An Awesome Family SUV

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe
I purchased my Santa Fe XRT in March of 2024. These past two months driving it have been great. I receive lots of compliments on the new body style. I will say, it looks a whole lot better in person. If you aren’t sold on the design from photos, I would recommend going in person and checking one out yourself. The 2.5L turbo in a family SUV makes this almost feel like it isn’t a family … SUV. It is more than enough power and torque for us and most families. The wet DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) shifts seamlessly and it at times, it is almost unnoticeable, unless you’re really paying attention to them. The interior features and safety features across all trims are what set this vehicle apart from others, while being below their price point. That, paired with the 10 year powertrain warranty and a really good Hyundai Dealership will keep this vehicle running for years to come, especially with regularly scheduled maintenance. I am receiving over 20mpg driving in the city of Virginia Beach and into the 30’s driving on the highway, so I am receiving well over advertised MPG’s with what should be the worst trim level for MPG’s. To be honest, I do not have a lead foot. I am usually a speed limit driver and get passed by nearly everyone. The XRT’s tires and height difference do not really make that much of a difference in feel. The interior cabin seems no louder than when I test drove the SEL. It does help when loading a child into a car seat, which leads me to my next favorite thing, the inside space. Due to the boxiness, the interior is a bit bigger than the previous gen Santa Fe and it shows. The third row is actually useable, especially if you are transporting people under 6’. This is a big family’s dream. There are TONE of cup holders. The leatherette seats and plastic are easy to wipe down. Plastic…this leads me to some of the things I dislike. There is a lot of plastic used in the interior of this vehicle. The plastic used in the center console feels super cheap. It creaks on hot days. The creaks happen when driving and going over bumps. It almost sounds like a house settling. I am hopeful that this will stop in the future and it isn’t totally a deal breaker because once the vehicle cools off inside, the creaks stop. The plastic is the same throughout the vehicle and in the trunk, when the seats are folded, stuff in the back can slide around and damage the plastic. There are already scratches on the arm rests in the third row from our stroller hitting it. I just wish that instead of that cheap feeling plastic, Hyundai would’ve opted for a softer touch material. For the XRT, it seems as though US trims do not come with the advertised Skid Plate. The fact that a more off road trim doesn’t come with 360 degree cameras is baffling to me as well. The XRT, considering its ability to tow 1000lbs more than other trims, does not come with an included tow hitch. Why? That doesn’t make sense to me either. Back to the good. The infotainment system works great. Wireless Apple CarPlay works awesome with no sudden disconnects like some vehicles I’ve used. The sound system is basic but perfect for people who are just playing Disney songs for their little ones like we do. The HDA is awesome and makes long trips much more tolerable. Sometimes it may feel like the vehicle struggles to stay centered but it hasn’t traveled outside of the lane, even on curves between 65-70mph on the highway. I found the best way to use it is to lightly hold the steering wheel because if you hold it too tight, you will most certainly be working against the steering wheel while it’s trying to stay centered, causing much more side to side sway. The smart cruise control is amazing, it even notices when a vehicle jumps in front of you going faster than you are, not slowing you down but keeping speed instead of braking. While other times, it will slow you down because someone is exiting in front of you and out of your lane. That part can be annoying. If you stick to the center lane, this isn’t an annoyance. The safety features work great. Blind spot monitoring works in the rain. Just have to keep the sensors clean. Overall, I love my 2024 Santa Fe XRT. The drive is clean and smooth. A perfect vehicle to compete with the size of the Palisade at a more affordable price.
