IT'S NOT A BMW OR A BENZ
The Passat is a wonderful car and despite the review's title, I do like mine. In my opinion, it falls far short of either the BMW or the Benz in most categories but, it doesn't cost over $45,000 either. This more than makes up for any of the car's shortfalls. German engineering at a bargain price.
Redefines sport touring sedan
This is a great sport touring sedan. It is very nimble and has excellent "street habits". I would strongly recommend to anyone. The AWD system is superb. Tiptronic does the job quite well. If you are looking for a 4 dr sedan to provide "double duty" - family sedan and performance car - then this is it!

Keep Looking
I've now owned 2 passats now and what a joke! I fell in love with my first one (2000 model) and I although I loved it, thought I may had just gotten a "bad" car. After consistent repairs, I decided to try another newer version. I got a 2002 and same thing; if one things not messing up, it's another. The car looks good and goes fast, other than that, it offers nothing but a waste of time and money. I am very sad to have to report this!
Oil burner
I fell in love with the awesome look and style of this car. (Fatal Mistake). From the day I drove off from the dealership, I've grown to dislike this vehicle. Above 45 mph it shook, and vibrated. After 970 miles it burned 1 quart of oil. The dealership advised me that was within the proper range of oil consumption. I was told that it comsumes oil rather than burns oil..go figure. I have a Nissan Sentra with 210,000 miles and has never burned a drop of oil. Needless to say this is my last VW product. It is a beautiful car, but the beauty in this car is truly only skin deep. I leave it in the garage and drive my nissan, saves on oil. Hope to unload the Passat soon...
Love my Passat 8 years later
This was and still is my first VW. I love the way it handles, even now at 133000 miles on the odo. Original clutch. Only issues were with ignition coils and radio(replaced under warranty years ago) and a power window regulator (last week). Last week, VW also replaced the trunk lid and remote trunk release -- there was a rust spot at one of the license plate lights and this moisture had caused the trunk release to malfunction. My dealer experience has always been excellent. Sure you pay more than for an independent, but the guys at Hunt Club VW (Ottawa Canada)understand the value of customer service. My next car will be a VW.
