Generally a great car
Love the car. I'm the third owner. I have had to replace the air conditioner, and recently, the transmission. That means I will be keeping it for at least a couple more years to recover those costs. It is in excellent shape and drives like a dream, so I have no problems with that. Warning: all problems should be addressed early when they show up.
ENTER YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Never think of buying a 96 Audi A4.I have spent 10K for repairs of this car until now. Thanks God mostly paid off by extended warranty(feel sorry about them).Transmission/clutch very poor (replaced-still uncomfortable)Tie rod ends replaced and many other mechanical problems occured.Just the biggest pain I ever had in my entire life.
fun
This has been a great car to drive. Very comfortable and great handling. It did not loose anything even after 2 front-end wrecks. I agree the cup holders are a joke. If you make a fast turn, big cups tip. Dashboard layout is easy to use. I have not had any significant mechanical problems other than a fuelpump that faltered in the first year. It was cheerfully replaced while I drove a loaner.
Reliability and Maintenance are Problems
It's true -- after the initial warranty comes off, things start going wrong! I have sunk over $7k in this car since 1998. I was going to give it to my daughter. No way I'll do that no. Car is good looking and drives great but I have lost confidence in Audi reliability. Wasn't that their problem in the 80's? CV boot, air bag, rack and oinion steering, engine seals, body parts, and now the air conditioning! Even "normal maintenance" is expensive - over $700 for brake pads, etc. Dealer labor is expensive. Forgetaboutit! Buy Japanese. German is prestigeous and snobby but expensive and finicky all around. Kind of like paying to be snobbish.
RECOMMENDED
I purchased a 96 A4 Quattro with a 5- Speed Trans. I LOVE this car. It is fast enough, yet has the ride you'd expect from a $30000 car. It handles great, accelerates well, and also turns heads. The thing to Remember with Audis is this: TAKE CARE OF THEM, AND THEYLL TAKE CARE OF YOU. If you want a car that you dont have to think about, buy a Honda. But, if you like to do maintanence, or just remember to keep up with maintenence, you'll have no problems. The Audi's one car that once you drive, you may never buy another Kind of car again.
Best Used Car Ever!!!
I bought this car used just over a year ago. I have drove the heck out of it already putting more than 24,000 miles on it. No major problems, just a few leaks or normal maintainence. Unfortunately the dealership costs a fortune to fix anything. Average job costs about $500.
like... German
I bought it when it was brand new, I mean in pearl white it looks all shiny and classy at the same time. Now, at 75,500 miles it's been running pretty good, no major problems, even though I've beaten the living **** out of the poor thing over the years. Amazing. Eats brakes like there's no tommorow, and they spit tons of dust, so a week after you wash it the rims already look filthy dark. Oh and they squeak a lot, kinda like an 18-wheeler during emergency stop. Power windows scream a lot too, when you roll them down in a hot day. Power with the 5-speed is adequate.
not again
I purchased the car with 50,000 miles and drove it for another 125,000 miles. I can not say enough about the handling and performance, but that is my heart talking. This car has been back to the dealer for this, that, and the other thing 5 times each. The only thing left original at 175,000 miles is the clutch and body. Even both catalytic converters were replaced twice. Service is a headache. I bet if I added up the service repair costs, they will be more that the car cost new. If you have the cash to throw at the car, by all means you will love the ride.
A4 rules
My A4 has been very good to me. I bought it used, in 2002. It had one problem, a coolant leak in a place that's tough to get to. I had it fixed and haven'thad any other problems since. Knock on wood.
Terrific performance
I bought it used (96) in 4/99. Fantastic handling, cornering and shifting. Great Bose audio with 8 speakers. Very comfortable leather seats for long drive. I drove from DC to Quebec city - it was a lot of fun. Handles well at 120 mph (in Canada !). Overall fun and luxurious car to drive. Will definitely buy it again. Only had some trouble with front suspension once.
