Amazing Quality and Powertrain

Definitely not a sporty car. If you want that, get a 3-series. That's not to say you can't have fun it it, it has a lot of power and has a great engine. But it is first and foremost a luxury cruiser geared towards comfort. If that is what you are looking for, this is the best in the business.

The new 530 IX drive is such a nice complete car. It is set up with all the latest technology including remote start and keyless entry. The car drives so smooth and has nice pick up to get you moving. The seats are comfortable and the detail inside the car gives me and my friends a wow factor. The wheels make the car. Lastly, the gas mileage is just right.

A Civilized Beast

2020 BMW 5 Series M550i xDrive 4dr Sedan AWD (4.4L 8cyl Turbo 8A)
27 of 29 people found this review helpful

Just picked the 2020 M550 version with the improved HP and The idrive 7. Custom spec with almost all options included. As an prior owner of multiple other luxury cars and SUVs, this one is the best combination of speed, luxury and technology at around 85k-95k MSRP point. The car has multiple personalities depending on which driving mode you engage in. Driving in adaptive mode has been my main daily routine but put this car in sports or sports + and it changes into a violent beast !! Great luxurious seats, especially if you choose the luxury seating package. I also opted for the dynamic handling package which likely makes a difference as some reviewers noted heavy handling that I have not quite encountered - likely due to this added option. I find the driving quite nimble for a car this size and honestly wanted a car with a more civilized driving experience with a sporty/fast mode on call as needed. Love the bower Wilkinson audio and the iDrive system with the larger and more informative HUD is a decent upgrade. There are many other tech options I opted for, such as parking assist with display key, driving assistance plus but I am finding little practical use of many of these add ons. Some of the safety options are quite useful but lane assist is one that I can personally do without. Options in general are costly but in this class (E53, S6, etc.) either cheaper or a superior offering. Fuel economy is closer to the lower promised end at 16mpg (less than a week driving) but I have been a bit of sports mode driver at times so may be its my driving style rather than the expected norm. There’s multiple independent reviews out there (YouTube) with folks experience fuel economy in the 20s mpg range which is quite decent for the size of the car / engine output.

Fun to drive and good gas mileage but brake pads do not last. Recommend ultimate care to cover the cost. Replaced pads at 11400 (both), 25093 (both), & 38393 (front) miles. 3rd set of tires at 47k miles

I took delivery just before Christmas as a gift to myself. It replaced my 2006 5 Series which I traded in. The cars handling and overall driving dynamics are amazing. The fit and finish, handling. workmanship and product design are superb. I have no regrets in buying this vehicle.

Shortage of computer chips cause several options to be eliminated. These options were available when the car was ordered from BMW and the factory didn’t inform me or the dealership that options were removed. No adjustment to the sticker price either.

Incredibly comfortable upscale daily driver with an abundance of power. The V8 engine with 523 horsepower rockets this large sedan to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds with performance that nips at the heels of the M5. BMW’s infotainment is amongst the best in the industry.

Bad AC System for the 5 Series

I bought a 2022 BMW 540 in December of 2021. Car has been back to the shop four times. Living in Florida it gets very hot down here and when you set your automatic climate control to 74 degrees and the cabin hits 74 degrees the vents down by your feet and the rear vents for the passengers throw out hot hot heat. BMW says that is the way the car is built. Anyone living in a climate where you need constant air conditioning like Florida do not buy this car. I love the car it's a beautiful car it rides beautifully but has very bad air conditioning

Best automobile I've driven

I have a 2021 M550i. Extraordinary car. The comfort factor in this car is the very best I've experienced. The variability of seat adjustments is incredible. I have had 13 herniated discs and never have I found a more variable adjustable seat, nor massage modes. The power (523hp) is insane for a car in this sector. Acceleration is phenomenal and curves are super smooth. I don't have the driving skills for an M5, or a Porsche, due to spine issues, but this car is perfect for me. I ordered every extra except the 'use the key fob to park the car'. Driving this car is a sublime experience - power, acceleration, solid stance cornering, comfort (the seat adjustability is endless), audio (the Bowers and Wilkens audio is the best I have heard in a car), and pure luxurious fun of driving is incredible. It's far better than the Audi S6 or MB AMG E53 that I also test drove. I love idrive version 7, although miss Google Skyview that I had in my 2018 Audi S5 that I traded. I had a '20 Audi S6 ordered, and canceled due to terrible sales communication. So glad the Audi deal fell apart - the M550i is a superior driving experience, and the rotary dial user interface in the Beem is far better than the multiple touchscreens in the Audi. MB user interface in the E series is terrible

Wow is really all I need to say after trading in my 2019 M550i for the more powerful 2020 M550i. Having been a Corvette fan since owning many these last 12 years I decided to get into the 2019 M550i and so glad I did. This car even though a sedan weighing almost a 1,000 pounds more handles as well as my 2014 3LT Z51 convertible and can fit up to 5 passengers.Another plus is the fact that has AWD,523 hp and 553 lbs ft torque. The difference in the hp boost along with the torque bump makes this car the envy of the competition most notably the MB E43 AMG,the MB E55 AMG and the Audi A6 and A7. For someone wanting a fun car to drive with muscle this is the car. It's a comfortable car but pins you back in the seat for a lot less money by about $40,000 than its big brother the M5.Try it because you'll not only like it but rather love it. Jeff, Fishkill, N.Y.

Bought the car brand new last year. Have had to take it into the shop 2x for sun roof issues. I've owned several cars with a sunroof and this is the first time I've had issues. Very concerned of the quality now. Dealership could careless. I don't know if I'd buy another BMW after this.

A Worthy Plug-In Hybrid

Dan, 06/26/2024
2021 BMW 5 Series 530e 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)

Bought this car used with low mileage. Good news is you can get one of these like all BMWs at a good price. Bad news is that the warranty issue could be a problem later. However, these cars are rock solid in my opinion. This is my third BMW plug in. Is it the best? Depends what you like. I like the X3 the best now that I've had this car a little while. The 530e does everything very well. The gas mileage without charging is much better than advertised. I took an 800-mile road trip and averaged 37mpg without charging. That was cruising between 70 and 83 depending on where I was with AC on. It's just as good as the 330e.. . I see almost no difference. The X3 gets worse mileage but it's all wheel drive and boxier. The back seat is good but not great for a mid-size car. I wish BMW would finally give us a decent back seat for such a large car. Everything else works very well. I really like that you can use the touch screen or use the control knob to do everything. There's nothing worse than having this dirty/smudgy looking touch screen. Electric range is spot on at around 20 miles per charge. You can get more if you don't use the A/C and drive slower. It'll be quite a bit less in super cold or hot weather. All in all, these cars are a steal if buying used. The only gripe I have is with the front seats... in my opinion they are too snug and I'm fairly thin. There are multiple variations of the front seats so just be cognizant about that.

No ultimate driving machine w/o Sport/M-Sport pkg

I've been driving 5 series since 2003, and this is my 4th. I absolutely LOVED my first 2003 530, it was powerful, tight, very responsive. I skipped the 2004-2010 models because I didn't like the boring, conservative body styling. When I went shopping again in 2012, I discovered that the base configurations had become "softer" and less spirited. The familiar "ultimate driving machine" feel came back once I tested a 2012 535 xDrive with a Sport Package. In 2016 I test-drove a new 545 (v8) - no SP - and was disappointed again: the steering wheel felt too wobbly, the car felt to soft and didn't handle as well as I was used to. Extra HP didn't matter once the handling was not as sporty. I ended up buying a 535 xDrive M-Sport that felt amazing! It has become clear to me that BMW no longer includes the hyped-up "ultimate driving machine" experience with their base configurations. It's a sad fact. Every time I get into a base config 530 loner, I feel as if I am driving a cheap Ford Focus, or something like that. These days, you do need the SP or M-Sport upgrades to truly experience the famous BMW handling. That will cost you $3+K extra, but it's definitely worth it - unless you are a poser who wants a BMW as a status symbol and does not care much about the actual BMW driving experience. FWIIW, my conclusion: 530 (i4 engine) is underpowered and is not worth consideration if you are buying a BMW to enjoy driving it, not just to be seen in it. A 540 is an outstanding car, but only if you get SP, or better yet, the M-Sport package (you could get the steering and suspension upgrades individually, but it would be cheaper and easier to find as a package.) That gives you the awesomeness of the superior BWM handling, responsiveness, stiffer suspension and precise steering, a nicer steering wheel (vs the cheap thin one that comes with the base config.) A night and day difference. The same goes for 550. If you have the money, get the M550. If not, the 540 M-Sport is all you need to get the chills you are looking for!

Bought my 2022 530i a few months ago. Overall a nice car but for one issue. The back panel of the front passenger seat rattles against the metal seat frame . There is a service bulletin out and the dealership states they have done all they can but the rattle remains when the seat is empty. Very irritating. So if quality build in your "luxury" sedan is important, keep this potential flaw in mind.

The best of both worlds, luxury and power. The M550i is much quicker than if feels. I personally did 0-60 in 3.5s 1ft rollout 3.3s, 1/4 mile 11.5s. It's just what the Doctor ordered. No drama. Gets great gas mileage for the power it makes.

M550 is the right next level 550 drivers

I have owned and been driving 5-Series V8's since 2006 (545i, 550i and now M550). Somewhere in between I had an E60 V10 for about 6 months, but it wasn't what I needed/wanted. I know people like to compare the M550 to the M5 and critize the heck out of it and its shortcomings. I like to push these cars hard, but honestly I like balance in my every day driver. I drove my 550i for 10 years and loved every moment with that car, just as I did with the four years with my 545. This M550 is a force multiplier and not to be doubted. I think it was a smart next step for 550 drivers who relish in comfort and next level performance. The M5 is right for some, but not others. We should stop comparing the two or wondering about how the M550 fits or does not fit in the line-up. Drive it for what it is for a few weeks and push it hard, but dont compare it to the M5. Thats an amazing vehicle in a different class and price point. I have driven the latest M5 and its incredible, just not a fit for what I need and want. The performance of the M550 is truly incredible on its own merits and a standout hands down in its class. Again just IMO.

I am a long-time BMW owner, and have experienced the evolution of BMW’s 5-series model from my 1987 535is sedan, to my 1997 Dinan 540i, and now my newly purchased 2020 540i xDrive. The new models have become computers equipped with four run-flat tires ! The 540 handles well, and has a spirited twin-turbo motor. I also appreciate the technology platform, but I don’t need to be distracted by the dashboard wizardry that will essentially get obsolete and/or need unobtainable service. Particularly annoying is the “lane departure” feature that tries to steer you back into your lane, whenever you are trying to switch lanes ! The “heads up” display is for fighter pilots, not for daily drivers...... likewise there is no spare tire, no tools, just an 800-number. to call to order up a flat bed truck to take you and your flat-tired car away ! who you gonna call when you are passing through the UTAH desert and you catch a nail or deep pothole ?! But, it seems all new cars now suffer from this “driver withdrawal syndrome”. GO BMW ! But all modern automobiles

Absolute blast to drive. Glued to the road and sticks you in the seat on acceleration. Stops great. Comfortable for long trips. Overall great car.

Has anyone found that the shifter fails to respond.while the car is "determined to STAY IN PARK. I occasionally have to turn off the engine, and restart the car to keep it in drive. Very frustrating esp. when cars behind you are being blocked because you can't move...This event has occurred 3 times in the past 3 mos.

Handles and drives well; rides comfortably. No front camera, no speed limit indicator in dash, no side view cameras, no top-down view. My 2020 330i had all of these. "Driver Profiles" don't work well. UPDATE: Lease ended 11/17/24. Most of the missing items were due to parts supply issues in 2021 due to Covid-19. I leased a 2025 model, and it's great!

I like this car a lot. It is solidly constructed and very tight. The engine is powerful and fun. While the car handles well, the steering is a bit numb on feedback from the road. The infotainment system is the best I've seen in a car. I'm a previous Mercedes owner and theirs is awful compared to BMW's. The seats are incredibly comfortable. The ride is taut yet smooth. The interior is quieter than my old E class. The interior of this car is sparse compared to the E class. If you want more glitz, you won't find it here which suits me just fine. I like things simple and strong and this car delivers. The car has the ride that the E class should have but doesn't. It's also still sporty enough to make you smile when you step on the gas.

As a first time BMW owner, I was NOT disappointed at all. Such a smooth ride, fully loaded, and can comfortably seated five people comfortably.

This beautiful M550 responses when you wish is reliable in 3 1/2 years has never given me a problem. The custom paint that I had put on makes his truly and beautiful car to admire. You should know that I’ve had six five series BMWs in the last 30 years and this is the first one I’ve held for longer than two years. One of them picked up in Germany and drove on the autobahn. The rest were just normal every day drive to work cars. This is the same one, but it’s a classic gorgeous BMW, when it starts to give me trouble, I will have difficulty departing with it.

Customer Satisfaction on NO concern to BMW

We took two short test drives in this model. The first must have had the contour seats. The second was in the car we purchased which had the sport line Dakota Leather cognac seats. Seeing there was a $1500 upgrade cost and the 5 minute drive was wonderful I did not give it a second thought. The very next day while taking a 2 hour drive my legs became numb and painful. The HARD wings on these narrow seats dig into the back of my legs. A call to the dealership resulted in "you can adjust the seats and widen them". True for the back but not the actual seat portion. A call to BMW headquarters in NJ resulted in "sorry there is nothing we will do for you since the car is built correctly." SO before buying be aware of these seats and BMW's insensitivity and disinterest in your satisfaction.

With its Combination of power, quite smooth ride and more creature comforts you have to watch your speed or it would take off it only had wings. It drives in the way that has made BMW a legend and has comforts that make it possible to arrive fresh even after driving all day. Truly a great car to drive.
