This car's alternator went out at 36,000 miles after the warranty was up. It went out again in 2000. The gears shift badly. Reverse gear is terrible. It gets awful gas mileage around town about 22mpg.

My SC2 was the first car I ever bought. It had 93,000 miles on it, and had had work done. I never had any problems with it, except for the brake cables came loose every now and then and it habitually overheated, until it hit 115,000 miles and then everything went at once

I bought my SL1 with 82,000 miles on it hoping it would get me through a couple lean years before I could afford another car. Now, 4 years later, at 130,000 miles I have passed it to my son who is a poor college student. He loves it (and I like the low insurance rates and I bought another used SL1 with 36,000 miles.) For mechanical reliability, I'd recommend the SOHC engine.

Reliable... the damn thing won't die

I got this car (new) my freshman year in college. Wow, has this thing been reliable. This is a great car for anyone looking in this class. Have had very few, if any, mechanical difficulties (10 years is a long time to remember)and it has been through everything. In fact it has been so good that I've been waiting for the damn thing to die or at least start "acting" bad so I can justify getting another car. The dealership was and still is great!
