Unreliable

Larry Slater, Ogden, UT, 06/11/2019
2017 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 4dr Crew Cab 4WD 5.1 ft. SB (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
I bought the 2017 Colorado Z71 in Mar. 2017. First long trip was pulling my 17' travel trailer from Utah to Alaska, 7000-mile round trip with no problems. Truck pulled the 4000# trailer adequately. Trip #2 was from Utah to the North Carolina coast a year later. All was fine until approximately 10 miles north of Branson MO. and 19000 miles on the truck when I started hearing the … unmistakable rear end whine which got worse as I got closer to town. I looked up the local Chevrolet dealer the next morning, they got me in same day. Service writer said it was just tire noise, but they would check. They found everything in the rear end needed replaced. With no parts on hand and it being Friday of a holiday weekend I was "stuck" there until Wednesday when they got all the parts and got everything back together. Back on the road with no problems. Trip #3 was pulling the trailer from Utah to Black Hills ND. Walked out of the grocery store and happened to glance at the front tires, they were badly worn. Returned to Utah, took it to the dealer where it was purchased. I was told the tires were over inflated...the on-board tire pressure monitor had never indicated any problems nor had the monthly reports from GM alerted of a problem. The truck has only been serviced and had tires rotated by that dealer. If the tires were over inflated it would have been by them but of course that couldn't be the case. So, at 30000 miles I had to spend $800 on tires. Trip #4 pulling trailer 280 miles from northern to south eastern Utah. This time check engine light came on at approximately 33000 miles, stopped at an auto parts store, their box indicated crank shaft sensor malfunction. Next morning went out to take it to the dealer and the engine light was off, took it in anyway, they said they couldn't find any stored codes, nothing they could do. Next day we went touring and about 60 miles or so the light came back on, called the dealer and asked if we should tow it in. No, he said it probably would be ok to drive it back, I made another appointment for the following day. Of course, the light went out again so appointment was canceled. Drove around a couple more days then headed home, light came back on part way home, found another dealer. They checked and determined that the sensor needed replaced but they didn't have one in stock but they indicated it would be ok to drive it home. So have an appointment with yet another dealer to get it checked out. I don't feel this truck is reliable and would get rid of it tomorrow but it isn't worth anything. I will always be waiting for the next failure.

I love my little Colorado!

RebelsWingman, Macon, GA, 05/09/2018
2017 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 4dr Crew Cab 4WD 5.1 ft. SB (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
In the beginning, I researched the Colorado with the diesel option. From late 2015 until March of 2017 I looked for any information about this truck that I could find. I ended up in March of 2017 purchasing a black 2017 Chevy Colorado Z71 crew cab, short bed, four wheel drive with the diesel option. I have had many positive comments from total strangers, it's a real head turning pickup. … The driver information center tracks constant 50 mile loops as for fuel mileage, I have turned in my highest mpg of 33 miles to a gallon. I chose the diesel option because I pull a 19 foot, center console, deep V fishing boat behind it. It handles the boat and all my belongings very nicely. I will have to admit that I have gone with an aftermarket tune and cold air intake for the truck, it has increased horsepower by approximately 60 horses and 100 foot pounds of torque. As for the cons; price is too much, warranty is too short, and at this price there should be rear seat ventilation. But overall, I love my little Colorado!

Unreliable from day ***One***

In Litigation, Bellevue, WA, 01/23/2023
2017 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 4dr Crew Cab 4WD 5.1 ft. SB (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
I am 41 year old Male. I live in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles. The ***first month*** I bought the truck (2017 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Crew Cab) the transmission started to shift alarmingly aggressively. I took it to the dealer where I purchased it (Keyes Chevrolet of Van Nuys) to have it looked at multiple times over the course of the first year. Each time I took … it, the service department informed me the alarming noise it was making was “Normal” operation. After the third try taking it to them, I asked to speak with a service manager who began giving me some ridiculous explanation about how because the transmission in this model has so many gears, the travel between them makes the transmission smash and smack in to gear when it’s changing gears. ( ? ) When he was done with his ridiculous tutorial, I asked if he has told that story to many people, and then asked how many of those people believed the story. I then took the truck to 2 other dealers. Rydell Chevrolet in Burbank and Allen Gwynn Chevrolet in Glendale Calif. Both told me the operating noises I was hearing was “normal” operation. During this same time, the navigation system and head unit failed. I couldn’t t control any of the functions. The first tell-tale sign of there bing a problem was the head unit becoming noticeably hot to touch. I took the Truck back to Keyes. They replaced the unit under warranty. The head unit still freezes and acts up today. Several lights in the dash are now out and cannot be seen at night. In 2022 before the warranty expired, the transmission is began to significantly slip and fail. I attempted to schedule a service and all of the General Motors dealerships within a 20 mile radius of my home actively and outright refused a service request from me stating they did “Not have any Transmission Technicians”. I called around to multiple dealerships- ***ALL*** telling me the same thing. Then I contacted GM DIRECTLY. The representative was helpful at first but ultimately told me to call around to other dealerships to make the service request. She informed me that she can’t force any dealer to service the vehicle. ***I was basically stuck with paying for the problem on my own…. And of course this went on until <the warranty expired.> Now, my vehicle is flashing a Service engine light reading P-0014 ***which apparently*** is a warning of a catastrophic engine problem where the sensor telling the computer where the camshaft is positioned has failed and that I need to stop driving the vehicle immediately and get the issue resolved. It is January, 2023. The vehicle has just over 54,000 miles. I am holding on to the vehicle (and still paying the note on it) just so that my Lemon Law case filed in court pays out and I get my money back for this piece of crap. Thanks GM. I appreciate the help . You’re definitely spitting in what has been a loyal customer for years now….

Transmission / Torque Converter is Terrible

Fuzionair20, Wilton, NH, 08/27/2020
2017 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 4dr Crew Cab 4WD 5.1 ft. SB (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
Vehicle Information Manufacturer: Chevrolet Model: Colorado Trim: Z71 Crew Cab Short Bed Transmission: 8 Speed Model Year: 2017 Dear Chevrolet: On July 6th of 2020, I had to bring my truck to my local Chevrolet dealer for warranty service with regards to my powertrain. I brought the truck in as it was experiencing the following symptoms: Significant shudder in the driveline: Occurs at … low RPMs on flat or slight inclines and is irregardless of vehicle speed. Hard shifts: Very rough shifts occur when both accelerating and slowing down in the low range gears (1-4). Transmission clunk/lurch: When doing highway driving, if the operator takes their foot off the gas pedal, there is a significant clank in the drivetrain and the vehicle lurches and slows down considerably when coasting. Transmission failure to engage: When turning on the vehicle, initially when putting the vehicle in drive or reverse, the transmission will not engage. The vehicle RPM’s will increase when the gas pedal is pressed, no motion will happen of any kind. After 7-10 seconds, the transmission will engage with a big clunk/lurch. As someone who reads and watches and follows many reviews of GM products, and would consider myself a genuine Chevrolet fan, I am concerned with the long term viability and reliability of my vehicle. I purchased this truck with the intent of seeing how many miles and years I can see this truck through. My local dealer did replace the transmission fluid, however the issues are not resolved. With the current drivetrain system issues I have, I am concerned with the vehicles ability to be reliable as miles and years go up. This issue has cast a shadow on my experience with my vehicle and the support from the Chevrolet thus far has been very discouraging. As a fan of the brand, I now question if I will be a future customer due to this experience. Possible Solution: I would like to see Chevrolet stand for what they manufacturer and be a beacon of reliability. As this will decide if I will be a customer again in the future. With that in mind, a good start would be to grant these trucks an extended warranty at no cost. I would like to request that this vehicle powertrain warranty be extended to 10 years unlimited mileage. This will show that Chevrolet stands behind the longevity of their vehicles and will also support their product as Chevrolet is fully aware of the known issues with this vehicle.

Edmunds Summary Review of the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Extended Cab

Pros & Cons

  • Pro:Gasoline V6 and four-cylinder diesel engines tow more than rivals
  • Pro:Maneuverable size, along with well-mannered steering and handling
  • Pro:Comfortable ride over most surfaces
  • Con:Front seats can feel confining for larger people
  • Con:Rivals offer more in-cab storage with rear seats folded
  • Con:Low-hanging front air dam limits off-road potential

Which Colorado does Edmunds recommend?

Other than deciding which engine and cab configuration to go with, picking a Colorado will depend largely on the number of creature comforts you need. With that in mind, the LT strikes a good balance between equipment levels and price while providing a few desirable option packages and a pretty modern vibe. The Z71 comes with the most features but gives you less flexibility to pick and choose. Its off-road capabilities aren't best-in-class, but if you want to hit the dirt in a Colorado, the new ZR2 is your best choice.

What’s new

For 2017, the Chevrolet Colorado receives a revised V6 engine that comes paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is a bit more powerful, though fuel economy ratings do not change significantly. Also noteworthy this year is the new ZR2, which comes with special suspension hardware for vastly improved off-road capability.

Vehicle overview

The smooth-riding and well-equipped 2017 Chevrolet Colorado is a solid offering in the midsize truck segment. It's not the best choice for heading off-road or for ultimate comfort, but it's easy to drive and has plenty of towing capability.

Although full-size trucks are some of the most popular vehicles in America, trucks such as the Colorado make a great case for themselves as mini-me versions of the big haulers. Available with three different engines and an array of cab and bed configurations, the 2017 Colorado is a midsize truck that can get all sorts of jobs done.

A plus for midsize trucks such as the Colorado is their maneuverability. Though they may seem only marginally smaller than full-size trucks (such as Chevy's Silverado), they're much more nimble and versatile in the city. Plus, the Colorado can tow up to 7,700 pounds — that's more than enough for the typical trailer.

Notably, we picked the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado as one of Edmunds' Best Used Cars.

What's it like to live with?

Our editorial experts put more than 50,000 miles on a 2017 Colorado ZR2 to determine its strengths and weaknesses. Equipped with an optional turbodiesel engine and loads of rugged equipment, the Colorado ZR2 is an adventurer's dream. But does that mean it's the right truck for you? 2017 Chevrolet Colorado models

The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado is a midsize pickup offered in two- and four-seat extended-cab and five-seat crew-cab body styles. There are two bed lengths and five four trim levels: Base, Work Truck (WT), LT, Z71 and ZR2. For a no-nonsense truck, the Base and Work Truck models will likely hit the spot. The better-equipped LT offers extras such as Apple CarPlay and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot-spot connectivity, while the top-of-the-range Z71 combines some basic off-road prowess with top equipment. Lastly, the ZR2 has significant suspension and body modifications that give it significantly greater off-road capability.

The entry-level model, known simply as Base, covers the truck basics without much in the way of extra fluff, but it still has a decent amount of equipment. It's offered only as an extended cab, and standard features include a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine (200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque), a six-speed manual transmission, air-conditioning, vinyl upholstery and floor covering, a four-way power driver seat with manual recline, front bucket seats, a tilt-only adjustable steering wheel, power windows, a rearview camera, and a six-speaker sound system with a 4.2-inch display.

There aren't too many changes when you step up to the Work Truck (WT) model, but it does come in both extended-cab and crew-cab body styles and adds fold-up rear jump seats (extended-cab models only), cloth upholstery, carpeting and floor mats.

The major difference between the Base and Work Truck trims is the latter's exclusive list of desirable options. Essentially you can equip the Work Truck with a few tech items, optional engines and exterior trim that makes it feel less basic. From the WT level on up, you can get a six-speed automatic transmission for the base four-cylinder or one of the Colorado's two optional engines: a 3.6-liter V6 (308 hp and 275 lb-ft) paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission or a 2.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine (181 hp and 369 lb-ft) paired to a six-speed automatic.

Notable options that are part of packages for the WT include remote keyless entry, cruise control, and an audio system upgrade package that includes a version of Chevrolet's app-based MyLink system with Bluetooth connectivity, a 7-inch display screen, voice controls, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, OnStar telematics and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot-spot connectivity.

If you don't want to sort through all the WT's options sheets, you can simply spring for the LT, which gets you most of the above items, plus 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio and two additional USB ports.

More options are available for the LT, with the most notable ones being heated front seats, automatic climate control, and forward collision and lane departure warning systems.

For more luxury accoutrements and mild off-road ability, the Z71 is the next step up. It comes standard with most of the LT's optional equipment, plus it adds dark-tinted 17-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires (instead of all-season tires), an off-road-oriented suspension, a locking rear differential, hill descent control, unique cloth and simulated leather upholstery, and other model-specific trim pieces. And as a final touch, the LT and Z71 also offer a seven-speaker premium Bose audio system and a navigation system (an enhancement of the standard 8-inch MyLink interface).

Even with the off-road-oriented suspension, the Z71 is still more oriented toward street use. For more ability off the beaten path, the ZR2 is your truck. The ZR2 has a raised suspension with special dampers, bigger all-terrain tires, fender flares, special bodywork for improved approach and departure angles and an electronically locking rear differential. Chevy offers the V6 or the diesel engine for the ZR2.

Driving

The Colorado drives well in almost all scenarios. Its tow ratings lead the class, steering and handling allow the truck to maneuver well around town, and the highway ride is smooth. We'd happily take the Colorado on a long road trip and drive it on a daily basis.

Comfort

Though it's broadly utilitarian, the Colorado has a comfortable ride while being quiet and easy to drive — especially on long trips. It's not soft, but it's livable for anybody who knows trucks.

Interior

Though there are some plastics that aren't exactly class-leading, the Colorado has a likable, well-organized and utilitarian cabin overall. There's sufficient room for four adults, and the build quality stands up over time.

Utility

The Colorado manages a good balance of abundant small item storage and rear-seat cargo space. Buyers looking to maximize hauling capability should go for the long-bed Colorado.
