the seat heaters don't work, the 4x4 turns on by itself (module replaced 2 times), Needs new brakes at 25,000 Miles, RPM's go up and down when coming to a stop, and guess what...it is in the shop right now for transmission problems. I am looking at a Lexus right now. I would not suggest this vehicle even for my worst enemy. Buyers beware. For the same price, you can buy a more reliable import luxury SUV!

Purchased in 2006 with 38K on the clock, the truck now has 145K with no major repairs to engine, transmission,or 4WD system. Considering that I keep more than 1000 pounds of library book samples and other cargo in the truck on a 24/7 basis, I've been surprised as to how serviceable it has been. The fold flat third row beats the heck out of the removable seat on my van. The ride and handling lend credence to most of the professional reviews and road tests. In one emergency maneuver, it definitely saved a few lives! I did have trouble with the front rotors warping, but cross drilled rotors on the front solved that problem for good. I have no plans to sell this truck until it hits 300K.

I purchased the new 2003 Eddie Bauer Expedition and am very impressed with it. It handles great, has a lot of room, all the “toys” work well, it is fun to drive, comfortable, quiet ride and looks great. So far I would consider this vehicle the best I have ever purchased (and I have had more than my share of them).

Our Expedition has done my family great over the last six years. It has survived three young children and a lot of driving vacations. It was a great family hauler with the fold flat third row, DVD system, and the heated and cooled front seats. Followed all recommended services done by dealer. Had problems with premature front tire wear until I took it to an independent tire shop to do alignment and balance every 5000. Interior rattles became a problem on rough roads after a few years of use. Gas mileage is bad around town, but better than expected on highway, as long as you go 65.

Bought it brand new in 03. After about a year or two the autolock on the doors quit working, rear wiper was sticking, and plastic molding on doors was badly sunfaded. Had to replace brakes twice with less than 100,000 miles. Every once in a while when you start it a clould of smoke puffs out of the exhaust. When you start the car with the AC set to On you hear a loud "klunk". Just replaced front wheel bearing and still need to replace back one mechanic said. For not even having 100,000 miles on it we've done quite a bit to it. Looks sharp. Hoping to squeeze another 100,000 out of it. Don't know about getting another one. Engine is loosing it's "get up".

Driving and owning this 6th E.B. model in a 4-wheeler is no disappointment. My husband has the 5.4 in his Lightning and happy to say I can still see his tail lights when we leave a stop light. Don't do it often but nice to feel the supreme power and handling in a really big truck. The interior appointments include nav, DVD, htd seats and awesome sound. Greenhouse is supreme except for blind spot at A & B pillars. Easy to miss objects while backing up so like rear sensing device. Overall, Ford has done a 100 on this vehicle when it comes to design and features. General tires awful. Replaced with Goodyear Forteras for outstanding performance, handling and traction. Will get another.

Vehicle drives much better that 2001. Really like the folding automatic rear seats. Problem is that bugs are not out of the first year. Brake dust everywhere. Fix by Ford cost me $900. Mirrors broke and needed to be replaced. Whine in rear end and when one presses on the gas the air conditioning fan motor slows. Standard tires not good. Didn't look at Edmunds technical bulletins until a few miles out of warranty and dealer said tough luck. Gas mileage 13.6 MPG. In the main a nice riding truck and if you want one don't get a 2003. You will see a lot of 2003's on sale.

I can only find one negative thing about this vehicle and we all know what it is. With a 5.4L and 300+ hp engine you can't expect to anything better than 18-19 mpg on the hwy or 13-14 mpg. Things I do not think about when pulling a 8000 lbs trailer or loading up the back with over 1/2 ton of "stuff". All these and a very comfortable ride makes this a a great people mover, stuff hauler, trailer tower, etc. Did get better mileage (2-3 mpg) after changing to a high flow air filter.

Outside body cladding at bottom of doors rattle which is very noisy at 70 mph. I fixed with duct tape because dealer doesn't know how to repair. Already had 4WD go out after only 5000 miles. Good looking truck, lots of towing capacity, but Ford needs to work on quality. My next truck will be a Chevy.

So after all the kinks and fights was said and done and many years later i still have the love of my life my 2003 expedition with 52000 miles! and i am know a certified mechanic!

We just purchased this after someone rear ended our '99 Jeep Cherokee Classic on the highway at 55 mph. We felt bigger = better safetywise (at least it FEELS that way). It was between the 2003 Explorer XLT and this and for the price the Expedition won hands down. I find the Expedition to be big, but not cumbersome. The towing capacity cinched the deal for us. The looks of the FX4 package swayed my husband. The fuel economy has me a little scared but after being in an unfortunate accident, money is not the biggest concern. Anyway, my Cherokee mpg was never THAT great to begin with...

The only 2 Problems I have had with it is the rear a/c makes a Clunking noise and the Paint on the back hatch started peeling off with is common my friend has a 2008 Expedition EL and hers is starting to bubble now to. I owned a 02 Mercury Mountaineer before this and the expedition beets it hands down. Feels much safer, and with being 16 years old my mom feels better about it to. Ride is very Smooth, parking is easy, driving is fun, I have been loooking to buy a new suv with less miles but have not found anything I like better, I will keep the expedition to good to give up!!!!

Excellent vehicle. Only problem we have had was the rear air conditioning motor, which was covered by the warranty. We love this thing and it seems to love us and what we put it through. From dirt roads to snow and pulling our boat, it does it all, without difficulty. The only thing replacing our Ford Expedition will be another (EL Version), once we're free of payments for a few years.

I had been shopping for a Cadillac Escalade but the power folding third row seat ads on TV caused me to stop at the Ford dealership. I test drove a Laser Red fully-equipped Eddie Bauer and ended up buying it. It's got more equipment than the Cadillac, for a lot less $$$. I love the ride, and the steering and braking are in a different league from the GM products.

I thought this was the perfect car for our family with two kids. The car as a DVD player and captain's chairs. After a few hundred miles an obnoxious intermittent rattle appeared in all windows. Ford did a service bulletin and replaced the molding on all windows. The rattle persists in the driver's window. Dealership will not repair and Ford Corporate says no. BUYER BEWARE!!! The interior workmanship is the worst in the industry. DO NOT buy this car. A $42,000 car should not have this problem!

This truck has been a nightmare since the beginning. The problems have been from brakes squealing, the driverside power seat motor going out to the rear end being worked on four times. We even got the Ford rep involved and she claims that the truck is fixed even though the clutches in the rearend are still messing up. We now have 17,000 miles on the truck and we are going to have to eat several thousand dollars in order to trade it. We have resulted to putting poster boards on the truck with lemon signs on it and driving it around Oklahoma City

I am the second owner of a 2003 year Expedition. This truck is all stock except it has 20 inch rims in the summer. It tows my 30 foot boat with a weight of about 11,000lbs including trailer. Drove 13 hours with it and no problems at all. This truck really is impressive, nothing has failed on it yet at 100,000 miles. Awesome build quality. Cosmetically it's great, engine runs like new. Vehicle is very safe and the stability control is an amazing feature. Could not be happier. All the friends love it too. Would recommend to anybody.

You have to be a truly brand loyal to overlook some of the flaws inherent in this vehicle. The engine is underpowered and continually goes in and out of overdrive. At highway speeds, there is a noise across the roof like a thin piece of sheelmetal with something heavy rolling across it. The child locks to come on by itself - poor positioning. The dealer offered to replace it for $220. The check engine light also came on for the first time for routine maintenance - $400. The dealer also told me to expect the average routine maintenance to cost around $200.

This is the first ford I have owned and will be the last. We purchased this car used 2 months ago and this is the 4th time it has been in the shop! First brakes and rattling, supposedly the rotors and brake pads were replaced but still extermly shakey. Twice the suv comepletly died on me while driving.I lost everything and had no power at all. Nearly was hit and had my children in the car! Now it is in the shop because cheap continental tires blew while driving 70 mph on the interstate and did extensive damage to the body of the car. Awesome truck. Ive taken it all over Texas and Mexico, bought it new and now has about 100,000 miles. its been chewed up and abused by South Texas terrain but still stays faithful. seals still good after years off 105 degree weather. handles great in sticky situations (evacuating in high flood waters, hurricane winds, ect.) I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking in to it.

Great Towing & Family Transport

We purchased our first 4x4 as a pre-owned certified vehicle and were originally sold on the Ford as compared to the Suburban based on the interior layout and fold-flat seating. The vehicle was needed to tow some heavy loads off-road and it has performed superbly in this role. The only complaint is a somewhat noisy (whiny)transmission low gear transfer case and the unpainted plastic door protection outer trim that is prone to oxidize. We have had no major mechanical problems and only a window drive motor to repair.

Old 1999 still fun

I've got a 1999 Expedition, I still love to drive it. The all wheel drive makes this beast corner very well. Highway mileage is very good for the triton v8. If you live in a true city area, you might want to shy away from this vehicle because traffic jams eat up the gas quickly. Stop and go traffic is rough on a 4000+ lb vehicle. Any other drivers, suburbs or otherwise will be glad they no longer have to fear for their lives in the winter, it handles like a dream. Just slow down, you can go much faster than you can stop. To those critics who drive a euro sports sedan - don't kid yourself, your car is no friend of the environment either.

Has been an overall good vehicle except for the numberous mechanical problems. The only problem in the warranty period was the drive shaft (needs replacing again, but won't. it rumbles when turning from a start). In the past year and a half I have replaced the cluster, intake manifold, catalytic converter (Ford puts 4 instead of 1). Still not working right. This is causing oxygen sensors to go bad several times. Both rear A\C motors replaced for the thumping sound. Gas mileage is awful, but could be a good truck. Did I mention a ton of front brake dust?

Rattles

This is the most disapointing vehicle we have ever owned. It's not that it is a bad vehicle, but for the money we paid we had certain expectations, and it just does not live up to them. The rattles started at 250 miles and have got worse since then, rattles in the doors, roof, dash and seats. Trim pieces that don't fit. After six visits to the dealer some are resolved and some never will be. The good news is that there is a partial fix for the doors, there is a TSB from Ford, which consists of replacing the door locks and door seals, unfortunately it took 4 trips to the dealer before they found the TSB.

We love the vehicle. We have a family of 6 plus pets and it's got plenty of room for all. Rear air started making a noise at 68K miles, but otherwise it's been a very reliable vehicle. We'll miss this vehicle when it's time to trade.

We love the features that the Eddie Bauer has: heated/cooled seats, etc. but so many problems: the back-up sensors failed, the paint has peeled in many places, the release cable for back lid failed, and many more. The mileage is terrible.

Recently purchased new '03 Expedition XLT..am hugely impressed so far! Very well built truck, thoughtfully designed. Had a '98 Expedition(good truck as well) then traded it for a new Nissan Path- finder..always regreted that. Well, when it came time to trade in the Nissan i went straight to see newly revamped & highly acclaimed Expedition. I don't regret buying another one! Superb truck!

We bought our Expedition brand new and it has been great to us. Love everything about it. We had an Explorer before that we also liked but we needed a bigger car with the dogs and the boat. It is great for towing and long trips- so comfortable. I hope to drive it as long as it lasts- but I would not hesitate about getting another Expedition down the road.

Bought this with 30,000 and now have 52,000 with no problems. This is the second Eddie Bauer and both have been reliable/safe vehicles. 13 mgp in town/21 on road. Friend has a 1999 w/200000 with same results. I'll buy another.

After having my Expedition for 1 year I was driving down the road and it went completely dead. I almost got hit from behind. I went to start it up while in my garage and it wouldn't start. I have had this vehicle towed 2 times. I am scared of it. After driving down the freeway and having it just go completely dead with no power I am going to trade it in on a foreign suv. I cannot see out of the right back side; you are almost completely blind while you are driving it. It is really fun to drive and I hate to trade it in but I do not think it is dependable. The gas mileage is terrible; it cost me $54.00 to put premium in it. I have to fill up every week and half. Don’t work. Stay at home.

Well I have to say I am very pleased with this SUV. I have owned it for year and a half now. I bought it with 52k now 69k. I had one problem with the rear wheel bearings which was covered in the warranty. It drives great, tons of power, very roomy. I go fishing a lot and I can go anywhere off road in any conditions. I will say that the p series tires stink with this SUV in 4x4. The all terrain tires are the way to go. As for the gas mileage I think it does great. I went to visit my brother 400 mles from me and I filled up when we left and again about 100 miles from his house. I have allways been a GM guy and I am used to seeing 60- 80 dollars at the pump to fill up. I will buy a Ford again

This truck is built for tough it tows a 9,000+ pound boat and trailer w/o any problems. Only have had one problem and that was a bad senor but besides that the truck has been nothing but great. Bought the truck with 44,000 miles and now it has 65,000 miles. The exterior has held up great and so has the interior with some wear on the front bottom of the leather seats but its not bad. Would defenitely but another expedition.
