So far it's been a joy!

Having owned my 50th anniversary Range Rover for 5 months and about 5,000 miles, I can't say how pleased I am so far. It's a joy to drive, rides like you're riding on air, and has given me absolutely no problems. I expected the worst after reading about all the problems Land Rovers have but can say that this vehicle is the most capable, fun car I've owned and I've owned everything from a 300ZX to an Infiniti. You feel like a king driving the Range Rover and the visibility is second to none. The only thing I don't like is the fuel economy, but is to be expected for such a heavy duty truck.

Beside the electrical problems, and other odds & ends, the truck is fun to drive. The key is have a good mechanic, the one I use has a graveyard of dead land rovers to pick parts from. Also I was recently in an accident (rear ended) and all I can say is you should see the other guy.

Solid and basically reliable

I have owned many British cars -- including a Rolls and a couple Jags -- and I was used to unworldly service bills but with 112,000 miles on the odometer, this truck has been reliable. I have the 225hp 4.6 liter model. Truck has never let me down. I off road it a few times a year, pull a trailer (2000 lbs), fill up a roof rack and have screaming pre-teens in the back. Very few creaks and rattles! Short girlfriend really likes the air suspension, which can "kneel" to allow convenient access. I have not found service costs to be unreasonably high or extraordinarily frequent.

This is my daily driver to and from home and school through city streets and the occasional bad traffic. Out of town trips are pleasant for as long as you check the hoses and water level so that overheating wont be a problem. changed suspension to Bilstein heavy duty shocks after the air stanchions gave way. Overhaul the engine every 35k Mi.. it makes a big difference. front windows come off alignment after a while which cause them to fall into the doors. I've already changed the climate control to Sanden AC. Carpeting has also given way and needs to be reupholstered after 30k Mi. Change oil once a year (Mobil 1 synthetic for warm climates)

owned for six years. It's been towed probably a dozen times with various different failures. Stranded me late at night or along the freeway at the most inoportune times. Very unreliable. Cupholders poorly placed..will not hold onto a beverage can around sharp turns. The seatbelts in the back are poor (one even broke). Difficult with child car seats. On a positive side, the leather has stayed very nice and it seems almost resistant to door dings (only one in 6 years)

My 1998 Range Rover is the perfect car for me. When you think performance you cannot think about handling because it can be alittle sluggish. However that sluggish ride is made up for by the vehicles incredible comfort. When you think performance for this vehicle you absoultely must think of limitless terrain that you can navigate through in this SUV. This vehicle is comfortable, it has an incredible sound system, it filters the air outside before it comes inside, it goed up and down by the push of a button, and is built like a tank. You cannot beat the quality of this car, and most importantly you cannot get more luxury for the money! It is an excellent value!

I've owned several Land Rover's and the 97 4.6L HSE is without a doubt the most comfortable vehicle to drive in especially on long trips. I would highly recommend any Land Rover product to anyone looking for a unique and extremely comfortable vehicle.

Traded my '98 4.6 after one year

I owned a '98 RR 4.6 (that I bought used w/36K miles on it) for one year. Gas mileage was awful--about 12 mpg. And about 6 months after I bought the RR, things started to go wrong. Nothing major, just the A/C control, two stereos, the sunroof, etc. There was a 2 month time period wherin the truck was taken for one repair or another at least once a week! I was without a stereo for most of that 2 months. And the 36,000 mile service cost me $1000. I traded the RR in 6 months before the warranty expired--by then I was just too apprehensive about owning a Land Rover w/o a warranty. Oh, & did I mention the high depreciation of Land Rovers?

I hate the reliability of this truck. it breaks down often & repair prices are ridiculous. When this truck breaks down, the repair is $2,000.00 on average. this truck has parts in it that no other truck has & they all break down. I put $10,000.00 into this truck in one year. the blue book value has plummetted. i can't believe this truck was once $69,000.00. NEVER BUY THIS TRUCK OR YOU WILL PAY THE PRICE.

I have had my RR for 8 years. I really love the styling and look of the car. When running it's a fantastic car to drive and very comfortable. Problems have been numerous and a typical trip to the dealer is $1000+. Have replaced my air suspension system, car ran hot on me so I replaced the radiator, had to have my head gasket replaced ($9k) from running hot, heater core replaced twice. I typically keep a close eye on it and oil change regularly. It's a joy to drive if you have the $$'s to dish out or find a good cheaper mechanic.

I love this car!!! I have always owned BMW's and swore that was all I would ever drive. My husband bought this car when I got pregnant because it was big and safe and he had always wanted one.He thought after a couple months I would give it to him and get something else.I won't give it up. It is very fun to drive and I love how high you sit up and you can see everything. His Tahoe has horrible blind spots. It is more comfortable to sit in for long trips than his bigger Tahoe. Repair bills are comparable to other luxury vehicles, it is not a Ford and will cost more to fix. That's why it's luxury. The only drawback is it is a little slow on pick up but its not a sports car either.

I've spent about 10 years in Europe during which time I drove predominantly 5 series BMW and Mercedes, Audi V8 quattro and the occasional Volkswagen Corrado. My driving consisted of autobahn and mountain switchback driving. Even in this context, my Rover 4.6 HSE stands toe to toe with any vehicle I've driven to date. It corners like a performance sedan, excelerates effortlessly (even from 60 - 90+) without the engine roar typical of most cars, stops on a dime, is luxuriously comfortable, quiet and well laid out. It would be nice to have better gas mileage but, one shouldn't expect to feed a lion on hamburger helper.

Always dreamed of owning a Range Rover. Finally plucked up the courage to buy one in 2005 and after extensive research and product comparison found a one owner low mileage one at a local premier car dealer ship. I must say the after glow of owning my first "luxury" SUV began to dim very soon after we took delivery. Silly things started to go wrong almost immediately. Heated seats stopped working, sway arm needed replacing early on (causing an alarming feature called "wheel wobble"), small coolant pipe perished causing leakage, mega bucks to replace, many many air suspension faults, remote central locking system troublesome, sun roof broke itself! (big money to repair) that was the final straw.

I commute in the vehicle on the freeway, and love the height and visibility that I have. The Rover manuvers well on the open road, but pick up can be a problem. Sluggish going up hills. Does well on dirt mountain roads in rain and snow. The AWD is a plus. The cost of driving the car, from gas to repairs to replacement parts is very high. In my 30+ years of driving, I've never had to have my car towed in for repair until my Rover...it's been towed twice. With this vehicle, you must find a reliable, knowledgeable repair facility. This is difficult, even in an urban setting.

We sold our Toyota land cruiser, and brought a second hand Rover from the UK, we have had her for two months and she has already left us on the side of the road for 7 hours, and here in Africa thats no joke! 4X4 is great, on sand and rocks, comfort and power hard to match, yet i feel her reliability is very poor, i do loads of off roading even when on roads and for a change i dont have a sore back but im left tense any way at the thought of even making it to our destination.....any sugestion on up spares or things we can twig to help her cope here in summer eg: her cooling system! as it was our water pump bearing that collapsed and nearly sent our fan crashing into out radiator, in Africa!!

Admittedly one of the most refined and capable luxury SUVs made...when it's not in the shop. Most common trouble spot is the air suspension system, which will leave you stranded when it fails. The complex electrical system is British...not high in the reliability category. Don't expect much warmth from the heated seats, if they're even working. They're prone to early failure. Make sure that you do not own this vehicle without a warranty as the average trip to the shop is in excess of $1,000, not including a rental car and flatbed.

Long Time 1998 Range Rover Owner

I have had my 1998 Range Rover since new. Problems early-on were numerous, but after changing out the failed air suspension system to a manual one several years ago, this has been a great vehicle to own. It now has just over 100,000 miles 20 years out, and is no longer a daily driver, but gets annual trips totaling 2000 miles or more. New headliner last year, replacement climate control unit this year (now inexpensively available rebuilt). Bottom line, at this point it is truly a classic that retains its iconic looks and great SUV/off-road/snow-performance ability.

I bought my Range Rover with 190,000 miles on it. I am a mechanic and am in awe of the craftsmanship in this vehicle. Equiped to hand exstreme conditions will you are in comfort. Plus you drive out of the wood onto the road and never miss out on an exceptional ride. I drive it in 30" rivers and up 45 degree inclines with ease, drive on 4wheeler trails and watch the looks on others face with amazement. A lot of fun in the woods.

I have grown to be very disappointed in this vehicle, because its has been a constant struggle to keep the engine light off, air condition continues to not work properly and last but not least I had to have regular shocks installed due the air suspension going out aleast 3 times within the first year of having it. I guess I would say that Land Rover needs to invest more money into their mechanics training, because their truly not get it done correctly. I think I will never invest so much time and money in Range Rover ever again. This was my first and problably the last that I will ever own.

I bought this car two years old with 32,000 miles costing $ 34,000 down from $ 65,000 new. Thought I had a bargain. Gas cost a lot less back then and repair costs have ballooned. Radio broke, Air Suspension failed twice, head gasket leaking for years etc. Comfortable, spacious car but worst for repair and cost I've ever owned.

This has been a terrific SUV for three years. It is a '98 and still gets compliments. The only downside is it doesn't have great acceleration, but then again that's not why you buy a Rover. I've only had to do standard maintanence. Much less troublesome that I was planning on. Would make the same buy decision again.

The 4.0 and 4.6's are beautiful cars, with a sleek exterior, and an interior quality and style that is unmatched by any other SUV. However, The 4.0's are slightly underpowered, and even the 4.6's cannot match some of the competition. While some have criticized Range Rover for mechanical issues, the 4.0/4.6 series seems to have most issues rectified. These are solid, reliable vehicles.

This car has really grown on me. Nothing offers such a great view of the road as a Range Rover. I thought I liked the classic for its ride comfort, but the extra push of th 4.6 makes such a difference. The EAS is a great feature and I use it much more than I thought I would. I have looked at just about every suv including the new 2003 and can anything really compare to this truck? I am going to keep this one a long time.

I bought new a '98 4.0. Very comfortable and easy to drive. Pulling power is astonishing for only 190HP. I have had a brake job ($1200) @ 40,000 miles - 2 new stereos, a fan bearing fail causing the fan to explode and create a large dent in the bonnet. Out of warranty now (78,000 mi.) and CD changer acting up, noisy air suspension motor. Other than these item, I have been happy with my Rover. I am dissapointed with the accelerated depreciaton. Looking to trade for maybe a '01 740iL.

The 1997 Range Rover 4.6 HSE Kensington Edition - Land Rover is unsurpassed for their unbeatable crafting of excellent veicles. The 97 Range Rover is no exception. I have owned this veicle for a year now (my first car), and its fantastic! The only thing I had to fix was an airbag, and the sunroof. It has a little over 100,000 on it. I maintain my own Rover. For the DIY owner (Or an independent LR shop if you wish)its quite resonable to fix. If you own more than one land rover - buy reasonable diagnosic software, to help you out with electronics - as it does have it quoter! As for fuel ecominy - what do you expect! Fuels not at $5 yet, so big deal! Wow what an excellent veicle.....

We purchased this vehicle 1998 model HSE with 72k. It was a choice of the ML320 or HSE, The HSE is a far better equiped and road competent vehicle. I love the road manners and the off road ability. The Seating is exceptional. The stereo had some problems, the tire are not readily available at you local tire distributor or BJ's. Overall the vehicle is fine. We have a 1992 range that I am rebuilding the transmission with 140k. Range Rover for ever and ever.. sounds like a rap!!
