I read most of the reviews here and it almost made me back out of my decision to by a 2000 Malibu LS. But the car was like new, even with 200K miles, and it was very inexpensive compared to the other junk I'd looked at for the same price or more. The prior owner had quite of few of his repair papers and like many of these cars it had the intake manifold redone, a new fuel pump, new water pump, plugs, wires, and one injector, all at around 100K. Also had brakes done several times but no more often them most other cars.

Would have given 3 1/2 stars rather than 4. My wife had been sinking all of her money into another car she had gotten before we got married and when the transmission went we finally junked it and looked for a new to us car. The 2000 Chevy Malibu LS was available in a corner used car lot and I went to check it out. Cons first: The styling is bland and the interior is all cheap plastic and fabric and the radio is crap. Pros next: The car started up right away and handled very well for a boring 4 door family sedan. There was a surprising amount of pep in the engine. The trunk holds more than expected and the the cheap interior is pretty roomy. My wife loved it and we bought it the next day. She drove that car for 4 1/2 years and put 50,000 miles on it on highways and potholed city streets. We had to fix the driver's power window, pull the remote lock when the Service Soon light came on, replace the serpentine belt, replace a melted tab that kept brake lights on, and changed the battery once. Other than that the car was only in the shop for inspection or oil changes. It handled snow just fine and we trusted it to carry our most precious cargo, our children. We finally needed a bigger car when the children grew, but it was still running when we sold it. Our old Chevy Malibu didn't owe us anything. It's an underrated car.

I purchased my 2000 Malibu in 2003 with 60k miles. The owner was a senior citizen who had made lots of road trips and meticulously kept up with maintenance and had all receipts to prove it. I've now had my Malibu for 9 years and love it. I've had to do most of the expected routine maintenance - brakes, rotors, tires, filters. There's been a few pieces of non routine maintenance but overall this has been a great vehicle for me. I'm now at 162k and expect to take it to 200k+. When I'm done, I hope I can find a similar car - malibu from same era with meticulous records and low miles and likely non aggressive driving previous owner.

Had one for 10 years, bought it almost new with 40,000kms. I see other people had nothing but problems, not me drove it till 290,000kms only problems I had were it needed an alternator around 150xxxkms and brakes twice. Doors were starting to rust after 9 yrs and 200xxxkms. Handled fine good power and very comfortable. Was always very reliable for me.

I bought this car new in 2000. It has been a very good car. No major mechanical problems, only normal wear and tare. Everything still works. Uses no oil. It still drives and rides well. The car is kind of basic compared to some others. Nothing fancy, but less to go wrong. The performance is quite acceptable. It's not a muscle car, but it has enough power. I even pull a small trailer. The pushrod V6 turns fewer RPM at highway speeds than more modern overhead cam engines. But because of the low RPM, you seldom hear any engine noise unless you are really standing on the gas. Fuel economy is decent. What struck me most about this car is that the car feels like a larger car than it really is

Front panel electrical system has been a chronic problem. Blower has had to be repaired 3 times. Intake/Recirc is now broken. Bulbs blow out, a fortune to fix. Brake repair and battery replacement. NOW, the car's transmission will not shift in the cold weather. Needs 5 minutes to warm up to even think of shifting. Repair shop says all these problems are KNOWN issues with this car. Cheve Customer Service was HORRIBLE. Quote: "Once you buy the car, it is your problem". Dealer sold me a warranty, now the warranty company is bankrupt and the dealer said it is my problem.

This was my 1st car. I got it as a college graduation gift. I saw it on the lot and test drove it and fell in love with it (think it was the sunroof and the cheesy woodgrain). A year later, I wish I would have left it there! It's been problem after problem! At first, it was the brakes. Then it was the hazard/signal lights which have their own mind. Now, it's the intake gasket problem that is going to cost a MIN of $1000! And the value of the car has went down tremendously. I am seriously about to trade this car in for an Acura RSX or a Honda Accord or something--- anything but a Chevrolet!

I've had this car for 4 years and haven't had any issues. The only things to have gone wrong were fan speeds 1 & 2 on the AC broke while under warranty, and the coolant light on the dashboard came on when it shouldn't have. Other than that, I have kept up with the regular maintenance and haven't had a problem. I'm very pleased with the car.

I've had this car 7 yrs & I've had nothing but problems. It only has 67,000 miles as I don't do much driving except work & errands. I also do the reg. maintenance. I have an extended warranty that has been my lifeline in terms of shelling out money. Every time I take it to the dealership for repair, the same problems start back up a couple of weeks later. I have the manifold gasket repaired, my transmission replaced, the drivers side control panel replaced, the a/c control panel replaced(3x), fuel pump, a couple of the fuel injectors, the water pump & some others I am sure I am leaving out. Will never buy a Chevy or GM ever again based on the nightmare I have had w/ this car. Buyer Beware!

These cars are junk. Horrible brake system. Intake gaskets prone to failure. Piston slap noise when started cold. A/C problems. Ignition switch and other electrical problems. I could go on. A company that sells a car this poorly designed should be shunned by the buying public forever.

My family bought this car in 2003 and it had 30k miles on it. We barely took care of it. I got it at 70K miles a few years later and drove it into the ground and it was always very reliable! Great acceleration for a standard V6 Chevy! Seats were uncomfortable on long trips but for the price and treatment we gave it, it was an extremely reliable car. It was sold to a friend of mine, it now has 115k miles on it and still has needed nothing in repairs! I cannot believe it!!!

I bought this car brand new in 2000, and it has been a good car. As with all cars there's maintenance and repairs that need to be done, especially after driving it over 100K miles. It is still running good after 111K and I am confident it will go to 200K. The biggest issue with this car was the anti-theft system. At about 75K it became so sensitive that when I turned the key to start it, the system would turn on, and I would have to wait 5 minutes before it would start. I had the ignition switch replaced and never had the issue again. Also, the cruise control does not stay locked in, but don't use anyway so it's not a problem for me.

I was surprised to read some of the negative remarks about brakes with the 2000 Malibu. I bought one new in Oct. '99 and am just having my first brake work done today (rotors and pads) at approx. 44,000 miles. The only complaint I have with the car, which I saw someone else mention, is that the heat/AC directional dial doesn't work as advertised. I'm happy when I can at least get partial air headed in the desired direction.

WATER PUMP REPLACED, BLOWER FAN REPLACED, AND TURN SIGNAL SWITCH REPLACED. SPENT OVER $1500 OUT OF POCKET ON ALL OF THESE "NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR" MALFUNCTIONS. GM DOES NOT HELP IN THE LEAST. Currently, my 2000 malibu has 260xxx km and personally have been driving it for 6 years. I strongly believe I will be the last driver for this beater. I do regular maintenance on it to keep it running but this car would die with an inexperienced driver. Over the 6 years I have had to: -1x Intake manifold gasket (holy expensive) -1x Replace both struts and suspensions (snapped while I was driving on one side and punctured my wheel) -1x Replace water pump -1x Replace coolant hoses and will most likely need to replace coolant system soon if im still driving it -1x Replace brake calipers -3x Replace brake pads PROS: -Good acceleration (since V6 engine) -Fuel economy average -Notice very little problems prior to 220xxx mark (first 2 years) -Does the job in city driving Overall problems are the coolant system. This thing leaks and leaks and leaks. The sound system is less than stellar. I no longer feel comfortable taking it out on road trips/cross city driving since engine might overheat from coolant system issues.

I bought this vehicle used with 49K miles. Within the first year it was in the shop for 3 different fuel system problems. After that point, it became a reliable vehicle, with only minor issues. It is relatively comfortable, drives nicely and gets decent mileage. Compared to other vehicles, repairs and service work are inexpensive. It is a plain, dowdy car, but it serves its purpose.

In the beginning I loved my car, but recently it has turned into a "cartoon" car. It seems like things are always popping off of it. Can't keep a wheel cover on one wheel. The sun visor came off in my hand one day recently. Can't roll down one of the windows. One of the A/C buttons won't stay on. The speakers are crap. Sometimes my non existent anti theft system kicks in and I cannot start my car. The first time that happened it cost me $165 for the tow and to get it "fixed". In reality, they just reset the computer. It happened again a week later and when I called the shop they told me how to get it started. Just turn the key on ACC and let it sit for about 5 minutes.

When I bought my 2000 Chevy Malibu in 2003 it had a little over 24000 miles on it.It seemed a good deal for just over 10000. As of 2009 I have probably had over $7000 in repairs. Right now I think the power steering system has passed away. I have had all sort of leaks and wire replacements. I was told by my mechanic that due to the Dexcool coolant that the manual says you are supposed to use it messes up various wires and causes it to overheat. If it wasn't for parental help I would probably be broke and in the gutter. A little after I bought it when I went to use the AC or heater the fan levels periodically stopped working. Driver's side sun visor somehow broke off in my hands. Be wary

I bought my 2000 Malibu used with 23K miles because I needed some basic transportation on a budget. What I got was a bargain…so many features for so little money. I've had no problems at all with it (none, zero, nill), and I'm rough on cars. The A/C works great, despite the brutal Texas summers. It accelerates quickly for a basic four- door and handles quite well too. The ABS brakes work well and are very helpful. It's comfortable and roomy, and the looks are contemporary and stylish without going overboard. Definitely a great car for what I paid, I'd highly recommend it.

I bought my car after renting one from Hertz because I loved the way it handled. I'm 6' tall and can't get into just any vehicle comfortable. With the seat pushed all the way back I have plenty of room and my head doesn't scrape the ceiling. I have over 170000 miles on my Malibu now and it's still going strong. Have an ongoing problem with the A/C compressor cutting off and we've replaced the water pump. The oil is changed regularly and I am careful where I buy gas (also had a problem with bad gasoline). Overall, I'd recommend this car to anyone who's interested in good gas mileage and a fun ride.

Hello. I've owned GOLDIE ( my gold and tan interior maliboo-boo) for over 14 years, and to the cars credit haven't been impressed with many new cars because of the inivations on this malibu in 2000. Try these standard features on my car with the cars of 2016 and see why it was way ahead of is time.... Engine small v-6 3.1 liter and still gets 25-26 mpg combined...that's right.. full size chevy heavy steel frame car that gets 26 mpg combined and its quick...My wife had a 3.6 liter pontiac GRAN AM with 210 hp and I beat her every time...go figure. I have carbon fiber on my dash..free no add on cost. One of the most powerful heater/AC systems I've every felt ( even over my FORD F250 work truck ) and very comfy seats even for my bad hip ( I'm 60 years old and crashed by cycle a few years back) Add full AUTO HEADLIGHTS, ENGINE HILL HOLDER EVEN IN SAN FRANSICO(impressive) and a simple engineand even self-adjusting brakes and a trunk you can almost fit a full size bike into( with the front wheel off) and you have a car that lead the way in many ways and even to this day and the paint even looks fresh as the day she came off the factory showroom too. The reason I'm writing this is because of my medical issues( Diabetic, eye sight, nerve issues) I can't really drive her any more and I'm donating her to a needy family nearby. If you find a CHEVY MALIBU just be aware that engine seals can be a issue with them and need to be replaced every few years...Hell it still has the factory stereo speakers in it and have gone thur 3 hi powered dash radios...She will be missed as the innovator of the GM lineup for the NEW CENTURY ...many imatators have come but no-one did it better...Good bye my fathful stead ...my you live on...but never forgotten . with your gentle seats and your powerful horses...A DEW...Jay Cobbs

Ok this car is junk, why did they make this? Someone gave me this car. For free, all I had to do was fix it up. Leaking coolant, malfunctioning ignition switch, new starter, new head gasket, struts go every couple months, intake gasket went, blower only works on 3 and up, signals don't work, omg the list goes on and on and on, not to mention I've only had this for a little over a year. Don't buy it, or take it for free. Worst car ever built, I will get my vengeance Chevy.

I owned a Ford Mustang... I was going to drive it until I got more money but it crapped out on me. So I got a deal and half through the company I work for, dealers invoice with a 1500 dollar rebate for the Malibu. I used to own Avengers and Camaros and Mustangs, ALL can handle "hard" driving... the Malibu really can't. If you drive hard, like take corners to quick and jump off the line... then by pass this value... I have replaced two tires and all four rotars and brake pads... I am currently at 18,800 miles. IF you are a conservative driver, then this is DEFINATELY the car for you... Over all NOT a bad car at all, just dont drive it hard.

Bought this as a demo with 13,000 miles. There has not been a day when this car has not started. Not garage kept and tolerates midwestern winters great. Brakes have been done 3 or 4 times, blower resister just replaced last week, was only blowing on 5. $20 part. Oil changed every 5000-10,000 miles...97% highway driven. Avg 25- 29mpg. Power window switch replaced this past summer (about $100). Husband complained when I purchased 60000 mile tires when car had 160000 mies on it. Bought another set at 222000 miles. Only rust is around gas cap. Serpentine belt has been replaced once, unfortunately, not a do it yourself job. Just hoping I can find another car this dependable.

This car amkes the noises and creaks that you would expect from a 10 year old vehicle. The brakes go quite often. Funny noises come from behind the dashboard and the heater and air conditioner lasted a total of 5 months on anything lower than three. It does not handle well on turns and the power steering goes quite easily. I would not suggest that you buy this car. The looks and name cover up the cheapness of this car.

I bought the Malibu because it was larger than the 1995 Cavalier and a quieter ride, but I have many more problems with the Malibu than I ever had with the Cavalier. I am at 51,000 miles and about to replace the rotors, which have warped for the second time. The air conditioner keeps switching off for no reason as does the air re-circulation. In a heavy rain, my brake lights shorted out. I'm afraid I will be going a new direction for the next new vehicle.

Bought my Malibu after 7yrs with a Cavalier. Thought that I would have the same wonderful, reliable car as with the Cavalier. Unfortunately, I have many mechanical problems with this car. Brakes!! were replaced, gear problem-- transmission work, A/C fan unit replaced, difficulty changing the A/C (or heat) from floor to defrost and everything in between. Beware to anyone buying a used one..it may have been someone else's problem.

Coming up on 40k miles and have had to had the rotors and brake pads replaced 5 times! Dealer gave me the same bs re: design flaw the first time...3 brake jobs later they still pulsate. I've submitted my complaint to the lemon law lawyers to review. I want my money back. A/C seems about ready to die (flickering on and off occassionally) and my power steering fluid is now all over my driveway. Luckily my dealership is not charging me to fix the pulsating brakes....rotors have 14k mile warranty above and beyond the new car warranty. Brakes also seem to slip in wet weather. I don't feel too safe driving in rain with this car.

Replaced brakes 3 times in the first 15000 miles, had rotors turned twice once at GMs expsense. The next time the dealer refused to do anything so I went to another. They turned the rotors for me..no charge. Transmission went out at 41000, major overhaul no replacement. Went out again at 44000 no replacement. Dealer replaced my rotors, brakes and did a bunch of other technical bulletin work without any problems. Car runs well but I'm always suspect of the transmission after its two previous failures.

We bought our 2000 Malibu couple of years ago, thinking is a good balance between price, performance and quality! We were sooo wrong! Although the price was cheap, but not cheap enough to justify the poor performance and the overall quality. The engine is a junk (we had to replace the intake gasket), the A/C system has to be recharged monthly (the compressor and few other things has to be replaced)-still is not working properly! Overall costly repairs!!!

I have a big problem with the pistion making a knocking sound so I took it in and they said it was normal but it sure dosn't sound like it! And just like most malibu owners my brakes keep warping and i will need new roters next time it happens. Iv'e noticed that alot of malibus seem to get front driver side flats all the time. O'well.

33400 miles later Dependable car so far

I bought my Malibu in May of 2000. It currently has 33,400 miles on it. The first thing that went wong was the selector knob for the blower. The blower was blowing out of of all areas. When we took this apart the black rubber gasket was not in place, rejusted it and now it is fine. My tires are cracked inside the tread. One of my tires is bubbled up on the outside & wobbling. No brake problems yet. There is knocking coming from under the hood until the car warms up.

Maliboooo! Bad Car!

This car had been horrible! Bought it used from a dealer and bought the extended warranty, that was lucky as the knocking and the leaking head gasket wrecked the engine. The insurance paid for its replacement. Then the second engine started doing the same thing! It made a loud knocking sound that "GM does not consider it a problem." Then it overheated and the mechanic did not think it is worth replacing this engine. So the car is junk. We have had the gas door rusting issue and the ignition switch not working issue, the and the turn signals not working issue too. The interior is cheap and we had to replace two speakers that failed. The fan motor does not work in the low speed settings

Done several long trips and the car has performed good. Braking in the city and under rain is a pain, I feel the car is going to loose a brake pad or is not going to stop at all! Even I took it to the dealer for revision, it makes annoying sounds and bumps (ABS seems to be out of sync). On parking driveways where the road has different levels for water drain I can hear noises everywhere in the car, it seems is going to crack.

Getting a Honda

I bought my 2000 Malibu in 10/00. I decided to go with the Malibu over an Accord to save money. I had to replace the rotors at 34,600. Then again at 38000, 44000, and 48000. My lower intake manifold cracked at 46000, and that was merely $1600 to get fixed. I too get colder air from my recirculate than from my A/C. My biggest complaint is the resale value. I got the Malibu for $3000 less than the Accord,I still owe over $9K and it's trade in is just over $6K. If I had bought the Accord I would owe just over $11K and it would be worth $14K. So instead of saving $3K I lost $6K(not including repair costs). Bottom line? I'm buying a Honda.

I bought it used and I have had it over 5 years. Gas mileage is not bad. The interior is OK. I have put brakes on it nearly every year. The A/C randomly stops working. The blower only works on 3 or higher. I have had coolant leaks. Now, my mechanic tells me there is nothing I can do to keep the engine from overheating. The body underneath the gas cap is rusted though. I have seen this on many Malibu's. The turn signals randomly stop working. Don't even think of buying this car, even as a transportation special.

I am pleased with my ownership experience so far. Never had any problem for 34000 miles. I had to change the brake pads at 31000 miles though, which I consider a bit early. But I still feel I got excellent value in return of my investment.

Malibu Surprise! That's what we humorously refer to our Malibu LS as, if you think it will be there, ha, gotcha and surprise.... Seriously though, I did expect more from a $18,500 car purchase. This is unfortunate, unreliable, and costly to keep going. I have had 6 warranty calls, a brake job, and now the electrical is out. Take my advice, buy a different car.

Amazingly Misinformed Dealer

Okay, we've anyone thinking about buying a used OR new Malibu should first check out a Camry or Altima. The engine has had a tapping noise from day one, 4th set of brakes in 35,000 miles, A/C has a mind of it's own, rattles get progressively worse, front end is mushy, dealer acts as though Malibus have no known service issues. HA! There have been over 200 "service notices" since this particular style of Malibu came to market in 1997. My dealer hates to see me coming at this point. My vehicle is leased, and is going back to the dealer where I purchased it from at lease end. BEWARE of OFF LEASE MALIBUS!

Rotors and pads and then again rotors and pads. FIVE TIMES! Not to mention a new front end, the list goes on and on. Several trips to the dealer What a loss I am taking on this car. Not such a great deal afterall.

When I bought my car it only had 28,000 miles on it. It had been sitting for a couple years so it needed new tires, brake work, and air conditioner fluid. Runs great, never has any problems. Drives extremely smooth. I usually get about 28 mpg. It was my first car. I'm a junior in high school and I'm sure this car will last me well through college.

Nice looking car, comfortable interior but many mechanical problems. Brakes, engine hesitation at freeway speed, cruise control not functioning etc. I really like everything about the car except for the mechanical defects and my dealership does not offer good customer service when something goes wrong. Safety is a high priority for me and when my lease is up in May 2003 I will be happy to get into another car that I can feel safe driving. The brake problem is just a little too much and seems to be irreparable. The 2000 Malibu seems to be hit or miss and I missed on this one.
