Great car for the money.

I now have approximately 28,000 miles on the car. My only complaint is the way the transmission is overly programmed for gas mileage. When the trans. upshifts, the rpm's drop down too much and you lose the torque. If you shift manually the rpm's do not drop so much. Also, when you go to downshift, say to pass another car, you have to depress the gas pedal a lot and this usually causes the trans. to downshift at least two gears. When I go to pass, I use the manual mode which, again, works much better. All in all, a great little car, especially when you factor in the cost and what you get for the money. I would definitely buy another Elantra.

Middle of the Pack

I bought this car as a certified used car in 2015. At the time it was about a year old and had around 28,000 miles on it. Almost 2 years later and I now have about 93,000 miles on it. Let's just say I drive a lot. Now let's get to the review. There are some good and bad things about this car. Let's start with the good. Overall cost is ok. You can get the SE model for less than 20k or so. Mine was a year old like I said and I got it for around $17,000. The biggest selling points to me was the warranty, decent styling and MPGs. So far, those things have held up. I drive about 60% hwy and 40% city everyday and have about a 100 mile daily roundtrip commute. With this type of usage, I average 35 mpg which is pretty good. I have been on some road trips where it was all hwy and I can easily get 40 mpg while still driving 75-80. There have been times where I was stuck on 60 mph roads for hours and I would actually get about 45 mpg. Really good! Sadly, the tank is only like 12 gallons or something really small so even if I do really well on fuel mileage, I still have to refuel a lot more often than I would like. Now the bad: Thankfully I had that warranty. It needed a engine replacement at around 40,000 miles due to a valve losing pressure. So far the 2nd engine has held up fine. Other than that (big thing) no other repairs have been needed. The brakes feel fine when it is dry out but when it rains, they constantly have a grinding noise/sensation when applying them. The car also easily hydroplains so I have to really slow down when it's wet out. The seats get pretty uncomfortable after a few hours. Road noise is horrible. And the worst part of it all is the resale value. I understand that I drive a lot of miles. But the value has plummeted on this car in the last few years way faster than I expected. Even when I check the value as if I had a normal amount of miles, it still has dropped significantly. I have made many extra payments on top of my regular ones for 2 years now and I still am about $5000 below what I owe on the loan. No other vehicle I have ever had has dropped in value so quickly. I am definitely stuck with this car until I pay at least 90% of it off.

Amazing Car

This is a solid car by a solid company. I am constantly amazed by how well thought out all the features are and the high quality of workmanship. I used to rent plenty of Hyundai cars when I traveled for work, and now that I spend more time doing a standard commute, I am absolutely delighted by the fully loaded options. You simply cannot go wrong with the leather interiors and technology options crammed into this car.

A Poor Man's Mini Cooper S

Denny, 03/18/2017
2014 Hyundai Elantra Sport 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 6A)

First of all it's not a Mini Cooper S, but since I recently owned a 2011 Mini Cooper S, I can see the similarities. You can tell it's a solid car when you shut the door. The cabin has the cockpit feel with the close at hand controls and push start function. I feel like I'm folded into the car when I shut the door and start it up. The steering is tight and responsive. When it's not in eco mode, it's got good pickup both from a start and in traffic. It's performs fine in eco mode, but there's a difference. It also has the sports car ride, which means it's great on good roads and lets you know all of the features of the road on not so good ones (I like that, but to each his own). Now, the story of the car. I bought it used two weeks ago in Cincinnati and drove it back to North Carolina. I got 33.7 mpg on the drive, using a calculator. It was actually pretty close to the car readout of 34.0, but I never trust the car and smartphones with calculators make it easy to verify. I was actually getting better mileage until the mountains of West Virginia, so I expect 35 mpg on flatter highways. I have already put about 900 miles on it. In mostly city driving, I got 29.5 mpg and in mixed got 32.5 mpg. On the drive back from Cincinatti, I also had the sunroof open with the seat heaters on in 30 degree weather for 50 miles and never got cold. The wind noise was minimal also. The bluetooth works great with my iphone, the car is comfortable, and I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I can't comment yet on reliability, having only owned it for two weeks, but it is Hyundai certified pre-owned, so there's that comfort as I own it. My only complaints are the fact that it has no spare tire, only a repair kit, and the driver's side blind spot is definitely there. It does have a double outside mirror for the blind spot, so that probably won't be an issue when I get used to it.

I bought this car in 2014 with every accessory available. MPG has averaged 32.2 in city driving. Paint has held up well and so has the interior. Still looks brand new inside and out!! Miss my SUV so will be replacing this car with the 2016 Kia Sorento.

I bought my Elantra brand new in 2014, got extended warranty. Had to replace shock first year , then the vehicle was good up until one week ago January 2022. I heard a ticking in motor took it to my mechanic, who told me to call hyundai to see if still under warranty and if they would do anything for me and answer was no not under warranty so would be at my cost . My engine has only 10600 km on it paid 30000 dollars . The engine is no good and I will not pay hyundai to put new one in to see it go. Hyundai has known for some time that ,small pieces of metal are getting into oil, they refused to help in any way, 30000 dollars they recieved for a vehicle that was no good Hyundai should be ashamed , another large corporation ripping off the little people, I own an older honda now and will NEVER BUY NEW AGAIN AND ESPECIALLY NOT A HYUNDAY

Definitely glad I sprung for the sport

I’ve now owned my 14 Elantra sport for 4.5 years and have 53,000 miles on it. When I was first shopping around I looked at the limited and couldn’t stand the 1.8l engine. After seeing a few other reviews on here I’m glad I purchased the sport with the much better engine. When not in eco mode I average 30-32mpg combined and still have that oomph when accelerating. The sport tuned steering is incredible and it truly feels like I’m driving a much more expensive sporty car than what I paid for it. The seats and interior are more comfortable than any car I’ve previously owned and while it is small by today’s standards the touch screen display is good. I can’t stand the styling of the latest models. The 2014 had the most aggressive and appealing exterior and interior styling. The only two complaints I have is the cheap sunglasses holder and that since I bought the car, in cold starts it’s a hard first shift from 1st to second gear. After I’m a half mile down the road no problems whatsoever. Dealer said there was nothing wrong with the transmission so I’ve lived with it since. The sunglasses holder has a cheap clip in it that has since been recalled. Even the slightest of bumps opened it. After 3 trips to the dealer they finally replaced the front roof console and the problem has since gone away. Overall, I’m very happy with the car. I paid 21,000 for it and you just can’t get the value here in anything else at that price. I understand if others think differently who bought the 1.8l engine. The drivability and handling are the best parts about the sport.

This is our second Elantra. Our daughter was involves in a T-Bone collision in the first. The other vehicle was an SUV, and both were totaled. She walked away without a scratch. I went right out and bought another one.

POOR gas mileage and dash computer lies

SEE August 2021 update The car is rated 38 Highway, 28 City and 32 Combined. I didn't expect to get the actual ratings, but I did expect to be closer than 30% lower than posted. My salesman assured me that they were accurate after the preceding model years had a problem with mileage claims. I only average 24-25 mpg with 30% highway mileage. It takes 80% or more highway just to get close to the posted average. After numerous complaints and a road test, highway and rural roads coming back, by the service manager of the dealership, my results were verified. Hyundai still refused to do anything. After complaining to the BBB they finally sent an engineer out to check the car. Despite asking to meet with him and ride along, they did not let me. He took the car "highway only" and achieved 40 mpg which was very good, and used it as an excuse to say there is nothing wrong with the car. They also would not give me the protocol for their city tests. I did take a trip the next week, filled up just before entering the highway and then again as I got back home. I was able to duplicate his 40 mpg with the cruise control set at 65 on a 70 mph limit highway for 200 miles. That is great, but immediately when my suburban driving is included I drop to the 24-25 mpg average. If I drive nothing but local suburban roads for several days, the computer on the dash will often be at 20 mpg or lower. I would have been satisfied if I averaged the city rating, but gas mileage was one of the primary reasons I purchased this car. If actual usage is completely off the target, I feel it is false advertising. I am 66 years old and don't have a lead foot. I live in a suburban area and avoid driving in rush hour when possible. I also use cruise control even when I am only going 4 or 5 miles down the highway. FEB 2018 24,000 miles: Gas mileage remains the same. 40% to 50% highway still results in 24-25mpg. I need to get near 80% highway just to get the CITY rating of 28 mpg and computer still inflates mileage by about 10%. Driving only in suburbs where I live nets about 15-17mpg. After 4 years and 27,000 miles, nothing has changed. I would still like to see their protocol for mileage tests, especially the city rating of 28 mpg. I still average 24-25 mpg with the cars computer consistently showing 2-3 mpg/ 8-12% higher. It is not an estimate as that would require it to be high half the time and low half the time. I have come to believe it is purposely set to show higher than achieved mileage to mislead owners and reduce complaints. I really wonder how many actually calculate their mileage. Two other problems I have repeatedly told the service advisers about is the ticking of the engine when cold since new; and trunk seems to open on it's own. I have even purchased a silicone cover for my key fob which has reduced the problem, but it still occurs. I have also seen other Elantras with open trunks in parking lots and my neighbors Kia twin has had the trunk lid open a couple times. 2019 and coming up on 5th anniversary of purchase. No changes in mileage. Had to replace first set of tires at just 22,000 miles, but there is no mileage warranty on original equipment tires. 2nd set down to about 40% of tread now. Now at over 40,000 with all highway and fuel mileage recorded. Still only average 24-25 mpg. At about 80% highway I can achieve the EPA city rating. AUGUST 2021 UPDATE . . . NO changes in fuel mileage, but after going to a different dealer for service and telling them about the tapping noise, they actually checked it out instead of dismissing it like the original dealer. It was piston slap! Since I had done all the oil changes and they had a record of them, they replaced the engine at no cost!!! I am only on my second tank of gas, but still only getting about 24 MPG with 30-40% highway miles. Car has 48,000 miles on it now. Going to the dealer for oil changes is well worth the extra time and money in this case!! Hyundai finally acknowledged piston slap and replaced my engine at 47,000 miles. Thank God I had my oil changed at the dealership. Still same poor mileage compared to EPA only averaging 25mpg. Still also having problems with trunk opening despite having a cover on my key fob. I think this is a problem with Kia and Hyundai since I have seen trunk lids up on both in parking lots. 9 Mar 2023 Mileage is still the same. overall average of 24-25mpg tank after tank. I also still have problems with the trunk lid opening on it's own. Hyundai finally did hear my knocking noise and replace my engine under warranty though. Thank God I had my oil changes done at the dealership. They can be very picky about having the oil changed regularly. Engine replaced by Hyundai at about 47,000 miles due to knock (piston slap) that I had complained about on my 1st oil change. I went to a different dealer this time and they agreed. Thank God I had all my oil changes done at Hyundai. Sadly, it didn't help the gas mileage. I am still averaging 24.6 mpg in a car that is supposed to average 32 epa. Having spent most of my working life in the car business, I didn't expect 32, but 30% less still seems a bit bad. City is supposed to be 28. If I averaged that I would have been satisfied. My previous car, a 2001 Corolla with 250,000 miles and oil leaking past rings fouling my #1 plug regularly, I was getting 23 mpg. STill have a problem with trunk opening accidentally too, and I have seen a few in parking lots with the same problem. Hyundai and Kia. Silycone boots to cover my fobs have helped a little, but still have deck lid open without intention several times each month.
