2005 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

Ease of parking, limited blind spots, comfortable ride, ample leg & head room, A/C. It out performs all expectations. If you like long drives without fumbling with music options get the 6 disc CD option upgrade; this sound system will delight! Plenty of storage space & compartments for knickknacks, fold down 2nd & 3rd row seats equals plenty of storage/hauling space.

Favorite Features

6 disc CD option, advancetrac/controltrac system, simplified driver controls & instrument cluster lay-out.

Suggested Improvements

Leather wrap/simulated fabric steering whee,l standard telescopic steering column, fuel cap/tank drivers side.

2005 Ford Explorer XLS 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

Nice truck overall, nice ride, quiet cab, good handling performance, great power, acceptable fit & finish. Many "Fordisms", however, i.e. shifter on the column, fixed external wire antenna, truck like passenger seats, class II hitch, lousy radio, aesthetically challenged control panel. Minor issues if remedied would go a long way and bring the truck to the next level. Buy it to fulfill your basic transportation needs.

Favorite Features

Smooth ride, quiet ride, power, good handling, adequate fit and finish.

Suggested Improvements

Shifter, antenna, control panel, radio, passenger seat styling and comfort, basic brick styling.

2005 Ford Explorer XLT Sport 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

Had two Jeeps prior to buying a 1999 Grand Cherokee in May of 1999. It became a nightmare. Fortunately I bought the extended warranty; 6 sets of front brakes by 56K, rear axle, hood & tailgate springs, air conditioner 4 times, etc. Traded it for a 2004 Explorer in August of 2004. Explorer has been a pleasure, routine maintenance only, nice ride, lot of room, third seat helpful, took it back and forth to Florida, good trip car, have the "6" would suggest the "8" if you do highway driving or towing. Would buy another one but would get the 8 cylinder.

Favorite Features

Ride, room, third seat, good driver seating position.

Suggested Improvements

6 cylinder a little underpowered, back up vision restrictive, still a little top heavy on the curves.

2005 Ford Explorer XLS Rwd 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

Right now the deals on these are unbeatable. For the price you need to pay to get into one of these there is nothing out there that can touch it. It has an average-above-average rating as a mid-size SUV at a small car price.

Favorite Features

Design (interior/exterior) is much further along on the XLS than you would expect from the truck manufacturer.

Suggested Improvements

Could use a more responsive pedal. Coming from an fF-150 with a 410 rear-end makes this seem a little luggish so far. But I get the top end of the gas milage projections.

2005 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

This is truly a family vehicle. We have the DVD system and seating for 7 which has been used repeatedly. The automatic 4wd is great. We were running through 15 inches of snow this winter with no problem. We get 18+ mpg and drive the vehicle very hard.

Favorite Features

The Roll Stability Control works flawlessly for hard braking on bumpy roads or in curves.

Suggested Improvements

Make a factory navigation system available.

2005 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4WD 4dr SUV (4.6L 8cyl 5A)

Review

This was purchased for my significant other, who uses it for her work. She picked out the truck, which is a well equipped Eddie Bauer, with V8. There are two chief complaints, the ride is "bouncy" which she likes, but I don't feel like I have as good of control of the vehicle as I do on other SUVs. The other major complaint is the motor sounds like a sewing machine or a threshing machine and is quite loud from under the hood. Other, less important concerns are, the rear seat controls are very stiff (possibly because it is new) and difficult for a diminutive woman to use. Dash and radio controls are confusing.

Favorite Features

I like that the towing electrical comes with a 4/5-pin adapter. Some of the safety and driveability features of more expensive European cars are available.

Suggested Improvements

Firmer or more "European" suspension. Get rid of the "Automatic 4WD" and let the driver decide.

Review

This SUV is worth a serious look. Roomy, comfy, plenty of power. Well laid out interior. MPG is less than I would like, but great pricing buys a lot of gasoline.

Favorite Features

Comfort, ride, build quality.

Suggested Improvements

Telescopic steering wheel.

2005 Ford Explorer Limited Rwd 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

I bought this vehicle for my wife and she loves it. The new chrome wheels, step bars and roof rack really set it a part from the others. Gets lots of looks, and has the upgraded stereo that sounds great. Best sounding radio I have ever heard in a factory Ford. Had my doubts about the V-6 but it has plenty of power, although if I was going to do much pulling I would go with the V-8, but only 20 or so horse power difference. All the power the wife need to carry the baby and groceries.

Favorite Features

The color, which is the new Ivory. And the controls on the steering wheel are great once you get use to them.

Suggested Improvements

Only thing I can think of is that I would prefer the fuel cap to be on the driver's side. When it is raining or really cold it stinks to have to run all the way around the car.

Review

I recently looked over several SUV'S by different auto manufacturers. Was looking for a roomy, safe, comfortable, reliable, and smooth-riding model. Came to find out that, dollar for dollar, there is nothing better offered for sale, foreign or domestic. Not talking about exotic, show-offy gas burning models designed to impress people with money to throw away. Drove it to Florida and back from the northeast and had the most comfortable and satisfying ride, and I've made the trip several times. Plenty of cargo room and great mileage on the highway. A solid choice - you can't go wrong.

Favorite Features

Smooth ride - comfortable seating.

Suggested Improvements

Can't think of one off hand.
