The Workhorse for Commuters
I bought this as a get to work vehicle. It has NEVER left me on the side of the road, and this morning, only has front bumper damage after a fender bender collision with a 2008 Nissan Frontier in the rear side tire as it passed in front of me. My damage is minimal...less than the truck. No one hurt and it drove away. So, it is pretty durable! Get 24-26 mpg in commuter driving, and closer to 30 mpg on the highway. Good headroom, decent radio, solid heating and cooling. Just a solid "clunker" that you can rely on, while you are driving past new cars breaking down and be without a car payment. If you find one out there, probably a good gamble to fix up and commute with!
Best Beater
Bought it for $50 from a guy moving out of state, and put a $20 turn signal switch in it. For almost 4 years i have been shifting gears at 5500 RPM, hiting 100+ MPH, hitting deer (not intentionally) and jumping things. I have put off-road lights on the hood and roof. It will not die and i have beaten it mercilessly. It gets 27 MPG at 75 MPH. Surprisingly roomy (i'm 6'2".) No rust.
terrific vehicle
Bought this mercury new in 1992, has never left us down, maintenence has been unbelievable small compared to the 1999 dodge durango we also bought new. Our mercury bills probably total $500.00 From 1992 till present, the durango already exceeds $4,000.Oo!!!! Topaz is very comfortable to drive, very nice dependable family car. The body still looks brand new after all these years and is not garage kept!
I Love My Lil' Mercury Topaz!
I bought this car at the begining of March, and all I have had to do was get an oil change, front end alignment and some new tires. Everything else is pretty spiffy. It's a '93 and it only had 112,xxx original miles on it. It's also super reliable I've driven it from Washington through Oregon, Idaho, and Utah then back an had no problem whatsoever and that was a 3,000 mile trip.
Topaz
This car is the most exciting car that a man/woman can drive. It's handling is good and inerior and exterior is strong, and you know when you drive it you dont have to have any worries.
We love this car
We bought this automobile new in 1991, We love it. It's dependable and comfortable for two to four people. Great gas mileage. Other than routine maintenance and normal wear and tear, we've had no further repairs, etc. This is the 4th Mercury that we've bought, approximately one every ten to twelve years. We are sold on Mercury products.
my ride
this has been an excellant vehicle, the only major repair i have had to do is a front wheel bearing at 120000miles
Too much work but run's like a champ!
Well when I first got it I had to get a new water pump. The fan didn't work an the passenger door doesn't open from outside. The front window leaks in the corner. And the air conditioner doesn't work through the vents. I got a cracked head and got it back like six months later. Then I had to get a new starter and radiator, a new fan and I have had some fuel pumps. I put three on in one year. But here lately it's been getting me back and forth to work and it's got a good stereo system in it. But it's been a rough journey In the last year. But it had 40 some odd thousand miles on it. Now it's got 80 something on it and rust pretty bad. But what can I say gets me from point A to point B running like a champ.
Tom's Topaz
A great car for a teen like myself. I haven't had any major problems with it, at least not caused by myself. When driven conservatively, it gets well over its rated fuel efficiencies. Not a bad interior.
good car when taken care of
The alternator the air conditioning system and the fuel pump went out of this car but it has paid for itself many times i bet i get 200k out of it
Topaz
I bought the car for $300.00. It's a practical car for ages 16-60. And the parts are easy to find as well as cheap
Worst Car ever
DO NOT buy an old mercury topaz, they always break down and repairs are worth more than the car itself, even if you do it yourself, do not buy this car, very unreliable, and it will stab you in the back
good hand me down
This was my first car, I paid my grandparents 500 dollars for it and I have done most the work myself for an 18 year old car not much should be expected. It starts up first try everytime and right now its missing on one cylinder and I cant figure out why but if it weren't for that it would be getting better mileage, but in never got over 22, the 3 speed automatic has no overdrive and if you go over 65 you can almost see the needle go down, the only stuff that has been done to this car is minor stuff that has to be done to every car. This is a good car for college students cheap, and reliable within reason, you aren't buying it for its looks are you? didn't think so
good & reliable
I have owned this vehicle for about 8 months now and the car runs really well.
I'll cry if it ever dies
Bought new in '92 for about $8500, 136k mi. 27-30mpg, a/c retired 2yrs ago, severe hail damage, has rust and clearcoat is peeling, but I will be putting a new set of tires on it soon so I can drive it a few more years. Other than routine maintenance includes 1 clutch , 2 water pumps, 2 radiators, struts, 2 sets of tie rod ends. I would buy a new one today if they were still being made. Best auto buy I have ever made.
More powerfull than you thought
This is a better car than other people think it is. The Topaz/Tempo carries a bad reputation of a car for old people, but I am 19 and I can tell you that this car kicks ass ;). Whith 160 lbs of torque and 140 hp, and her 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in 7.8 sec, this V6 will humiliate most of the people who dare to challenge you! This car runs smooth and only have minor problems like drinking a lot of gas!!! (about 13 liters for 100 km!) Overall, this car is fun to drive, and powerfull! (not the automatic though!!!!). It runs smoothly without any major problems (mine has 176 000 km with no major problem).
topaz's rule
i love topaz's they are the best cars made
fantasitique car
I bought in 2000,it has 290000 kilo, now it has 325000kilo,it still works very good ,I spend maxime 500 cad for reperation in 3 years in montreal,it is a fantasitique car ! I think it will run to 400000 kilo.
Topaz troubles
My time with this vehicle was rough. It was relatively old when i bought it but the mileage was low. Despite the low mileage there were many problems. The muffler needed to be replaced as well as struts, starter, serpentine belt, as well as a rusted bottom of vehicle. The interior was accebtable and somewhat comfortable. Also the automatic rear door locks failed and the driver side window did not go down.
Made it to half a million mileage mark
I love my topaz it had the basic repairs, and I drove it till it hit a half Million. It was tired, it needed new engine and transmission. If I could find another I would buy it .

I love this car!!!!!!!!
Wel, what else is there to say? I just traded my 1991 Toyota Corolla DX for this car, and am I pleased! I have never been much of a Ford/Mercury man, but this car has changed my way of thinking. I love the way it runs, and it handles just about as nice as my parent's luxury car. This car is deffinitely a keeper!
Good cheap car
My Topaz has been passed from about 3 family members and now has 125,000 miles and is still surprisingly going. That's just a simple, no frills, inexpensive way to commute.
passenger side hub/bearing
The passenger side hub/bearing failed at 60,000 miles. Bought new one for $78 and had pressed on steering knuckle for $25. Found ball joint bad and replaced control/arm ball joint assembly. Cost me $47 for part and did myself with above. Had fuel injection regulator go bad at 44,000 miles. Bought and replaced one for cheap. Bought fuel injection pressure gauge to diagnose problem. Engine and trans seem okay. Got the car from my aunt in December 2001 with 42,000 miles on it. Also had to replace water pump.
Worst I've ever owned
I'm tired of throwing $ into this hunk of junk. It is these kinds of cars that lead to the decline of the U.S. auto industry. Water pump went out at 60 K. Tie rod replaced at 65 K as well as needing a new balancer which requires dropping the engine enough to replace it. Fan overloaded the computer which lead to the fan not working, therefore the radiator blew. Fan, computer & radiator $450. Power window regulator gears in front doors shot and needed replaced. Last but not least, the AC pump seal shot. I will not fix this as it is about a $900 repair; which is the blue book of the car. All of this before 76,000 miles. Fix or Repair Daily. You better believe it.
Classic piece of junk
This is probably one of the worst cars on the road. It's been full of maintenance problems and leaks. Currently the entire floor is rusting out (there are some big holes) yet the body has no rust, go figure.
4 dr GS Sedan
I got this car for a day runner....Lasted all of 6 months, and we had to send it to car-heaven. Ran strong and smooth while I had it. Simple tune up stuff, I had to replace the exhaust, but that easy easy. A good buy for a first car, that's bout it.
One very well built car
This is a very good car for anyone looking for an inexpensive used car. I had one for 8 years, and it was running extremely well with 250,000 miles when I was rear ended by a semi in it. The car held up better in a severe car crash than any of the newer smaller imports ever would have. This car is extremely well made! Exceptionally safe. It has a ton of room, it's very comfortable to drive, and if you get the manual transmission, very fun to drive with great gas millege.
Changed too many parts
I changed windshield, whole front suspension, back springs, battery, radiator, water pump, rear bumper, all window motors bad. I need to change the transmission but too expensive.
Two ton paper weight
Probably the most reliable part of this vehicle is that I can almost always rely on a warning light turning on while I'm driving it. The 3-speed automatic is very jerky and doesn't always want to shift out of first and it is terrible on gas mileage. I average 19 mpg, which is worse than some high end sports cars. The interior is falling apart, the plastic components on the exterior have fallen clean off the car on a couple occasions. Within the first month of ownership both power seat belts failed and the front end electrics failed. These cars are also notorious for their starter problems. This is the worst car I have ever owned, I really should have bought a Honda.
