Used 1997 Jeep Cherokee Consumer Reviews
Timelessly Classic!
I own a 1997 Cherokee with the 4.0 I6 and 5 Speed Manual. I Bought it sight unseen with 63,000 miles on it for $6,000 and drove it 3,000 miles from Brooklyn, NY to home in Salt Lake City in 2 days in 2018. I bought the car to ultimately drive it from Salt Lake City to Deadhorse, Alaska and back again in 10 days, an 8,000 mile trip, 800 miles a day totaling 150 hours of driving. Prior to, I replaced all the aged and badly rusted suspension, axle, and driveline components. Then replaced all external moving and non-moving accessories to the short block motor; $6,000 in preventative maintenance and upgrades including front Eaton E-locker and rear Trac-Lok. I had to trust this baby with my life! It was early April 2019 en route on the Alaska Highway and then the Dalton Highway, below zero, and 1,000 miles was unpaved highway with no services including cell service. The XJ never let me down. I’ve taken the Jeep on intense trails at Moab, driven it on other 2,000 mile road trips to Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Idaho. I love this Jeep. I usually drive it over my 6.4L Challenger, 5.7L Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, and my F-250. The XJ has a few electrical nuisances with the locks, but it’s 24 years old! Starts like a champ. Goes 80 mph like a champ. Lots of torque. I can achieve up to 24 mpg on the freeway with no headwind, in the summer. On 8,000 mile Alaska trip i calculated exactly 20.5 mpg with winter fuel in freezing temps. Fun awesome SUV.
