2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road 4dr Double Cab 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
After owning three other generations of Toyota Tacomas, I chose to get the newest generation. After three seperate returns to the dealer for transmission trouble, the transmission finally gave up out on a desert road in Mojave. Leaving me stranded with a $45,000 paperweight is maddening. These used to be great trucks. Now I cannot trust it to get me home. I had to lemon law mine for … transmission failures.
Front bumper valance is flimsy

I bought a 4x4 2017 Tacoma thinking I can use it as a outlander vehicle but before I could use it, the front bumper valance was washed away during the tax day flood here in houston. I bought a replacement and installed it and even drilled the underside to mount two bolts and nut to secure it. But when hurricane Harvey came it was washed away again with my plate number with it. How in the … world would you consider this a an offroad vehicle if a foot deep of water will rip the front bumper valance out. I emailed Toyota customer care and was told to call but when I did, I was informed that I was the only one who was complaining about it. So I went to sterling McCall Toyota dealer and again was told that I should only drive my vehicle on roads with less water, for 4x4 is only good for traction but not for a foot deep of water. Frankly , I'm very disappointed!!

To be honest, I was not in the market for a mid-size truck when I started shopping for a new vehicle, but after a ton of research, the Taco offered the best "bang for the buck" so to speak. My 2007 Avalanche was stolen, so I was forced into the new vehicle market. That Avalanche was the best truck I ever owned hands down, so I was pretty biased going to the various dealer lots. … After driving the new GM's, and Fords and in seeing their cost, I opted to go to a used car lot. They had a 2015 Tacoma TRD PRO that I test drove and I felt really good in the truck. Since the cost of the 2015 was only $4k cheaper than what a 2017 brand new one was,(gotta love how these hold value) I went for the new. After 4 months of ownership, I thought I'd throw this review out. First out, the truck is really a good truck. It does the daily commuter routine really well, and the V6 has the oomph to get out in front of traffic when you are merging if you really get on the gas pedal. The off road capability is incredible and really impressed me on some back country fire roads on my occasional fishing trips. I haven't used it yet, but I really do like the piece of mind the "Crawl Control" gives me. The gas mileage is as advertised, but I'm a bit of a lead foot, so you may even beat the estimated if you are light on the gas pedal. All the "technology" features are user friendly and intuitive. The real problem I have with this truck is the size. I'm a pretty big guy, 6'1" 240, so the truck with me, the wife, kid and dog makes for a pretty cramped feeling that I never got with the full size truck. If you are coming from a full size to this class of vehicle, definitely work with the dealer to see if you can test it out over a weekend so you fully grasp the space you are going to lose. My other big issue is the carpet is a pain to clean dog hair out of. For some reason it acts like velcro when you try to vacuum it up, but that isn't that huge of an issue because duct tape works wonders for this task. It just takes a lot longer to clean out than my old vehicle did, so again, I'm biased. My third gripe is the seats. I've tried every setting they have and I can't get that comfortable, its almost like I'm between settings - either my back is too upright or I'm too laid back. Also, not being able to lower the seat brings me to bump my head on the roof on bumpy terrain. This is annoying but not overly so. Toyota really needs to have a power seat function. For the money, you can't beat this trucks functionality and of course they hold their value really well. The amount of accessories you can get from both Toyota and 3rd parties is incredible, and they add even more functionality to a very capable and functional truck. Overall I'm happy with my purchase.

I waited to make this review after 1 year of driving. I love the high stance and ground clearance that have always made Tacoma’s stand apart. So far I love driving it. I am happy with the power and the peace of mind knowing it will last me many years of trouble free driving. After all, it’s the same engine found in Lexus, Sienna, Highlander and Camry. I agree the transmission likes … to shift to the next gear quickly but I am getting decent mileage. Averaging 21-22mpg on regular fuel. If I get tired of the early shifting, I can press the ECT button and I’ve got plenty of power to keep or pass fellow motorists with ease. I can tell the interior material will last. The cloth seats and interior plastic feel very durable. I personally love the seating position. Toyota could put a little more features in the vehicle but the lack of cutting edge features is what helps keep Toyota reliable. Love the power sliding rear window. I get plenty of compliments.
Update
At 30k miles I have had a great experience. Still drives like new. So far I’ve had to replace the rear brake light due to a leak and battery died right at 2 year mark. Other than that truck has been very reliable.

Driving
3.5The Tacoma steers and handles with quiet confidence on the road, but the V6 engine and its automatic transmission don't always respond quickly to inputs. All Tacoma 4x4s benefit from Toyota's off-road design emphasis, but the TRD Off-Road is particularly capable when the pavement ends.
Comfort
3.5This new Tacoma rides smoother and quieter than the one it replaces. The climate control system is refreshingly simple and effective. The seats are accommodating, but the high floor tends to make tall drivers wish for more adjustability.
Interior
4.0Attractive interior is nicely laid out, with easily understood and effective controls. The cabin has plenty of space up front, but tall folks may disagree. Biggest shortcomings are the relatively tall step up to the cab and an odd driving posture, both side effects of the need for ground clearance.
Utility
4.0The Tacoma's composite bed has lots of smart cargo management features, and there's a decent amount of places for items in and around the cab. Its tow rating isn't quite class-leading, but it isn't far off the mark. Child seat fitment in the crew cab favors forward-facing seats and boosters.
Technology
3.5We generally like the touchscreen audio system because it has large virtual buttons and employs knobs for volume and tuning chores. Supports smartphones with a proprietary Entune app instead of the more universal Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lags behind Honda Ridgeline in advanced driver aids.
