Pros
- Roomy and attractive cabin
- Many desirable standard features
- Strong fuel economy
Cons
- Dull handling
- Less cargo space than most competitors
What's new
- The NX 350 carries over unchanged
- Part of the second NX generation introduced for 2022
Overview
The Lexus NX returned last year reinvigorated with revamped styling, a larger engine, more power, a new transmission and a vastly improved infotainment system. The changes have helped the 2023 Lexus NX 350 better challenge rival small luxury SUVs like the Acura RDX, Mercedes-Benz GLC and newcomer Genesis GV70.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2023 Lexus NX 350 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.45 per gallon for premium unleaded in Ohio.

Avg. Midsize SUV
For 2023, the NX carries over unchanged. That's fine for now because Lexus did the heavy lifting already. The base model offers essential features, including a bundle of useful driver aids, but luxury buyers will likely gravitate to the Premium and Luxury trims for more robust offerings: quilted leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power liftgate, and a high-def 14-inch touchscreen (optional on the Premium) among others. The latter is a welcome send-off to the distant display and frustrating touchpad controller of past models.
The NX 350 joins two hybrids, the NX 350h and NX 450h+, and a lesser-powered entry-level NX 250 in the Lexus lineup. The NX 250 is fuel-efficient and priced right, but some buyers will likely find the NX 350's larger engine and 275 horsepower more their speed. It also makes more low-end torque (317 lb ft) than its main rivals, yet fuel economy is competitive. Compared to alternatives like the Acura RDX or BMW X3, though, the Lexus lacks spirit. It's comfortable and quiet enough in a straight line, but the NX 350 isn't as sharp or responsive when the road bends.
From a practical perspective, the Lexus offers nearly 23 cubic feet of cargo space, roughly the size of a standard washing machine. That's less than the GV70 or RDX, but they're also slightly larger and longer. The Mercedes is the same length as the NX yet offers slightly less cargo space. Read our Expert Rating below to learn how the NX 350 measures up against its rivals and if it's a good fit for you.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8.0/10
How does the NX 350 drive? We tested the F Sport version and found it provides a pleasing balance of comfort and capability. Acceleration at our test track was unremarkable (0-60 mph in 7 seconds), but the turbocharged engine is sufficiently strong enough for getting up to highway speeds or passing slower traffic. Shifts from the eight-speed automatic transmission aren't particularly quick but are fairly smooth.
In our panic-braking test from 60 mph, our NX 350 F Sport logged a slighter better than average distance of 117 feet. On the road, the NX's brakes are smooth and predictable. The NX's handling inspires confidence but we wouldn't go so far as to call it sporty. The F Sport package on our test vehicle helped to minimize body roll when cornering.

Comfort
8.0/10
How comfortable is the NX 350? The NX 350 F Sport, which is what we tested, feels taut and secure without being overly stiff-riding. The F Sport also comes with special seats that have more bolstering but are just as soft and comfortable as the ones in a standard NX. The seat heating and ventilation in our test NX were fast-acting, and the rear seats offered better than average sculpting and support.
Most of the climate control features are readily accessible and easy to use. The three-zone climate system did a good job of maintaining a set temperature, but we thought the center vents were too low to be particularly effective on a warm day. Interior noise levels are relatively low, and while we noticed little to no wind noise, we did hear more tire hum than we expected.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The interior of the NX is a mix of traditional Lexus' superb attention to detail as well as some puzzling and sometimes frustrating design choices. The sharp-looking 14-inch touchscreen display is a highlight thanks to its clean graphics and quick responses.
But the shift lever adopts the unconventional shift pattern used in the Toyota Prius, which had us occasionally selecting neutral when we thought we had drive. Another frustration: the unmarked buttons on the steering wheel. Lexus has cleverly made them multifunctional, but their functions are only shown in the head-up display and require too much focus to perform simple tasks.
The driving position in the NX is easy to tailor to suit a wide variety of body types, and while the rear seating area lacks the generous legroom found in the BMW X3 and Acura RDX, there's enough space for most adults to be reasonably comfortable. Another benefit of the large center display is the crystal-clear backup camera and, if so equipped, surround-view camera system. It makes maneuvering the NX in tight confines a snap.

Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? Our test vehicle was equipped with the optional, eye-catching 14-inch unit. Crisp, easy-to-read graphics and quick responses are appreciated, but the somewhat confusing menus structure could use some refinement. Our test vehicle was also equipped with the 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. Enormously powerful with excellent clarity, it's well worth the upgrade if you have a little extra in your budget.
Wireless smartphone connectivity is standard but, strangely enough, navigation is not. After the free trial expires, Lexus charges a fee (every two years at the time of writing) to continue the cloud-based service. The NX's voice controls were slightly underwhelming, mostly due to their slow response times, even though you can do everything from changing the radio station to turning on the wipers.
The NX comes standard with Lexus' Safety System+ 3.0, which includes pretty much every advanced driver aid you'd expect. Response times were on the conservative side but we encountered no false alarms.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The NX doesn't offer the same amount of cargo capacity as many of its rivals. With 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats, the NX trails the BMW X3 (28.7 cubes) and the Acura RDX (31.1 cubes). That said, the load area for the NX is nice and wide and the cargo area is free of wheelwell intrusions, making it easy to load wide, bulky objects. Power-folding rear seats are available.
Interior storage also trails some of its rivals, but the NX does offer a fair bit of usable and easily accessible room for personal items. We appreciate the large, underarm center console storage and the hidden cubby under the optional wireless charging pad.
While we understand towing isn't usually near the top of the list when choosing a small luxury SUV, note that the NX 350 is rated to tow a somewhat meager 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. Competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 and BMW X3 offer 3,500- and 4,400-pound towing limits, respectively.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates that the NX 350, which has standard all-wheel drive, gets 25 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's about average for this class of SUV. Over our 115-mile mixed-driving evaluation route, we saw exactly 25 mpg and nearly repeated that number on another tank of fuel with a bit more city driving. That repeatability is somewhat harder to come by in this class, and we think the Lexus should be able to meet its EPA estimates most of the time. Like many other vehicles in the class, the NX 350 does require premium fuel.
Value
8.0/10
Is the NX 350 a good value? Overall we feel the NX 350 represents fairly good value for money. The NX 350 not only comes standard with all-wheel drive (some similarly priced competitors do not), but it also includes an impressive array of advanced driver safety technologies. Impeccable interior build quality is another bonus.
Warranties are on par for the class, with the Lexus offering four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and six-year/70,000-mile powertrain coverage. Roadside assistance is offered at four years with unlimited mileage, but free maintenance is offered for only one year.

Wildcard
7.5/10
Upon first inspection, it can be difficult to discern what you're going to get from the NX 350. But the NX does little wrong and Lexus has chosen its compromises wisely. The lack of performance has been balanced out with a controlled ride and the engine's easy-to-drive nature, while the smaller interior and lower cargo capacity have been offset with high levels of comfort and solid everyday practicality.
There is no question about build quality and the general stress-free nature we've come to expect from the brand. While competitors offer SUVs that strongly favor luxury over sport, or vice versa, the NX manages to offer a little bit of both without any real detriment.

Which NX 350 does Edmunds recommend?
We'd prefer to drive the more expensive NX 350 F Sport Handling on an open road, but for daily use, we'd be content with the less expensive standard NX 350. We'd spend any extra budget on the Premium package and stand-alone options like the 14-inch touchscreen and superb 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.

2022 Lexus NX 350 Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
My update follows this original review: We traded in our 2018 Toyota Highlander Limited, a very good vehicle, for an NX 350 that is totally loaded. I was hesitant to purchase a vehicle that requires premium gas and rides on 20" run flats. No problem. MPGs are good; the tires are not noisy or harsh as their detractors said they'd be. The NX is quiet, comfortable and punchy. It's roomy … inside, yet smaller than our former Highlander, which is what we wanted. The Lexus brand's promises come true in this model, a fine blend of interior quality with a composed, confident ride. Power when you want it, low end torque or highway cruising. The tech took about 2 or 3 drives to absorb. Similar, but better, than Toyota. The door handles are great, so much easier on the hands than regular handles. So is the minimal effort shifter, which is so easy to use and so intuitive, along with the memory steering column. Ambient lighting is a hoot! Sound system is beyond anything we've had before. Vary spacious. Turning off the info screen is my only gripe: you must navigate through some app taps. Wish there were just one command. "Hey Lexus" is fun! You can use her to do anything! If your screen menus are bothersome, just tell her to do what you want, and bingo. Apple Car Play in the Lexus NX is so easy. And it's wireless. No bothersome tethering, as in other "upscale" rides. And using Amazon music is a really nice addition. We are Prime members, and we use Amazon Music a lot. Still, the Sirius XM radio here is great, with a very nice layout and navigation ease. Nice graphics, too. Additionally, Lexus' own Nav system beats Apple's maps: so tasteful in its gray and blue. Wow. We are in heaven. The steering wheel menus seem tricky at first, but they are ultimately simple and logical. The heated steering wheel is heated all around! The heating and cooling buttons are logical and easy. The overall feel of the Lexus NX 350 is solid, quiet and powerful. It is fun to drive, and holds the road much better than a mid-sized SUV. The interior look of the cabin leans toward minimalist design, clean, uncluttered and tasteful. That's what we were looking for. German equivalents trended towards louder design, cluttered, more metal, etc. Lexus won us over with a refinement not found in other interiors. And this NX is super forward in its technology. The Lexus phone app is great, too. If you can find one of these, go for it.
AFTER DRIVING LEXUS NX FOR 2 YEARS
PROS: Punchy acceleration; confident cruising speeds; quietness and solid build quality; super easy door handles, inside and out, for old hands like ours; large info screen ease of use after learning it; tech touches continue to impress; "Hey, Lexi!" is great; bike fits with wheel off and seats down; exterior styling is edgy and cool; goes up our long, uphill driveway in the snow; awesome heating and cooling system inside; pretty darn good mpg; sound system is 2nd to none; low maintenance overall; really good Lexus app for phone, which I use a lot; interior styling still impresses, especially if you like a clean, minimal look; safety features become so important once you have them.
CONS: 20" run flat tires are noisy on some pavements; 20" run flat tires make the ride harsher over bumps; 20" tires are super nice, once you're going fast, though! wow; premium gas: can't get used to it; steering wheel buttons are actually nice once you learn them, but I hate the heads up display and keep it off: very distracting; would love an easier way to find mpg and trip info.

2022 Lexus NX 350 Premium 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I've had my NX 350 Premium for a few weeks now. I love it! Coming from a Maxima, I know longer have to fall in or crawl out. The vehicle drives great, with little to no road noise. I drive mostly interstate to work, and I've averaged around 24 mpg. I expected a little more, but I'm not complaining. NORMAL mode has plenty of power, don't bother with ECO, and if you try SPORT, you're not … going to want to go back. It's fun! I don't have time to review every inch, but I'm trying to hit the highs, and the one low. Mark Levinson. Don't waste your money. After I ordered my NX, I watched a lengthy review on ML, and it left me feeling so disappointed. I contacted the dealership, but if I had dropped the ML, I was going to have to wait until June to get a car. You would think a 2k plus upgrade would sound fantastic. It doesn't. Don't do it. I'm 53, so it's not like I was trying to rock a high school campus, I just like my music to sound good. My last few vehicles have had a Bose system. I wish my NX did. Last, but not least, the infotainment screen... Do yourself a favor and splurge for the 14". It's worth every single penny.
Not Impressed-too Noisy

2022 Lexus NX 350 F SPORT Handling 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
It's a fine vehicle compared to a Toyota, Honda, or most other cars. Why is it so noisy while accelerating from a stop? Even under light acceleration the car just screams. It's fine once it gets up to speed, nice and quiet then. The ML stereo is way over-rated. The fit and finish is also just average. Been to the dealer twice to get the hatchback to close properly. The battery packed it … in in the first three months, dealer replaced it. Doesn't start on occasion, it just sits there and says contact dealer. Wait a few minutes and it will start. The auto on/off will sometimes just turn the vehicle off. The run flats are fine, as is the large screen. However,
there are too many problems to be considered as a reliable vehicle. If you like to visit the dealership a lot, then it's a good buy!

Perfect size, excellent handling in curves & turns, powerful engine, extremely attractive. Gas mileage is according to drive modes. I practically stay in sport mode which uses more gas.
I had a 2021 nx300 and when I found out the 2022 is now AWD I HAD to have it. It’s the best thing I could have done for performance & handling. The 2 do not compare. 2021 was nice but this is the real … deal! Thanks Lexus!!

Lexus NX 350 vs. Acura RDX
The Acura RDX is one of the more dynamic small luxury crossovers, with a punchy engine that makes nearly the same power as the NX 350 (just 3 hp shy) and an optional sport-tuned suspension that shines when paired with all-wheel drive. The RDX is more fun to drive and, we think, the more tastefully styled choice. The NX has the edge with more cutting-edge infotainment, though, especially with the 14-inch touchscreen.
Lexus NX 350 vs. Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class
The GLC delivers class-leading levels of comfort, refinement and technology. It's surprisingly spacious and quiet inside, with a body and suspension that soak up rough road surfaces. The standard four-cylinder is quick and handling is responsive and composed, but the NX makes more power. The Mercedes is more expensive than the NX 350 and has less cargo space, but it's a small SUV that feels like true luxury.
Lexus NX 350 vs. Genesis GV70
The GV70 is the Rookie of the Year in this class. It debuted in 2022 and immediately shot past its rivals with a powerful turbo engine, standard all-wheel drive and an elegant interior. It also offers an optional V6 engine. The Genesis costs slightly more than the NX 350, but it offers more cargo space and overall headroom and legroom. No surprise that it earned our nod for Edmunds Top Rated Luxury SUV for 2022.
