We have loved almost everything about this car except getting to the hydrogen fuel stations. When we bought the car, we were told that one would be opening within 6 months a short distance from our home. A year and a half later, not only did that not happen, the two stations closest to us- 20 and 30 minutes away- are now consistently out of fuel. In the past 6 months we have had to be towed innumerable times as we didn’t have enough fuel to keep going back and forth to the stations to check if they have fuel. Toyota is fully aware they have a problem and they accommodate by offering to pay for Uber/Lyft and car rentals ($50/Day limit) but we have literally had to go a week without the car on more than one occasion. Not only is there not enough hydrogen to meet demand, there are no additional stations on the horizon. We live in Los Angeles (Burbank) so it’s not like we’re in the middle of nowhere. It has literally become unbearable. An hour to and from a station only to find they’re out of fuel. Then waiting days for fuel to arrive and then having to sit in a tow truck to be towed to a station once they finally get fuel. Simply put, the situation is so bad, we’re going to arbitration to get out of the lease. I wish we had never leased this car.

Toyota's white elephant

ED, 12/01/2021

When i first saw this car on the lot and all the high end features it had i thought it was an insanely cheap price. it was not certified so no 15k fuel card with it but i dont drive a lot so i figured it was worth the 12k i paid for it with only 8988 miles on it, it was pretty much new. then a few times i would go to fuel it and the fueling station pump would be out of order. This got worse and worse and the fueling stations were a 60 mile round trip to fuel. at $70 cost to fill it, wasting money driving to a working fuel station wasn't worth the aggravation. The fact that this car is only drivable in northern and southern CA , means not out of state trips (except for Reno if the Sacramento & lake taho hydrogen stations a working). I finally got fed up with this problem and traded it in for a gas powered camry. Save your money and forget about hydrogen, it is not worth the irritation you will constantly suffer owning this white elephant. it's trade in value is horrible! i lost about 5k on the trade in value of this car & it's also only good for ten years as printed on the gas lid. i guess the tanks aren't supposed to be fueled after that time. The dealer conveniently left out that part when i purchased the car. Also this car does not get the reviewed mileage per tank that's is bragged about all over YouTube. It is stated that this vehicle is supposed to get 300+ miles on a tank fill. The most i have been able to get is 250 miles per tank and if you're going uphill, expect even less.

Significant Design Issues, Buyer Beware

Krishnan Srini, 08/10/2018

I wish I could recommend this car to others given the breakthrough fuel cell technology and the ramifications of this technology on the state of the environment, but I simply can't. Within the second month of leasing this car, we found the Mirai leaking coolant onto our garage floor. Upon taking it to the dealership, we discovered that a pebble from the road went through the front grill and bust a hole in our coolant tank, causing this issue. The design bug is likely due to the way that the Mirai takes in air from the front grill to supply the fuel cell with oxygen, exposing many of the internal components to the external environment. The worst thing about this issue is how Toyota decided to resolve it: refusing to acknowledge their design mistake, forcing us to pay $3000-4000 for the repair (to pay for their liquid gold coolant), since their own design mistakes are apparently not covered by the warranty with the car. And on top of the insulting response from them, they are able to offer no guarantee of fixing this problem in the design, which means the car is still unprotected from any stone on the road. Our dealership has told us that several other customers (with the 2018 Mirai) have come in with the same issue, meaning that this is a widespread problem. Avoid this car, if possible.

Southern CA/big thumbs up

After looking to replace VW TDI that's part of emissions lawsuit with a car that's truly eco-friendly, I settled on the Mirai and leased one on Friday, 12/9/16. The current lease deal of $349/month + tax required just shy of $5,000 in total drive off which is entirely covered by the CA clean air rebate program which currently still has funds available for fiscal year 2016-2017. The $15,000 card that Toyota includes with the lease to cover hydrogen refueling should be about twice as much as I'll ultimately spend (note that insurance costs more for the Mirai than my VW so some of the monthly fuel savings is eaten up by that). I don't want to pay cost for electricity/charging an EV at work and being able to get ~300 mile range by fueling in 5-10 minutes was a lot more appealing to me than going BEV route, even if hydrogen fueling stations are fairly spare (although should get better in 2017). In terms of the actual driving experience it's a lot more fun to drive than a Prius or the new Prius Prime (which I had initially put down a $500 deposit). It accelerates quickly, has a really nice interior and the exterior look has also grown on me. I think we can all take concrete actions to help limit climate change and supporting the development of fuel cell vehicles and infrastructure is one way to do that. A few days in this has been a cool and easy to operate car that's been fun to drive! Definitely recommended!!

Review of the 2019 Toyota Mirai.

We leased our 2019 Toyota Mirai in the first week of May, 2019. We had a Nissan Leaf from 2014 to 2017. What we like about the car: Car feels heavy and safe; The "Warm White" interior is nice and cozy for 4 people; The seats have high quality leather; No sunroof; The longer driving range comparing to most EVs on the market; Our full size cello in the case can fit in the trunk! What could have been better: The steeling wheel is kind of heavy, especially at low speed turns; The windows could have been darker from the factory; The climate control panel is way down in the center console causing drive distraction; The active driver assist designed in the mirrors could have been moved more inwards; The sound of turn signal could be louder; Not enough storage space or compartment inside the car; Limited trunk space/depth. Overall, we're happy with the 2019 Toyota Mirai.

Great car only if you can get the fuel

Vinny, 10/27/2021

I've had the car since Dec 2018. I like the car itself a lot. I enjoy the boost it offers at traffic stops, (not as good as Tesla if you are wondering, but good enough to beat most non-sports Gas cars). I enjoy the features which usually are only offered in premium trim, such as adaptive cruising, heated front AND back seats) I also definitely enjoy the free fuel I'm getting which is clean for the environment. You shouldn't buy the car as it depreciates from the listing price of 50+K to about 11K in 3 years, which I only paid around 15K for. But I didn't have to pay any additional cost for fuel or maintenance. The clean energy rebate covered my down payment. For that kind of monthly repayment, it's hard to get a car with all the nice features offered by this one. Now to the Cons. First of all, Toyota has some weird obsession with their own smartphone integration, they simply won't support Android Auto. I think this is finally fixed in their 2022 models, but their navigation system is on Mirai. I had to use my phone for navigation. That's about the only complaint I have for the car itself. Now the worst part of being a Mirai owner is how much time and effort you waste on getting the fuel. There's a few problems for this. 1. The supply chain of Hydrogen is super unreliable. Early 2019 there was an explosion at local refinery and damaged the hydrogen delivery truck fleet, we had sustained hydrogen shortage for about 3-6 months. And we had another shortage in the Bay area in Aug/Sep 2021. 2. The stations itself is super unreliable. You may see a station has fuel, and by the time it's your turn, the station would shut itself down for a good 10-15 minutes. Every refill takes an hour even if there's only 2-3 cars in front of you. And there's the risk of not getting any. Sometimes, even if the station is working, you may only be able to get half tank. I did some research online and understood that the stations usually have a main tank and an intermediate tank. The hydrogen is pumped into your car from the intermediate one, which also needs time to refill from the main tank. This works fine if there's only one or two cars at a time, but when there are 20 cars lining to get filled, the intermediate tank would lose it's pressure and can't put anything into your car. Refilling the intermediate tank takes 30-40 minutes. This means everyone have to refill more often, which means more traffic at the station, and longer queues each time you go. I've seen multiple Mirai parked at the hydrogen station as they probably don't have enough to make a round trip. Around Aug 2021, most of the stations near my home is offline, the supply chain had another shortage so about one station is getting one to two refills a week. I once went to a station at midnight, and there were still about a dozen Mirai waiting in the queue. For three days in a row, I go to the station, wait for an hour, then the station is shutdown. It was really frustrating. So that's my experience with Mirai. If their supply chain of Hydrogen can be more reliable, if they can fix the station technology so it doesn't have to wait 10 mins between refills and always fill up to full tank, then it's a really nice car to lease. Otherwise you'd be very likely to spend your Friday nights contemplating your life choices at a hydrogen station (wish I could attach a photo here).

It is absolutely horrible to keep fuel in this car. If you like 5 to 10 car lines to get fuel, the get one. They advertise 310 miles per tank, but I get more like 210 miles per tank. The stations are often out of fuel or broken. 3 weekends in a row last summer 2/3 to 3/4 of the stations were out of fuel. There were long lines at the few stations with fuel. Up to 10 cars in line to get fuel. The system that tells you which stations have fuel is UNRELIABLE. There have been over a dozen times in the last 6 months where the system said there was fuel and I could not get fuel from the pump. I have called the fuel company and been told that a station was online while I was standing at the pump and could NOT GET FUEL FROM THAT STATION. It keeps getting worse as they add more cars to the road and add only minimal extra capacity. I have asked if I can return the car because it has gotten so bad, but Toyota has refused to do anything. I am VERY UNHAPPY!!!!! Now they are selling the used Mirai's that came off of leases. You get 3 years of free fuel, but after the 3 years, the cost of fuel is outrageous. Current it's $70 for about 210 miles and the fuel price keeps going up.

The mileage range per full tank keeps reducing

Granteton, 12/09/2019

Overall, the Mirai is a good car. One thing that's really bothering me is the total mileage range per full tank keeps reducing every time I refuel. The first refuel after I got the new car, I got about 290 per full tank (this is an estimation in the dash meter immediately after you refueled). The more I drove and refueled, the range kept decreasing. I just refueled yesterday a full tank and it gave me only 212 miles range. Toyota said this is a 310 mile range car, but I have been using this 2019 Mirai model only for 4 months. I took it the dealer and they could not find any issue with it. They kept saying it depends on my driving habit, but no, this range isn't about my driving habit; it is about how many miles per full tank of fuel right after refueling. Is anyone experiencing the same with this mileage issue?

Great Car and Fun to Drive

I have been driving 2017 Model for a week. It looks great. It is fun to drive and good MPG between 50 to 70 miles per 1KG of hydrogen. On the downside, hydrogen stations are still limited and only available in California. Hydrogen is also expensive though Toyota offers free hydrogen for three years. So, the only option is lease.

Don't buy or lease Mirai

Han Kim, 04/23/2021

I purchased a 2017 certified Mirai from Longo Toyota. Price was very attractive and the complimentary fuel card worth of $15,000 made me thinking that it was a no brainer. I heard that the hydrogen stations were quite bothersome because periodically they ran out of fuel, but I decided to buy the car. The car itself has been okay but the people at Toyota are not ready to support the customers. 90% of the time, fueling stations are indeed out of fuel especially on weekends. Only place that you are guaranteed to get the fuel is Torrance station. On my way to Torrance, tire went flat and this was the second time that the tire went either flat or ripped off in half. It must have been the bad batch of tires that the dealership had installed. I had to call "FREE" roadside assistance and they refused to take the car to the tire shop. They could only tow it to the nearest dealership from where I was. Long story short, it took me 4 hours to tow my car to the dealership and I found out that only few numbers of certified Toyota dealers can service Mirai. If you ever run into an issue which you require help from Toyota, don't waste your time calling Toyota for help. If you leave far away from the certified dealership, your car can't be serviced elsewhere. If you file a complaint, you will be offered with $100 VISA gift card without sincere apologies. I used be a big fan of Toyota but I would never buy Toyota brand again. Any potential buyers, don't let the complimentary fuel card make a bad decision.
