Researched midsize sedans for a couple months...

...and the Legacy came out on top for my family and me. I drive about 40 miles round-trip for work each day and have a two month old son. My wife and I traded in an older SUV and wanted a midsize sedan that would comfortably hold a rear-facing car seat while also achieving high MPG on the highway. High safety scores were also very important to us, and the Legacy delivered on all fronts. I drove several competing sedans but settled on the Legacy because of its spacious cabin and AWD. I've had the car for a couple weeks and love driving it. I was very close to buying a 2012 Fusion but didn't quite feel right. The Camry didn't feel right, either. Both cars pale in comparison to the Legacy.

2013 Subaru Legacy Limited... The interior toys are not as modern but functional and reliable. It definitely out performs the 2012 Nissan Altima we lease. Handling is great, power is smooth, MPG consistent 28 mixed up to 33 - 34 hwy, depends on how you drive. The AWD is incredible and the car feels solid and glued to the pavement... In a 2014 NJ winter the traction was flawless blasts through snow... Subaru's have a great road feel and confidence you cant get from other 4 cyl. FWD cars. The Legacy eats it all up, rain, mud, dirt, snow. People who drive my car say wow.

A Dream Ride

I just got it so this will be a preliminary review. So far I'm very impressed with this "freshened up" model. Very attractive vehicle, quiet interior, good power. Have only driven one day but am fairly car savvy and know about Subaru since it's earlier days. They keep improving on a good thing and don't cheapen their cars like other companies to save money. I saw the car in April at the NY auto show. One of my old cars was up for inspection and I decided to trade in for this puppy. So far, I love it.

I work for Pepsi and am driving 500 Miles a week. I only fill up once a week. I get between 450 to 480 Miles before the gas light comes on. I'm seeing these reviews about the stiff ride, and I would have to disagree. I think it rides nice and just like any car should ride. I drive about a third City and the rest highway and get real calculated average of 30 mpg almost Everytime. When it's half And half City and highway and is 29mpg. I think the car is great and the mpg rating is a little underrated by the factory. I would definitely test drive one Amd see for yourself before these crappy comments decide for you. Very nice car.

I bought this to replace my wife's aging Toyota Corolla. We wanted something with AWD that was more roomy than her old car and still got above 30mpg highway. On paper, the Subaru fit the bill perfectly. With the updates to the transmission, engine, and chassis for 2013, I was much more impressed than with the 2012 and older models as far as throttle response, steering, and overall feel of the car. It was an easy decision to get the added room and 30+ hp over the newly redesigned Impreza.

We have owned our car since new in 2013. In that time, the car started burning oil at 40,000 miles. This happens to about 15% of all Subaru owners and they don't advertise or admit it. I knew this was a risk in buying this car but it did take place on our H6 engine. All I do is every 1000 miles between oil changes (every 5000 miles with synthetic although Subaru corporate claims you can go 7500 miles on non-synthetic) is check the oil level. Also, confirmed with Subaru corporate you can put an additional 0.9 quarts of oil in the car with no bad side effects upon changing the oil. It burns about that much every 5000 miles so when it is time for an oil change, it is still about full having burned off the extra 0.9 quarts. Besides that problem however, the car has run quite well and it does handle the snow and climbing a mountain daily very well. Of course, being acceptable to burn nearly a quart of oil every 5000 miles should not be the case but that is the way it is with Subaru. Also note this car is not as comfortable as driving other cars, like Buick, Honda, or Toyota. The seats on long trips are adequate but nothing more. The electronics leveraging Harmon Kardon for the entertainment/GPS/Bluetooth technology is klutzy and generally works but not well. The recently (purchased) GPS software upgrade works better and now is better, but there are still concerns. When you start the car and backup it puts a black box up telling you Bluetooth is active (or not). Before the upgrade it blocked the whole screen and made it useless (you have to resort to looking over your shoulder like you used to - or stop and wait for it to go away). With the update, it now blocks about 33% of the screen so it is better and you can keep backing up knowing the middle of the screen will be blocked when you start backing up after starting up the car. Another issue is the Bluetooth itself. Even if the phone is registered with the car, it will not always link to this Bluetooth system. As a result, sometimes after starting the car you have to manually link up the Bluetooth to use it while driving. What we like about this car as it is reliable - nothing has broken in 107,000 miles of driving. What we don't like is the constant oil consumption and the poor usability of the electronics. In buying from other brands they are all superior in execution. I know Subaru recognized this and in the next generation Legacy built their own electronics designed interior, it does not help this generation. Last the climate controls are decent when it gets cold, as the car stays warm down to -10 Fahrenheit, but in the summer the AC has trouble keeping up above 95 degrees which fortunately does not happen frequently where we live. Still a comfortable sedan that is holding up. In the eighth year we now have 119,000 miles and the master brake cylinder failed, a $500 repair and the first repair needed. Still burns oil and is still generally reliable. Also had fail the rear wheel bearing ($500) and the front struts ($1000) as the roads in CT cause suspension problems on any car after about 125,000 miles. Edit update: Now at 9 years old it has not really developed any other concerns at this time. The battery needs replacing, which is maintenance as did the tires and some rubber seals which wear out at this mileage on any car I have owned. Now after 10 years the suspension needed replacing. Rear wheel bearings, front struts, front springs. Also the engine coils were cracking and needed replacing. This all happened between 130,000 and 140,000. A total of $5000 over the last year, almost the value of the car. The last half year and 6000 miles no more issues. So we are keeping it for now having been told the H6 engine with 5 speed transmission should last 200,000. After 10.5 years and now 143,000 miles no further concerns. The past year the car has been trouble-free again. With the suspension problems out of the way it appears it is a nice reliable car for us. Now 12.5 years old and no further problems. Battery needed replacing again but besides that maintenance it is still reliable with 150,000 miles on it.

I've been driving the 2013 Limited PZEV model for almost a week now, after my 2000 Impreza was totaled in a hit & run. One word - awesome! I test drove a 2.5 2012 Limited before trying the 2013 2.5 Limited - and they are worlds apart. The DOHC CVT changes in the 2013 model make a huge difference to the pick up and make the 2.5i engine feel much more capable. The interior space is great, the hands free works well and voice activation is very handy. Bluetooth audio streaming works well. Commuting on the peninsula <-> San Francisco I am currently seeing about 24MPG with fairly hard driving. I think EPA numbers are fair. AWD with the options on the Limited model make for value hard to beat!

Best kept secret in mid-size cars

Very worthwhile investment. With 3,000 miles on the car, I am getting 33 MPG on the Hwy and 21 in the city for a combined 27 MPG. I got the navigation with Eyesight and the Harman Kardon stereo and it makes for a much more attractive dash layout. This car is a blast to drive! The boxer engine has a nice note under heavy acceleration. The seats are very comfortable front and back. The HVAC works excellent, and the controls for the Bluetooth, nav, handsfree, and audio system are very easy to learn and use. Steering is tight and responsive. Build quality is excellent - no rattles or squeaks at all. And snow? This car loves it! It sticks to dry, wet, or slippery roads like glue.

Best Deal out there: Legacy

Our new 2013 legacy is fun to drive, looks great and is comfortable. I come for a long line of SAABs and am spoiled by great seats, the Legacy isn't as plush but they are firm and offer very good support. The Nav system is better than our Honda Odyssey. On my first tank of gas I've averaging 25.2 in mostly city driving. This is the Limited model w/ upgraded stereo, works great w/ my iPhone 4s, downloaded my phone book w/o issue. With a EQ few tweaks, it sounds fine. I had shopped the Impreza but the Legacy is just more car, quieter on the road, better seats and stereo. Very happy w/ my choice.

Perfect If You're Looking For An AWD Sedan

I just purchased a 2013 Legacy with only 14k miles. I previously owned a 2008 Ford Escape. I wanted a car with better gas mileage that also had AWD. I was originally looking at Crosstreks, however, they are hard to come by pre-owned and the Legacy was a great deal. This is a great car if AWD is a must for you and you don't want to spend a lot of money. I wouldn't recommend the Legacy if you are looking for a real sporty/peppy ride. I don't find it boring but the CVT took me a while to get used to. It feels a little sluggish at times and is awkward in stop and go traffic. It's also pretty noisy. The steering is solid/heavy and you feel glued to the ground. The visibility/mobility is better than any other car I have owned. I can switch lanes very easily on congested highways. It's also super comfortable and roomy. Overall, I like the Legacy as it has everything that is important to me. It has AWD, good gas mileage and was under $20K. I also like it because it's different. I didn't want to drive what everyone else out there has. I can see why Legacy has such a loyal following. It's a unique driving experience and that can be good or bad depending on what you're looking for. I made out pretty good and will probably look at Subaru's again.

I have 24,000 miles on my 2014 subaru legacy 2.5 and have had to add a full quart of oil FIVE times already and this is not including the 3 oil changes I have had as recommended at the dealer. Subaru feels this is within specs and refuses to acknowledge a new car should not be burning oil, especially at this high rate. The hands free does not recognize what you are saying and is awkward. Ride is stiff and noisy, the doors do not lock automatically so you have to remember, the heated seats go off and on,again subaru says that's normal, my daughters jetta's seats stay nice and toasty . The AWD is great but other then that I am not impressed, will be trading it in as soon as I figure out what I want, spent a yr researching before I bought this. Will never buy another subaru again, they refuse to stand behind their products and think it's okay to burn a quart of oil in between oil changes on a brand new car

I've had the 2013 4-cyl. Legacy Premium for about 7 months now, and love the car. Picked it up for $22k including the all-weather mats (recommended). The main reason I bought it was the AWD, since I live where it snows a lot. The car is a beast in the snow, even with the regular tires. It was 11 degrees today with the car sitting outside, and it started without a hitch and plowed through about 5 inches of snow on the driveway to get to the street. It has plenty of room - it's larger on the inside than it seems from the outside, and the trunk is large too. It's comfortable, solid and well-handling to drive.

I narrowed my search down to two cars, the Subaru Legacy Sport and the VW Passat TDI. Both impressed me but living in Vermont, the AWD made the most sense. I must say I am very impressed with the Legacy Sport. I am averaging over 31 miles per gallon with mostly highway miles. Great looking car and handles very well. Sport has 18 inch wheels but wish it had 16 or 17 inch wheels which would cost far less when I changed tires. Ride is nice and smooth though with the sport model, I suspect the regular Legacy models have less stiff suspension. My family has owned several Subarus and have never had a problem. Highly recommended !

After owning Audi's I am more than a little surprised. Build quality (ie. timing chain vs. belt) is very solid, it is understandable why Subaru's push the mileage limits. CVT trans offers a low hum in city driving but have been told that this will disappear around the 5K mark

Bought a 2.5Limited w/moonroof...after about 1500 miles, I'm pleased. I was skeptical about going to a 4-cylinder, but it seems to have plenty of power around town and on the hwy...it works well with the CVT, which is one of my favorite features-smooth acceleration. Interior is well laid out and very roomy - front and back. Seats are comfortable and the Harmon-Kardon sound system is great. Simple, clear ipod interface and bluetooth connection. Build quality is excellent.

Excellent twist between a sport sedan and daily

Just traded from an 07 Nissan Versa so this is a whole new animal. Very spacious interior with classy color coordination. 6 speed manual is sporty, no doubt, but feels somewhat disconnected and doesn't seat the same as most clutch systems I am used to. I live in Colorado on the Base of the Rockies and bought this car in the dead of winter and it hasn't given me a bit of trouble even in the worst conditions. Very passive handling on the road, so a smooth ride as far as that goes. That being said, it is paired with an award winning drive train AWD, so it sticks to the lane no problem. I am also 6'3", and this car has room to spare with me. Leg room has always been a "make or break" factor with me and car buying, so I am happy to finally "fit in". The aggressive front bumper in the model I have looks sporty and choice, but gives the car a very low clearance so driver beware. I catch about 23 mpg in the city on my daily commute to work. This is a good figure, but certainly not the optimal EPA estimate. Reading some other reviews and I guess there is one consistent problem with these cars: they eat too much oil and coolant. Factory defect, likely but nonetheless mine is currently being looked at to make sure that is the case. If it is not, the warranty is extensive enough to were I would just be able to slide into something new, no harm no foul. Aside from this, well designed and reliable car.

114,000 Miles - Still Running Strong

I purchased the Legacy Limited, leather and had some dealer options put on. The car has been great so far. I am averaging 32.1 mpg, and have had no issues. The defrosters quickly clear the windshield and windows. The controls are simple to use and anything that was more technically advanced was taught/demonstrated by the dealer like setting up my bluetooth and phone. My kids find it cool that my car rings and we can just talk and not have to hold the phone. I tested the car with a decibel app and the interior is very quiet ranging from 50-80 decibels, compared to over 90 with my Pacifica. Update: 65,000 miles and no mechanical issues at all. I just had a major tune up to the cost of $700 but everything was fine. I do mostly highway driving and still have my original tires and brakes. These will get replaced this summer, but there is no abnormal wear. Handles the snow amazingly, great mileage, very comfortable. No wind noise yet and all interior parts are in perfect condition. I had a friend buy a 2016 Legacy based on her loving my car. I have had a few hiccups regarding syncing my phone and car, but that is more user error and my phone than the Subaru. The hood bounce is still noticeable, and no it is not a reflection bouncing. The metal is flexing back and forth but I do not notice it much any more. I have needed no warranty work but do have the extended one until 100K. My son is looking forward to getting this car when he's a driver soon. I can't wait until I get my next Subaru also! Update: 82,500 miles. Replaced serpentine belt and both headlights. No mechanical issues, still have the original tires and brakes - dealer inspected both and they said I was still good. MPG dropped to 29mpg but our state speed limit went up to 70mph so gas mileage suffered. Tiny worn spot on the drivers seat where the leather seat and plastic seat belt guide by my left hip rub. Still running strong - no complaints. Subaru dealer in my area is awesome and all maintenance done there has been exceptional. Update: 114,000 (October 2018): No mechanical or electrical issues at all. I maintain and service the vehicle at the dealership every 7500 miles for oil changes and tire rotations, plus any recommended services. I am having the brakes replaced for the first time next appointment, but only because I am at 115,000 miles and have not done it yet. The paint is still shiny and the leather is holding up fine, the car looks great. Now, I drive mostly highway miles and only occasionally have more than 1 other person in the car. Mileage is still good and all accessories work properly. No complaints so far. In a few years, the kid will get the car and I'll most likely get a new Subaru. Update 105,000 (April 2018): MPG still around 29 with 90% highway driving. Replaced tires with originals since they lasted so long the first time (about 100k). The last time I went in and had the lube, oil, filter, rotation they finally told me I might need brakes this summer for the first time! No interior noises or wind noise so far, very solidly build car. The only issue is the gas cap won't "pop" open very far. This has to do with 2 things - 1. the metal bracket on the inside needs to be bent back out and 2. the plastic tie to the gas cap sometimes gets stuck behind the tab and the door won't open without another person's help. Once I bent the tab and remembered to keep the plastic tie in place, I didn't have any issues. The kid is going to inherit this car in a few years so he's helping me keep it clean and maintained.

After weeks of serious comparison and review, I settled on the Subaru Legacy as a new car purchase. The fit and finish is fine and the car is very comfortable and has excellent room for passengers. It is a mid-size vehicle. The car handles well and very little body roll in sharp transitions. The dash layout isn't as pretty as some competitors but the seats are excellent and the Harmon/Kardon optional sound system is good. Interface with iPhone was easy. My only disappointment at this stage is MPG, it isn't returning what I expected. The CVT is smooth but I didn't see anything close to 32 on the HWY on my first road trip. I'm not a heavy foot driver and not a jackrabbit start or stop driver

This is my second Legacy that I have leased and I made a mistake not purchasing the 2011 at the end of the lease. I really loved that legacy. Now I have the 2014 legacy sport and I can not get past the poor ride. On smooth roads you can enjoy the car, but any road that has bumps or cracks is felt. I thought it might be the 18 inch tires or that maybe needed to get broke in a little. I have 13,500 miles on it and no such luck. This is my third Subaru that I have leased, but I am so unhappy with the ride that I will not be leasing from Subaru again.

The Legacy is the best Sedan out there. Great MPG, eats snow up, and go off road, through mud, anything the height can handle... The CVT is good and delivers good shifts and MPG. Car looks good and you can feel the road. I had a camry and Altima lease and they are boring and poor performance and heavy feel. The Legacy feels great when you go AWD wheel drive... My Brother got an outback and its fantastic. Subarus are a 1500, to 2500 more then the others but you get a diffrent car. Boxter engine AWD, handling... Vs. In line transverse 4 banger like all the rest... MPG is 25.5 for me but when I drive conservatively you can get 28 city and up to 33 hwy for AWD... Safety small overlap test...

Love my new (used) Subaru!

This is my third Subaru in the last 30 years (two of them used). When I was looking at this car I also test-drove 3 used Subaru Legacies. The others were a year newer with fewer miles but the rides were poor. The pickup on this car is fine. I love the CVT. I am so happy with the paddle-shifting! It is wonderful for complete control in snow, and uphill and downhill! I have only had the car for 3 months (Oct-Jan).. The things I don't like are: Takes a long time to warm up. I don't like the trunk-closer "handle" hole - it's not sturdy and can't close the trunk - you have to push down on the dirty trunk cover after all. I am very short, and the headrest on the driver's seat was almost a deal-breaker for me, but I've gotten used to having NO real neck support as my head goes into the big hole before the very high headrest pushes forward (who likes to have THAT?). Lots of cars have that now. Also the paint seems to be a joke. I noticed immediately that I should keep my keys away when going to the door, or I'll add to the many scratches! The trunk is ENORMOUS and I can't believe it can hold more than my old wagon's trunk. This car has nice amenities! I love the winter package. Everyone else is scraping their cars and I sit in there and wait for it to do itself! But I wish it had fog lights! They told me those would be $500 to add. But this one's trim level is MUCH nicer than the cars with fog lights (lower models). Both of the other cars I test drove had better brakes. I love that the hood goes up by itself when you unlatch it; no stick to have to push up high to hold a HEAVY hood up (Getting harder for a short, older woman)! Also I think it's silly that the inside light goes on SLOWLY when you open the door! But I am mostly totally delighted with my "new" car!

Bad Ride

I only had this 2014 Legacy 2.5i Premium for only two weeks. It's my first Subaru. It has a lot of good features, but i'm having a hard time enjoying them. The ride is hard, it seems like you feel every little bumb in the drivers seat. I'm very disappointed! Traded a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix with 136,000 miles, it had it's issues, but rode great and was still fun to drive. Can't say the same for the Legacy. I'll have to give it some time. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think so. I might have to take a lose and try something different. Let me know what you think!

The 2014 Subaru CVT is garbage

This is my second Subaru, still have my 2006 Legacy 180k. Love it.. The 2014 is nothing like the 2006 starting with the CVT..noisy and takes 3 seconds to engage going from reverse to drive. The feel of the trans is terrible. Acceleration is fine but man do you know you are getting there with all the sounds the trans makes. Had a dealer look at and he said "their all that way" so the trans is fine, just noisy as heck. The heat in the 2014 takes forever to come to heat. My 2006 is light years ahead with respect to the heat. The 2014 has been 5 star reliable, I have 60k on it with no issues and original tires. I am amazed how this rubber is lasting. Man has this trans turned me off...literally hate the car because of it and will be trading in soon. BTW, my wife rolled back into someone the other day because this trans allows you to roll back (like a clutch)...yes there is a button to manage this but come on, she has no clue about that. My daughter has a Honda HRV CVT and I thought it was an old fashion trans, thats how good it feels. Maybe Subaru made progress here, will try a 17 to see but if its anything like the 14 I am high tailing it out of the dealer and going to Honda.

Bumpy and Sluggish, but fabulous in snow

I traded in a 2009 Altima Hybrid that could not make it up hills in Wisconsin winters. The worst front-wheel-drive car I ever drove. But I digress. I did buy the Sport model, as it looked a little sexier than the base. It's as close to a head turner as Subaru can produce. I do like the look. The AWD handles beautifully in this climate, in a city that doesn't like to use salt. However, the ride is punishing. You do feel every bump. After 12,000 miles, it's still stiff. Going Zero-60 takes bloody ages compared to other cars I've driven in this class. I do believe this car can easily go 200K miles.

Having driven other brands such as Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi. I switched to Subaru Legacy because I heard that they were solid cars! I have no regrets! The handling is superb, very stable at high speeds and certainly fun to drive. I had a 2007 Subaru legacy and upgraded to a 2013 Subaru touring Legacy which was a sweet buy. 2013 Subaru is certainly better at gas mileage as compared to the 2007. The latter year is roomier and of course the SI drive is great. I am yet to explore the sport plus mode! Go get your Subaru legacy you wont regret owning one. I live in Jamaica and the roads are bad here and all my Subarus that I have owned have been with me for 5 years and more with little front end work. Still going on in 2022. My only drawback is the CVT.. Solenoid at times fails and then they rather you buy an expensive valve body!!

2 years and 49,000 miles later

I bought this vehicle as an upgrade from the vehicle I had previously been driving for commuting ('98 Grand Prix GT). Pros: Decent gas mileage- I get right around 29.5-30mpg per tank of gas- though it can dip to around 28mpg in winter months. Handling- the ride is a bit stiff, but it handles really well. Looks- Vehicle has very nice styling. Reliability- I've had no major problems so far. AWD- This was the biggest factor in choosing this vehicle. Winter traction is very important to me and this vehicle handles very predictably in snowy/icy conditions. Interior- I'm 6'4" and I have plenty of room, head room is greater than any other sedan I looked at. Rear seats fold down and make it possible to move fairly large objects. Cons: Oil changes/oil usage- more expensive (around $75), though done somewhat less frequently than with vehicles using dinosaur oil. I typically have to add a quart of oil 6000 miles after an oil change, as the engine uses some oil. In 3 previous vehicles (chevy, pontiac, nissan), I've never had to add oil using Dino oil with a 5000 mile oil change interval, I drove the vehicles 175K, 250K, and 260K miles respectively (all purchased new). Intermittent rattle - something in the moon roof rattles occasionally, it seems to happen only within certain temperature ranges, its a bit annoying. Acceleration/transmission- CVT transmission takes some getting used to, feels like driving a golf cart- acceleration is a bit slow, but adequate. Overall, I would buy another, though I would probably opt for the Outback, for more cargo room.

I traded my 2011 Nissan in on the 2014 Legacy. My Nissan was horrible in the snow and I live on a very steep and dead end hill (that is hardly plowed or salted) in Pittsburgh. I never made it up the hill in my Nissan even a dusting I would be spinning and sliding. The first snow we had about 1" and it was somewhat icy and my Legacy went straight up it without a slide or spinning of a tire. I am so pleased with the performance in the snow so far. I do agree with a few of the comments above. I do feel a lot of the bumps and things whereas my Nissan I didn't. The driver and passenger seats to squeak some and that does drive me a little crazy. After it took my hill of a mountain I am not even concerned!! I would recommend the Subaru Legacy to anyone!!

Overall, it's a very good car. Not a rocket ship but more than adequate acceleration. Driving carefully at 70mph+ I get almost 35 mpg. Handling is solid especially in snow (of course). Here in Cleveland I don't necessarily need winter tires but if I drove more or lived in mountains I would get them. Leather seats are attractive and comfortable, visibility good. Car looks good. Ours is white. Kind of generic sedan but the Limited version adds a little bit of class. I have had no repair issues. Only normal maintenance. Criticisms; Now that I am a little older (65+) it's a little low, particularly the front passenger seat which, I believe is lower than the drivers seat. I think if I had it to do over again I might opt for the Outback which is higher (but not too high) and of course, has the station wagon cargo space which is nice for bulky items. I have a real complaint about the design of the center stack and climate control. Although it looks OK, I find myself looking for the heater controls and taking my eyes off the highway for much too long. I have developed the habit of trying to adjust climate control only when the car isn't moving. The buttons are too small and there is no tactile feel for the controls to do it blind. Very bad. Also, the emergency flasher button is located directly in front of the shifter. It's very easy to hit the button with your knuckle as you put it in Park. My wife did do exactly that and didn't notice she hit the flashers. When she came out of work at the end of the day the battery was dead. Annoying! I think the controls have been redesigned since then but have a look if you are buying. Otherwise, great car! As of April 2020 I have about 93,000 miles. No significant mechanical issues, only scheduled maintenance. I had a trailer hitch put on to pull a light, 1,000lb sailboat. No issues.

I chose this car because when I bought it I lived in a city with harsh winters and I needed a reliable, AWD option. I researched for over a year and decided to go with the Legacy over an SUV because of the gas mileage and the reliability of the Subaru name. The size of the cabin is great, and I can fit 4 large adults in here comfortably. The biggest problem I have had with this car is the gas mileage. At this point, I have driven it 4200 miles and have had an oil change and am still not getting above 21.9 miles to the gallon. I drive the freeway to work everyday and should be getting at least 28 combined. Even on a highway trip of 1200 miles, the best mileage I got was 29 MPG.

I've had this vehicle for about a month, scoring on excellent president day sales. My first Subaru. Very solid feel to this car. Engine/CVT still breaking in but performing nicely. Excellent gas mileage-up to 33MPG highway. Combined around 27mpg. Handles well on dry and wet pavements even with the crappy Bridgestone tires it came with. Haven't driven in the snow yet, but I expect it will really shine then. The ride is firm but a bit choppy. Road noise is present but well within acceptable limits. The driver's seat and position is stellar, as is the visability. The "upgraded" six speaker stereo is fair at best. Overall, a reliable car that does most everything well with AWD standard!

VERY POOR HEATING AND COOLING

The heating and cooling systems in this car are so substandard as to make me regret buying this car, it is hot most of the year and the heat isn't adequate in the winter, especially in the lower compartment. The mileage is not what I hoped for, as I drive in stop and go traffic, but it is good if you do mainly highway driving. The noise level is also unacceptable. Clearly Subaru emphasizes the safety aspects of their cars, but the comfort aspects of the car, especially climate control and noise level, are really lacking. The design, inside and out, is lackluster. On the positive side, the brakes are excellent and the turning radius is great for city driving. The four wheel drive is excellent in snow and ice.

Stiff Ride negates positives.

I have driven this 2014 Legacy Sport for three months. The reliability of Subaru, all wheel drive and heated seats are all positives that are negated by the poor ride quality. I feel every dip, bump and tar strip in the road and will be trading this after a year. A younger driver might not care about the ride because the car looks sharp and handles well. I owned a 2001 Subaru Outback station wagon for 6 years and it was reliable and a comfortable ride with reasonable handling in not too large of a vehicle. If they built that vehicle today with an improved transmission I think they wood sell a lot of them. I appreciate any comments and criticism. November 19, 2016. After all this time Edmunds has requested that I update this review. I bought the Subaru in April of 2014. When winter and cold weather came around I found out that the heat when set to blow at floor level does not blow on your feet or ankles or legs so you freeze. Nothing worse than cold feet. The front seats were not well designed and even with power driver seat I could not get comfortable , and I take long trip every month from NYC to Massachusetts. The bumpy ride continued and I could not stand it, feeling it smack by backside on every little tar strip. In April of 2015 I traded this car with just over 9,000 miles on it, for a 2015 Nissan Rogue which I have had now for a year and seven months. Smooth ride especially on bumps and I don't feel the tar strips in the road. Very comfortable seats, heat blows on my legs, very large touch screen and navigation with back up camera as well as camera view of all four sides. Very happy with it. May 22, 2018. Edmunds asked me to update my review again. I stand by my original comments. I still own the 2015 Nissan Rogue SV -technology package, large screen Nav and all-around camera, smooth ride - that has just short of 40,000 miles on it. Far superior to the 2011 Subaru Forester, 2012 Subaru Outback, and the 2014 Legacy - all of which I purchased brand new and had harsh rides, uncomfortable seats, and a heating system that blow very loudly on high when you selected "floor mode" but no air came out around your feet or legs. The all wheel drive has worked well through three winters both upstate and downstate New York as well as on muddy dirt roads in the Catskills.

I had the 2010 Subaru Legacy and it was a great car so I got the 2013 Legacy. Big mistake. They changed the suspension and now the car has a harsh, noisy, jittery ride. From a great car to a lousy one. I get 17 mpg city, 34 highway. There is no noticeable improvement in handling nor any improvement in mpg. OEM tires are not good. They're noisy and neutralize any benefit you get from an awd vehicle. Subaru lost me as a returning customer. Will not buy/lease one again.

I bought my Legacy brand new with 21 miles, 3 years later And it has over 80k miles on it. I originally bought the car because in Colorado, it's important to have AWD. The car does great in the show and ice and I have no issues in that department. As for my moonroof though, within 2 months of owning my car I had to get the entire moonroof replaced due to significant leaking. I don't know if it's just my car, but it still leaks, not as bad, but it's gotten into the headliner and through the interior lights. Interior is fine, although I regret getting the tan cloth interior, I wish I would've upgraded to the V6 with leather and navigation. The ride could be smoother and the road noise is extremely noisy, which makes it hard to use the Bluetooth. I do, however, love the Eye-sight system with adaptive cruise control. I won't buy another Subaru again though.

My wife wanted the Subaru Legacy for quite some time. Finally when it came time, I decided I would give one a try. We bought it with the plan to keep it for 6-8 years. The first thing I noticed when test driving was the strange feel of the seat on the back of my thighs. It was irritating for maybe a few weeks then I stopped noticing the seats were different from most vehicles I've owned. I drive about 17k miles a year. Probably 45% hwy and 55% city. I am impressed still with the mpg. It seems like I rarely have to fuel up. I get avg about 26mpg and I'm not trying. The back seats are large and passengers find them comfortable. There are though too many things I hate about this vehicle though.

I traded in a 2012 2.5i Premium for the 2013 2.5i Sport for the new performance upgrades. The best way to describe the '13 model is disappointing. I can't question the AWD performance of a Subaru, it handles almost any road condition with ease. The acceleration on the '13 is sluggish from a stop but crisp at higher RPMs. I think the acceleration on the '12 was better overall. I was averaging 31 mpg with my '12 and only 26 with my '13. The Sport interior isn't all that impressive, the seats may feel softer but they also show dirt and lint far worse than the '12 interior. The new suspension is stiff and bone-jarring at times. Camry's run the same 18' set-up with a much smoother ride.

Have been enjoying this car for over 7 months (about 8000 miles). I share it with my wife. Some of the negative reviews I've read may be by people that don't own this car or think they own it. Subaru hit a home run with this model and I started driving their cars in 1978. Their engineering prowess is put to the test here and they did almost everything right. The handling, power, transmission, fun factor, stereo, blue tooth, visibility, seating, comfort, all blend into a symphony of joy. It looks good and awd will get you through the worst weather with confidence. Mileage has been very good. 25 city, 31 (or more) highway. People with crappy mileage are lead footed.

It is almost a greatest car. Road handling is great which is why I purchased the car. Interior layout is great. Controls are intuitive and well place. More gauges would be nice instead of the dummy lights. Three very fundamental flaws exist in the drivetrain. The car has grown is size & weight yet the engine has not. The engine can not hold the car going down a hill in any gear even fairly mild one. I think a 3 liter four cylinder would do a better job. Flaw two and three lie in the transmission. First gear is way too high. Parking lots are a clutch riding nite-mare as 7 mph is the slowest possible without the car jumping and bucking. Serious hills require 5000 rpm and long clutch riding to get started on. Chucking the 5th gear ratio and making a new first would solve this. Really, a reverse gear made for 45 mph! Still riding the clutch the car is doing 6 mph is reverse.

Ruined. Just. Ruined. When I bought my '07 Legacy, I fell... in love. The car had an understated elegance. There was an attractive aerodynamic look. Exterior lines flowed, interior lines flowed. Materials, though not luxurious, were high class. The fabric in the seats was classy *and* robust. The doors were rimless. The center console employed a minimalist design that made it pleasant to look at and easy to use. The Legacy has... changed. It now resembles a Ford sedan. The aerodynamic of its tail has disappeared. The doors are rimmed. The seat fabric is cheap and thin. Heck, all interior materials are cheap. The center console is overdone and resembles Optimus Prime. Optimus, go away.

It's got ho-hum styling inside and out. It's been rattling/squeaking since about a week old. It gets slightly better gas mileage on the freeway than advertised. It's comfortable. It has lots of room inside, even for tall people; more head room than every other mid-sized sedan that I tested. It has plenty of power at almost any speed. It's a little noisy at freeway speeds. The blue tooth works well, but I would change it. The CVT is a little weird since I can't tell what speed I'm going by the sound of the engine. The 6 gears are a plus for fuel economy. The paddle shifters are cool, but automatic works great without them. However, I like my 2004 Mazda6 better in almost every way!

I see where they gave this car a bad rating on fuel economy I will have to strongly disagree with that. My girlfriend gets 650 - 700 kms on a full tank of driven mostly highway. Will get approximately 600 if driven mostly city. Overall I think this is a very reliable car. I gave it a 4/5 because of the stereo system. There is no way to update navigation system on a 2014 car! Not even a 10 year old. To make it even worst she have the eyesight and factory amp so there is no way to replace with an aftermarket stereo, it simple won’t work. She is stuck with 2012 maps! Yes 2012 maps. Why would Subaru work with a company that decides to discontinue the map updates and make it impossible to get it done. Am not impress with “HERE” that’s the name of the company responsible for the navigation. Overall it’s a good car.

Check Edmund on details and recalls. Since I bought this car brand new I don’t have any problems only regular maintenance. Very good in the snow and any weather.

Failing Headliner!!!

The headliner began to fall away from the rear window 2 weeks after the warranty was over. The car was leased and Subaru (after some hassle) paid to have a new headliner installed. The car is leased and I don't know if they would have covered it if I had owned it. No one seemed upset or even too interested in it. Expensive repair!!!
