Bad Geman engineering
I bought my Passat GLS 4cyl Auto in Aug02.The 3rd day the "premium" sterio "Monsoon" stopped working.Got that fixed. In the 3rd month car started vibrating uncontrollably. The dealer said the ignition coil has to be replaced & there is a backlog of orders for the ignition coil.Time to get me a replacement??Anywhere between 2 weeks to 5 months. And the dealer located in NY said they couldnt give me a loaner car.So I had to call the VW.10 min. of haggling over the phone got me a rental car.Now I drive an Alero and my 25,000$ VW is still with the dealer.More problem fuel.VW suggests octane rating,92 & above.Dealers suggests octane rating of 87!!
Before you buy one...
Don't buy this car! Not unless you enjoy throwing money out the window. My 2002 Volkswagen Passat was good for the first few months. Then it broke down on me in Indiana (coils). The A/C system stinks. It has broken three times. The check engine light comes on all the time. No joke, it comes on every few hundred miles. I take it in, pay a butt load of money for something stupid, then a few miles later it comes on again. This is the most unreliable car I have ever owned. When working it rides nice and looks nice, but I would give anything to have my 1997 Honda Civic back. Buy a Toyota or a Honda, buy ANYTHING, just not a Passat. Most positive reviews you will see only have a few miles on the car. I have 65,000. its junk.

Poor Reliability
Have had nothing but problems with my 2002 Volkswagen Passat since it was bought new. The engine light comes on at least four times a winter with evap issues, I had to replace glove box door, the shifter, and a pump. My Saturn was more reliable than this. Too bad it is so fun to drive.
IT'S NOT A BMW OR A BENZ
The Passat is a wonderful car and despite the review's title, I do like mine. In my opinion, it falls far short of either the BMW or the Benz in most categories but, it doesn't cost over $45,000 either. This more than makes up for any of the car's shortfalls. German engineering at a bargain price.
Redefines sport touring sedan
This is a great sport touring sedan. It is very nimble and has excellent "street habits". I would strongly recommend to anyone. The AWD system is superb. Tiptronic does the job quite well. If you are looking for a 4 dr sedan to provide "double duty" - family sedan and performance car - then this is it!
