Smooth, quiet, sporty, and efficient

2023 BMW 3 Series 330e 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)

My fourth 3-series and my favorite so far. Needed a daily driver to replace an aging Chevy Bolt, my weekender being a 2014 Porsche Boxster S. With a 14 mile round-trip commute I do not need huge electric-only range, making a PHEV of some sort the right choice for me. I cross-shopped all the PHEV's under $60k and landed on the 2023 BMW 330e, which I ordered just to my liking, for which I paid MSRP, and of which I took delivery last week. First impressions? This is easily the quietest car I have driven. I can have a whispered conversation with my wife driving 80 mph on the freeway. Engine noise is unobtrusive and switching between gas and electric in hybrid mode is unnoticeable. I spec'd mine with the Adaptive M-suspension which I would highly recommend. Though my last three 3-series were of the F-generation making this a somewhat unfair comparison, all had Msport fixed suspension that seemed to aim more for the sporty but were also jittery and high strung. The Adaptive M-suspension in comfort mode on this car seems to strike an excellent balance between suspension comfort and drivability. The combination of a refined powertrain and smooth driving dynamics yield a level of refinement I was frankly surprised to obtain at this price point. The interior is lovely and expensive-feeling in a tasteful manner, featuring comfortable and supportive seats, high-grade materials on all surfaces, and very well laid-out controls. The large curved center screen is bright and expansive and the instrument cluster tunable to different viewing options. I've been following owners manual instructions on break-in and so have not had a chance to really get on it, but even a gentle prod of the fun pedal leads to plenty of oomph and the low end torque from the electric motor is quite palpable. So far it would appear that efficiency is as advertised. I'm 250 miles in and not even down to a half-tank running exclusively in hybrid mode. Mine is the Msport spec so I cannot speak to the standard braking feel but holy mother are the brakes good on the Msport version. Feel is perfect and stopping power feels way better than any car I have driven other than a pile of Porsches (I have own two and tracked many others). There are a few features which I find less satisfactory. It took me quite awhile to sort through even a few of the configurable options. This version of iDrive is certainly superior to those of my past 3-series and I suppose that feature overload will not be unique to this car. I am also not super in love with certain styling aspects, not least of which is the Darth Vader look of the front fascia and splitter of the Msport spec, which you have to go with if you want the M Adaptive suspension. Likewise the instrument cluster, which has a "<" on the left showing speed and a ">" on the right showing efficiency - this is in comfort mode, with what is shown in sports mode being, I think, a speedo and a tach. These are modest gripes with what has been a major surprise. I paid $42k in 2010 for a BMW 335d, which was far less refined than this 330e for which I paid under $50k. Heck, my Bolt was $42k new. If you are looking for an stylish, smooth, quiet, and refined PHEV that doesn't seem to require any compromises this might be the one. It sure is for me.

Great car but maybe not for all

Update after one year: I am close to exchanging this car for a A4. I don’t care for the firm ride and the run flat tire situation causes me stress. I have had 2 tire incidents where I had to replace the tire after hitting potholes. I couldn’t drive away as the tire was totally deflated. If you can’t drive on the run flats then what is the point? No spare tire so had to wait an hour for bmw to call for towing. Now I drive around with anxiety looking out for ruts in the road which is not a good experience. Note that I had the lower profile 19 inch tires. It’s a shame. The A4 at least had a donut spare wheel. Auto makers should listen to their customers - no one likes the run flats! Old review: I’ve had the 330 xdrive for about 3 weeks now and overall I am happy with it. My previous car was an Audi S4 which is more performance oriented. I wanted something more modern and more fuel efficient without sacrificing too much performance. This car pretty much foots the bill. For anyone that is shopping in this segment you should take a hard look at the Audi A4. These two cars are very close in terms of competence but they have different flavors. The bmw is more stylish, handles better, sounds better and is just cooler. However, the bmw has a firm ride that may bother some people. I got the 19 inch wheels and it comes with run flat tires that are stiff. I didn’t test drive this exact car so my bad. If I had known I would have chosen the 18 inch wheels. This is not such a problem that I regret my decision to buy this car. However if I lived in an area with a lot of bumps and potholes I would choose the Audi. The suspension is great at soaking up everything while still good at high speeds. As for the power it’s one of the best 4 bangers I have driven. At times I miss the 330 HP of my S4 but the trade off in fuel mileage is worth it. I am getting 26mpg now vs 18. If you live in a less congested area where you can really open it up I would suggest getting the M340. However, once you get this car up to speed it is naturally fast. It just cuts through the air. It’s natural habitat is way over the speed limit.

Great handling car

Overall, I am impressed with my first BMW. The drivability of the car is exactly what I expected. It is quick and confidence-inspiring. The hybrid integration is much better than I expected. I seldom notice moving from the battery to the engine, as the transition is smooth. I notice a power difference when on the battery, as it seems to hold the car back. After driving many "T" brand cars, I hoped for immediate torque during acceleration but found it tame, noticeably different than when under ICE power. I appreciate the 20 miles+ range on battery only and am amazed how the BMW powertrain management system when in Hybrid ECO, can offer good performance, regenerate the battery when under ICE and coasting, and extend one take of gas beyond 500 miles. My only complaint is when the stereo is at full power, and then the screen is touched, a noticeable reduction in music happens. I expected a better integration of the software, and that is the only reason I deducted one star.

This is my first BMW, and it doesn't disappoint! It has a great drive, it is quiet, responsive handling and smooth. There are many controls and it comes with everything you could want. I added the phone charging tray station, and I am happy that I did. My only complaint is my trunk space is smaller than my last car - an Acura. Great gas milage with the hybrid. Loving it!

I had this car built full spec. A pure joy to drive. Very quiet in both electric and ICE mode. Purchased 11/6/22. My commute is 13 miles one way and I'm able to charge at both ends. After 30 days I pumped in 7.9 gallons ($32) and used 222 KWH @ .15 per kilowatt ($33.30). I canceled a I4 order and went this direction and not looking back. Between Fed and State rebate= $9500. I4 not eligible. Safe driving and ask Santa for this ride. You won't regret it.

I have the 2023 330E with the M-Sport package, shadow line package and convenience package and also added the Harmon Kardon stereo. While the car does handle well and is pretty quiet inside, it still has its faults. The battery doesn't really last long at all, although I knew that when I bought the car, I just wished it had a gas tank larger than 10.3 gallons, so it really limits any long trips. The trunk is pretty small, mainly due to the battery location. The brakes are really strong, but way too sensitive to me and take a lot of getting used to. Overall I think the build quality on my previous Audis were better, especially the seats and interior trim, but the BMW 330E is much cheaper, so I guess that can be expected. I also don't like when the engine jumps from electric to gas while driving on the freeway, it can be pretty harsh at times and is very noticeable. Overall, it's a good car but there is plenty of room for improvement.

Now I get it - first 'real' car at 53

The car: 2023 330i sapphire (metallic black) with M Sport package and tan interior, Hi-Fi sound, iDrive 8. Didn't plan on M Sport but do think it adds a lot to the experience. Body kit, color-keyed exterior, headliner, steering wheel and other interior details, and 19" wheels are real nice but not trying to pose as actual M. Concerned that tires are staggered (can't rotate), run flat, no spare, and performance summer tires - all those are firsts for me. Had to replace a tire at low mileage due to screw in tread but too close to sidewall for anyone to repair. To match the other OEM Turanzas, I had to go dealership and spend $500. They sure grip, though :) Will switch to all-seasons for extra wear. Not sure yet I'll stay run flat or take chances with Slime and a compressor. Won't carry a spare in the trunk for sure. For reference, my cars: '87 Civic Si used in '88, '05 Toyota pickup new in '04, '09 Fusion V6 in '15. Also bought new Sequoia SR5s on '02 and '17 for wife/family. I travel a lot so drive many (many) cars, some nice but not the luxury brands. Hadn't been able to get excited about replacing the pickup then Fusion for many years. Realized I could if the choice was engaging and fun to drive but not flashy, great sound system, good utility (storage, seating). In the end knew I wasn't ready to do the 'smart' thing and buy used late model, and I do value new for many reasons. We do keep cars. Without wife's input, I probably would've went Civic Si manual $31K. Non-starter with wife and its looks are a bit too much for what it's got. Drove the new Integra manual and loved it except for road noise and rear headroom at $37K. Drove TLX A-spec, which was a clean, fun, well-built choice at $45K. Drove IS300 and IS350F Sport. They look awesome, but 300 was non-starter due to lack of power. Next step at 350F started well over $50K, had them down to like $48K but still didn't like the V6 torque vs car weight, and although seats were most comfy of the lot, the cockpit is simply in disarray. We're totally Toyota people (have a Toyota boat if you can believe it). Lexus interior was worst of the lot - looked like a team of people cobbled together prior components. Really did come down to 350F vs 330i. The next morning, we drove the 330i and that afternoon drove it home at something like $47K++. The 330i cockpit captured me immediately. So clean and looks like one very smart individual laid it out. I was dead set against tan interior and really wanted straight black. The tan trimmed with brushed 'aluminum', the silver mesh trim, and even the black M Sport headliner immediately looked exactly right - gorgeous (sporty?) from the design and trim, and luxurious/classic with the tan. The curved display felt exactly right and amazing to me - still does. I do spend most time in Android Auto with Google Maps full screen and LiveOne (legacy Slacker) streaming music. I'm new to both Android Auto and Carplay and do use the latter sometimes now. Responsiveness at low RPM (torque vs car weight) is very noticeably more fun than the IS350F. The Lexus does feel strong later into a pull, but the 330i feels ready to dance at all times. We don't have active dampers, but between 35-series tires and the suspension tune, it has literally zero 'float' but we find it great on road trips. My commute is measured on how the one or two sections play out. So awesome to send into corners! Speaking of road trips...SoCal to Sacramento cruising 80 with three adults and lots of baggage: 35 MPG with semi frequent pulls. SoCal to Phoenix 80 in CA, 85 in AZ, two adults: 34 MPG. I can totally get some 20 MPG runs if getting after it, and could see well north of 35 if MPG was the intent. So the car is so behaved and easy to drive fast, I think the normal person will be their fastest self in this car. When I have others drive it, there's no warnings to give - the car will do what you want and more without requiring a bunch of skill. Drove my friend's Mustang GT stick. Gotta work with that car - it'll get you sidways on a pull and felt a bit light in the front end on a sweeper. Much power (more) and faster, but honestly I think the 330i would be faster on a twisty road. So easy to push into turns. No stress on traction braking, cornering or accelerating. Just get in and be fast and safe. Many smart features. Example: speed limiter. Keeps you from going over a speed you set. Great in traffic across town. I am concerned about maintenance costs. Hear the dealer would prefer to replace rotors when pads are done. Declined the xtended warranty because it was $100/month for five years. That's a real $6K to extend the warranty a little bit. There are times on a pull I wish there was more power, but 90% of the time the car's as fast as I want and can always send hard enough into and out if corners. Sticks like nothing I've driven. Best quote...met up with a friend that has a normally aspirated V-8 auto M3 with an exhaust. He drove my car, I drove his and followed him around his home turf twisties. In the end, his feedback was my steering and overall experience was so precise, and he was sure I had the turbo six. Great car and I feel like the most appreciative owner. So (SOOO!) many BMW in SoCal, but doubt 10% of them appreciate them like I do.

Excellent design and performance-- the sweet spot in BMW's 3 series lineup. Mileage could be a bit better but is good considering the powerful engine and drive train. The car is fun to drive but comfortable for everyday commuting. The m340i is what most people buy a BMW for-- luxury and performance.

If you can get this car at a good price you are getting an absolute steal! I got lucky with mine and got a spec’d out 2023 rwd M340i for a great price and I absolutely love every minute of it, it’s been around 4 months since I first received it and it truly never gets old, the power, luxury, drive quality, and technology along with great mpg all come together to make the greatest modern BMW daily ever made in my opinion. I can’t recommend this car enough.it has turned all my Mercedes and Audi friends into bmw enthusiasts just from one drive in it. Truly a game changer.

Great car for fun driving. Getting use to all the bells & whistles took awhile. You must buy 220 charger so you go both morning & afternoon running on electric. I only use gas when I am showing off or want to here the car purr. Love my red interior so plush. Drives really well either in gas or electric. Trunk really small but can get my golf clubs in.

I have a 330ix 2024 loaner care right now and while the interior is very nice, the brake pedal is overly sensitive, and the transmission is not smooth, especially when it is downshifting during braking. The start/stop feature is also not very smooth. I wonder if the mild hybrid system is impacting all of these issues. This is a good car, but it just doesn’t seem to be as refined as I was expecting it to be.

3 Series is still the best car in the Sport Sedan category. I compared it to 2024 Model 3 (Highland) but came to the conclusion that Model 3 is only suitable for people who want to commute from point A to B and save on gas. For everything else, 3 Series is the better car: Driving Dynamic, Design, Built Quality, Fit and Finish, iDrive, Comfortable seating, Leather like upholstery (compared to much worse polyurethane like seating material on Model 3).

I generally buy Volvo sedans.. but Volvo has gone off the rails with hybrid only and discontinued s60.. I just picked up 2023 330i xdrive with 20,000 miles... clean car fax, car in service only 20 months so it still has 28 months/20,000 miles left on factory warranty and 14 months/16,000 miles left on factory maintenance.. loving it so far.. car retailed for $52k new, I picked it up for $32k.. runs beautifully.. idrive infotainment system takes a while to get accustomed to but I figured it out quickly... fit and finish on this car is beautiful.. drives like typical European sports car.. nimble and FAST! 255hp is a lot for this small sedan... BMW engine purrs as expected..

I love this vehicle! The ride is very smooth. It’s extremely responsive. It’s beautiful to look at it. It’s the perfect size it and it handles well in all weather. Today was a great day. Do you know why? Because I was driving my ultimate driving machine! I drove literally 20 small and midsize SUVs before I picked this vehicle. I did a lot of research and landed on it. I happen to like the interior which is probably one of the number one areas discussed in reviews. It’s simple and refined at the same time and the ease of use is phenomenal, BMW has it right on technology. I have every option available and it was worth it!

I rented a 2024 BMW 330i because I've never driven a BMW before. The Good: This 4 cyl. turbo engine is amazing, powerful, quiet and very fuel efficient, just an absolute dream. Steering is also fantastic and it drives really, really well. The Bad: Well, I've owned a lot of cars, of which only one was a luxury car and the materials inside are pretty cheap, plasticky for a sub-$60,000 car. The driver area is tight (like way too tight, I'm 5'11) the door being short, so getting in and out I found to be not fun at all. Back seat space, tight even for my 11 year old. Little things turned me off: no A/C knobs (I've heard most cars are like this now), so to turn up the air, press Fan, then turn up air. With a knob, I don't need to even look when I'm going 80. And the screen is far, so I have to stretch (someone shorter... just no way). Also, low A/C is too low, next up... low-med... blast of air. A/C is nice and cold, though. To turn on A/C, no 'On/Off', just that 'Power' icon with the circle & line thru it... just put On/Off please. Seats... basically suck big time. Whoever says they're comfortable is lying. RPM tachometer, nope... has "+Charge" from 10% to 100%... Well, I thought it was a Hybrid, but no, weird @#$ tach.. Ride is firm, wasn't too bad, I had it on Comfort, but Comfort feels like Sport.... taut. In short, not kidding here, if someone gave it to me, I would sell it immediately. This is the most overrated car I've ever driven. It IS fun, though. I'm glad some people buy them, though, because the engine/cornering are fantastic, a 10/10. BUT, love-hate for me. Sorry for the acidic review... P.S. With 25% tariffs coming, this car will be completely unaffordable.

I have had this car for over two years, and every three weeks, it has a different issue. The hybrid components are particularly problematic; it feels like a scam. The mileage has dropped from 28 miles per gallon to just 16 miles per gallon after one year of driving. Additionally, I've encountered several problems with the gas door, which often takes 30 to 35 minutes to open. The shaking screens are another frustrating issue. Overall, it has been a terrible experience.
