Corolla’s have come a long way!

2020 Toyota Corolla SE 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl CVT)

I just leased a 2020 Corolla SE Sedan with the Premium Package and Audio Plus w/ JBL. I already love it. I upgraded from a 2016 Scion iM and the improvements are instantly noticeable. Driving Dynamics: I’ll start off by saying the iM handles very very well. The thing lacking with that car was the power. It has the 1.8L 4-cylinder (still found in the 2020 L, LE and XLE Corolla’s) that gives you 137hp. It left a lot to be desired. The new 2.0L 4-cylinder in the SE and XSE Corolla’s is a huge upgrade. It gives you enough power to confidently jump out into traffic and to easily get up to highway speeds. Also, the new CVT has a physical launch gear that gives the Corolla more pep when accelerating from a stop. The new Corolla, now being built on the TNGA platform, also handles very nicely around corners. I would say the iM may have felt a bit more planted, but the new Corolla does the job very well. Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS): Just, wow! Having the new suite of safety features that’s standard on EVERY trim of the 2020 Corolla is a life-changer. When enabling adaptive cruise w/ lane tracing, you barely even have to be there. Although recommended for highway use only, I have used it driving home from work on long straight streets. As long as there is a vehicle in front of you, it will come to complete stops, resume and even stay in your lane through intersections when there are no lines (because it’s following the vehicle in front of you). All you have to do is keep a hand (or knee lol) touching the steering wheel so it thinks you’re paying attention. Of course, TSS is used as an aid and is not a replacement for safe and attentive driving. Interior Features, Quality, and Comfort: The interior of the new Corolla is beautiful. High-quality soft-touch materials line most of the entire cabin to make this vehicle feel a lot more premium than its class would suggest. Everything is laid out very well and is easy to use. Also, the list of features you get in any new Corolla is very nice. Standard in the SE is a nice 8-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay (no Android Auto but I couldn’t care less), all auto one-touch up and down windows, a 4.2” color multi-informational display in the gauge cluster, sport cloth seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, and more. Then, with the packages in my particular Corolla, you get push-button start with Smart Key access, a moonroof, a premium JBL audio system that sounds absolutely beautiful, Remote Connect (remote engine start from a smart phone, smart watch, or even an Alexa device, and yes they all work) and Blind Spot Monitoring. The seats are very comfortable places to spend time in, although I have not been in the vehicle for over an hour straight, yet. The car is also very quiet inside while driving and it is very smooth over bumps for having a sport-tunes suspension. My overall opinion on the car: This car is nice...in every way really. I couldn’t be happier with it. The LE with the Premium Package should satisfy most customers. But if you want more power upgrade to an SE at least. If you want top-of-the-line, the XSE is the way to go. The XLE would be good for your grandmother who wants nice features but doesn’t care about acceleration. However, really with any trim of the new Corolla; you can’t go wrong.

Wiper and transmission

Our company has 3 2020 Corolla SEs with CVT and we are having problems. The wipers, when set on intermittent, will suddenly freeze in mid stroke and not move unless the lever is moved...happening on all 3 cars. Local dealers says there is nothing wrong and can't find any problem....all three cars? This MUST be a factory defect for all 3 cars to do this. CVT transmission lunges and jerks in shifts when under.light throttle that is increased and decreased.

Windshield Wavy but not a defect

Bought a 2020 Corolla SE. There is several waves in the windshield. The dealer service and Toyota corporate claimed this is normal and in all like models. Not considered a defect and not warranted. Before buying check for this NON-Defect during test drive. If you cannot live with it, buy something else. This and road noise causes me to rate this auto lower.

First manual transmission review

I have the manual transmission. A lot of others have reported road noise. This doesn't seem to be a problem with the manual transmission. At least not with mine. Getting great gas mileage. After 3 months 32.6 mpg combined. This car has one of the best shifting transmissions I've ever driven.

Car broke down after a week

I had high hopes for the vehicle because I had a good experience with an older Toyota Corolla model. Two days after purchasing this brand new vehicle, I noticed a weird high pitch sound while driving. Almost like a buzzing noise. About a few more days, I noticed that the gear was having a hard time changing. At one point, I spent over a minute forcing the vehicle to change from reverse to parking but it wouldn't. After moving the gear back and forth, it eventually changed. Now a week later, the gear is stuck again. This time, it was stuck for over an hour and we had to call a towing truck. I'm writing this review out of a kind place to warn everyone considering this vehicle to be careful. I think there is a bad batch of 2020 Toyota Corolla LE made and a potential recall. Please note that my vehicle is an automatic base model.

Engine stalled, car would not restart

Tammy V Oxnard, Ca, 01/16/2020
2020 Toyota Corolla LE 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl CVT)

Safety and reliability on this car doesn’t even deserve one star, I leased 2020 Corolla LE in August 2019 and in December 2019 the car engine stalled in the middle of the road and the car would not restart the engine codes that fired off per service department were P1603 engine stall, P1604 startability malfunction, P1605 Rough idling, the Toyota service team claims to have found contaminated unleaded gas in my vehicle, which i found can not be true because customers have been pumping gas at the same gas station which is a pretty well reputable gas company and no other vehicles have been affected, With no other choice I needed my vehicle repaired and was forced to pay $500 in repairs right before the holiday, of course they said it was not covered by manufacturers warranty, they said I needed new spark plugs and they siphoned my fuel tank and did not properly clean out the fuel tank, my engine light is still coming on and now they are telling me I may need to replace a catalytic converter, which I was told If engine light doesn’t resolve I will need to be ready to pay additional money to repair and replace, just found the Recall all over the news outlets was just announced by Toyota about 2018-2019 Toyota Corolla have recalled for bad fuel pumps. I strongly believe my 2020 I bought in August 2019 is also related to this recall as I had the same symptoms occur with my corolla and I am very concerned about the safety of this car. I feel taken advantage of and ripped off by Toyota service team and will be going back to dealership where the vehicle was serviced to ask for my money back and have the vehicle fully repaired or see about turning this 2020 corolla back in, also note, less than 24 hours of leasing and driving it off the lot the rear passenger tire blew out on the freeway with my children inside the car causing the vehicle to fish tail on the freeway and Toyota roadside assistance could not locate or help me after 2 hours of waiting on side of freeway, I had to call highway patrol myself after Toyota roadside agent claims local police and highway patrol were not available to be reached to dispatch for help. After a long battle about the tire replacement Toyota finally agreed to replace blown out tire after initially wanting to charge me for replacing the tire that literally ripped off the rim. I’ve owned and leased several vehicles over the past 20 years and this 4 month old 2020 Corolla is the most unreliable vehicle I have ever experienced, please be consider this review before considering purchasing or leasing this car.

Ample leg and head room. Positives: stylish, inexpensive, great gas mileage, good visibility and lots of safety features. Negatives: road noise, touch screen is slow and should be angled more to the driver; automatic parking break release is abrupt or jerky—you know when it has released! Good value—would buy again.

I am 61 years I have been driving for 45 years and have owned over 20 cars in that time. I have just taken delivery of a Corolla SE upgrade package and it is terrific. Acceleration is brisk, comfort is excellent and I know that the reliability will be off the chart . Even the fuel economy exceeds manufacturer’s claim! The Safety Sense is excellent and easily understood. Extremely happy with my choice. I would recommend this car to friends and family.

Positive and Negative

Positive: Smooth steering, many safety features as standard, reasonable price. Negative: Road Noise, thump noise from the back when brake (gets annoying) Updated days after driving more: My wife and I didn’t notice on the test drive as it normally is a short test drive but I recommend you to do test drive on red light areas and try to stop often, you will hear a thump noise every time you stop. We thought it will go away, It DIDNT, we took it to Service just a few days after we bought and guess what, EVERY 2020 Corolla has this problem, service couldn’t fix it. Toyota HQ are involved considering they didn’t want to acknowledge it is a defect but clearly it is as no thump noise every time you stop can be justified as engineering reasons. If you are okay with hearing that every time you stop go ahead but I wouldn’t recommend this vehicle to anyone, hear it for yourself and think twice.

Fix the Entune and I'm a Believer!

Bear, 02/23/2020
2020 Toyota Corolla SE 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 6M)

We bought the Corolla SE with the 6-speed. The clutch is buttery, the gearbox precise. I'm 6'2" and I can get comfortable, as can my wife, who is 5'3". The 2.0 engine has enough for a kick of fun. We put in the TRD airbox, airtube, and filter. Really helps throttle response. Buy the components separately (not in the kit form) and you'll save a couple hundred. The seats are comfortable, but the ride is a bit harsh (probably due to the 40series 18" wheels). The handling is flat and direct. Handling is on par with a Focus ST, horsepower is not. This puts out 169hp, which is nice for this car, but... The Entune audio system is clunky and obnoxious. We're looking at a Camry in a year or two, but if Toyota hasn't fixed Entune by then, we won't consider it. It is THAT bad. Backup camera is clear, but lacks guides for turning. You get a straight box back that doesn't vary with turning the wheel. The laser cruise is easy to use and it is easy to adjust following distance from 3seconds (default) to 1second. The SE with MT does NOT have the different driving modes like the XSV. The steering is a touch light, so I would have liked to have a "sport mode" or something to tighten it up a bit. The iMT rev matches as you downshift (think "electronic double clutch"), but you have to engage it and anytime you stop, you have to push the button again or it turns off. We are driving this mixed city, highway, and hilly/curvy. We flog it, and are averaging over 33mpg. If this is like my last Toyota, that digital reading is optimistic, but either way, for the fun this car provides, I'll take it. Ours had been on the lot for close to a year (no one wants a MT anymore) and the dealer was willing to deal. We paid over $4,000 less than MSRP. That included dealer and Toyota incentives and no financing. Your mileage may vary.
