Bought used, don't do that! 65K warranty used for transmission at 32K. Out of warranty transmission replaced at 82K. Owned 3 years with 6 breakdowns requiring towing. I have never had this much trouble with any other car. Rapid loss of value. Intermittent poor shifting even after dealer service. I can't recommend this car in any way.

Dealers are rip-offs

KK, 02/22/2007

Previously, I wrote my review about the transmission braking at 69,000 miles and the dealer said they won't honor the warranty because the transmission wasn't flushed. I went to AAMC for a replacement and paid $2800. I wrote a letter to Hyundai Corp. telling them what happened. I received a call from the corp. office. After I sent all the documentation to prove I still owned the car and the receipt from AAMCO, I received a check for the full amount I paid for the transmission. I found that it's not the Hyundai Manufacturer, it's the DEALER that rips people off. If you have any problems, go directly to the manufacter not the dealer!

Hyundai warranty is a joke!!

At 69,000 miles, the transmission broke. They wouldn't pay for it, because, changing the fluid twice was not enough. Since I didn't also have it flushed, they won't pay for the repair! AAMCO repaired it for $2600 and assured me it had nothing to do with flushing. It was a part that went bad and he see it all the time because it's the kind of transmission they use. Also,I had the dealer check my brakes a couple of time and they said they're ok. Then a few months later tell me the whole cylinders were broke and they won't pay for it because it's neglect!! Hyundai does not honor their warranty! I'll never buy a Hyundai again!

I honestly don't understand all these reviews. I guess their previous owners didn't take care of their little Hyundai because my car runs great and is in great shape. The transmission and engine runs great. I don't understand the comments on the handling. The brakes could be better, but they have no problem. People need to realize that Hyundai was still not a very large company when the 2000-2004 Accents came out. And the Accent was Hyundai's least expensive car. The interior scratches easily and the paint gets dings and scratches easily as well. But this was meant to be a realible INEXPENSIVE car for people that want a decent car and have money to put gas in it too. =]

GET THE TRANSMISSION SERVICED!

Bought this car with 12K mi on it, ran great the first year. Then the little check engine lights, about 4 times into the shop for "sensors". Always had the oil changed at 3000k and air filter, but never the "recommended service", i.e. trans flushing at 30K mi. Never had done that with a car before until closer to 100K, and then just precautionary. Well...BUYER BEWARE...Yesterday at 54K miles, the car starting "revving" while changing gears (auto trans). Took to Hyundai dealer who immediately said it was internal transmission, but WOULD NOT be covered by warranty since it hadn't had "recommended service". WHAT TRANS GOES OUT AT 54K MILES? So much for the "best warranty". WHAT A JOKE!!!

I can honestly say that I have not ever had any engine or transmission problems it runs great! BUT everything is CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP that is on it! All 4 of my door handles are broken, it dents very easy, the radio only works when it wants too, just made very cheap. It would be great for a person just starting to drive but I am 25 with a baby and it is NOT a good family car at all!

Had car for under a year, replaced O2 sensor, brakes, battery and tires. Next year battery (only 1 kind available) O2 sensor. Next year, belts, water pump Brakes O2 Sensor. Every year I had to replace at least 1 of the O2 sensors, speed sensor and trans sensor of some sort (since year 3) None was covered as it is normal wear and tear (!@#$). Gas pedal stuck after 5 years and now my trans is failing. Will never buy again, bad warranty, bad price and cheap, cheap car (not in price just in quality)

As a Honda guy i wasnt very fond of getting a Hyundai. Bought in 2011 with 163000 and boy am i glad i did. Gets me 39mpg all highway. I drive it about 50 miles daily. I have the 4 door with the 1.6L auto. Mine does have a small noise in muffler but mechanic told me this was common on that year. Plus i dont mind cause it sounds cool, lol! Great car! Parts are easy to find and cheap. I recommend it!

My Accent GL, whcich has come to be known as "Meghan," is an excellent value. One of the few cars I could afford at 16, the fuel efficiency and reliability have proven extremely sanctuous for my wallet. The car is fun to drive, great on long trips, and does not stick out to state troopers so you can speed all you like (passed one at 20 +; idiot in Hummer was distracting cop).

This was my first car and I'm not happy with it. 1st year was okay but after that all down hill. Check engine light keeps coming on after car has been worked on. Back seat is cramped. Warranty would be good but the only dealership that is close to me does horrible work if any at all. Gas mileage is great when car doesn't over rev before I even shift it out of park. Handling is okay as long as the road is not wet. Car tends to fishtail on any road with more than a few drops of water on it. The breaks squeak like crazy when it rains and after it rains. And forget about decent pick up. Also for some reason the performance of the car plummets when AC is on.

We enjoyed every mile we spent on the road with this small car. We are a family of four, and our 5ft. 7in. tall teenagers were very confortable on the back seat. We travelled 200 miles every winter week-end to our country home and to ski areas. Highway, icy winding mountain roads, bumpy dirt roads, it handled everything nicely. No windnoise or rattles, even at high speeds. Althought the trunk is on the small side, it took all of our gear with no problems. Unfortunately, it was stolen from our driveway a few weeks ago. We really miss it...

If you talk the dealer down, you can buy a new one of these for around 11,500 with Auto Trans. WIth being a little car, this thing can get moving when it needs to. The interior is fairly basic, and compact. I am 6'1" and it was ok sizewise. All Hyundais come with a 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. If something goes wrong, you take it in. But car reliability also depends on the driver. This is no sports car, so don't drive it like one and it will last.

This is a great little car. It is my first car (I bought it new when I was 16), i've had it for almost three years now and I have never had any problems with it. If you are looking for a car that gets great gas mileage, is fun to drive, and can seat four people comfortably... This is it! This car has everything that you need and surprisingly a lot of stuff that you would want. Have I mentioned the gas mileage... On long trips i've gotten up to 40mpg!!! Amazing car...

We bought this as a inexpensive first new car. Overall, I had thought it was ok...until we owned it a while. MPG was about 27/29. Prior to this year we had to repair the door handle, the key broke off in the trunk, brakes twice and engine stabilizers once (regular maint). Then, as soon as we got to 108k, the tranny started to act up. $350 later we found out an overdrive part had broken off inside and demolished it. Cost to repair $2500. Guy said he had to do the same thing to his daughters 01 last year. So, if you think this car will go 100k+ or more than 5-7 years without major problems, think again. I know I will before considering Hyundai.

This vehicle was the biggest mistake ever! I've had nothing but mechanical problems; I'm constantly taking it in for warranty work. I paid $12,000 for the car, but it's only worth $2,900. The biggest problem is its losing $300 - $500 per month in value. So, I owe $8,000 on a car that is worth $3,000. I'm making $400/mo payments on a $200/mo note to pay it off before it's value drops to nothing and I'd have to PAY someone just take take it off my hands. I'm upside down 2 times over in a car that's 2 years old! The Hyundai Accent is the WORST vehicle I've ever known. DO NOT BUY ONE... THERE IS NOT ONE POSITIVE ASPECT ABOUT OWNING THIS VEHICLE.

I helped my mother pick out this car new in 2002 & she owned it for 5 yrs before generously giving it to me after my divorce left me a single mom without a vehicle. At the time she bought it I thought the warranty was great & the price was right and it seemed to have some get-up-and-go. But since I've owned it, I now see more clearly that it is a piece of junk. At 96K mi, it's now going through oil, the engine light is perpetually on and it won't pass emissions. Even without these obvious problems, in hilly western PA, I can't tell you how many times I've been terrified by the handling of this vehicle due to it's horrible steering and braking! I can't wait til I can afford a new car!

I inherited this Accent from my father with 36,900 miles on it. He bought it new. He had previously ONLY driven Toyota/Nissan. He has always raved about how flawless the Accent has been. I have since put 10,000 more miles on it in a span of 3 months and would like provide my experiences. I am 6'1" and find the front seats extremely comfortable and surprisingly roomy for the size of this car. Standard multi-adjustable seat with lumbar. Visibility is great all around (important in this size of car). I drove from Maryland to South Texas in 2 days with minimal discomfort and the car performed flawlessly. It can cruise at 70 mph+ all day long, literally, and return 35mpg doing it.

I've had the car for three months and it has performed flawlessly. It is very comfortable to drive, with good power and lots of features that are standard. I test drove a Honda Civic and Toyotta Corolla before I made my purchase, but neither beat the Elantra. This is a quality car, which for the price, people should run to buy.

This is a 5-speed A/T. Mileage to date is 22K. We purchased this car as new. The only major problem encountered so far was on the rear brakes (factory defect) when about 3K miles. Longest trip was from Georgia to Ohio (500+ miles) with 3 adults, 1 child, and lots of baggage. With a combine load of about 800lbs, we traveled for 8hrs, 60- 80mph on highways. Fastest trip was for 2hrs, 70-90mph with 2 adults and a child. Acceleration from traffic stops, uphill and passing is slow. Combine mpg is about 30. A/C, heater, steering, braking, controls are fine. Enough spaces for front seats but cramped for 3 at the back. Overall, pretty good economy car for lower end buyers and small family.

I owned 3 Honda Civics before trying out the Accent. "Pleasantly surprised" would be an understatement. I can't imagine a better car for the price. It's loaded with more features than I would have ever expected. It's really peppy and runs like a champ (so far!). The Hyundai warranty is what sold me...if they are willing to stand by their products, I was willing to give it a try. I'm glad I did. Terrific around town car and even good for longer hauls. A great 2nd family car (I have a Hyundai Santa Fe to do the real family hauling).

I purchased my 2002 Accent used in 2002 when it had just 5K miles on it. I use this car for getting around town -- typically short distances of 15 miles one way. I have driven it long distances but it is not a fun ride due to road noise, handling, and lack of cruise control. The car had a couple of mechanical problems around 30K miles (transmission and power windows on the driver and passenger sides) but the warranty covered all repair costs, and there have been no problems since. I'd buy this car again if I needed a very expensive, basic vehicle.

Got car used w/11k miles on it, have had nothing but problems with it.I don't know how many sensors this thing had but I think I have replaced them all. Also, transmission went at 77k mi after I brought it in several times for the same problem (over a couple of yrs), either that or the dealership got tired of trying to fix it, it was not covered by the warranty. Horrible to drive in the snow, it's like rubbing crisco on the tires then driving in the snow. I spent more time getting it fixed and money on this car (seemed to be something every 3 months)than what it was worth. Traded it in w/the check engine, brake & battery lights on got $1400 for it, though I would have paid them to take it.

The car ran great when I bought it in 2003. It had a relatively smooth ride, and could accelerate pretty fast. The problems started in 2006. First the RMPs would jump up pretty high when at a complete stop. I almost hit another car the 1st time it happened. I took it to the dealership, and they said I had voided my warranty by off roading. The most my car had seen of the wild was a gravel driveway. I took the car to a mechanic after that he looked at it and tried to fix the problem. I made it about 15 miles before it started again, but this time, I started hearing a loud metal banging metal noise. I called the mechanic back and they told me to bring it back ASAP, and not to drive it, but ha

There is a reason why Hyundai does not lease their vehicles. Simple reason - Hyundai cars depreciate so fast that you can feel the money being sucked out of your pocket. Why so much depreciation? Over the last 1 1/2 years and 120000 miles of owning this car, I have brought it into the shop over 8 times for different problems. Two problems will cost me when trade-in time comes, even though the problem was fixed. The last problem will cost me over $800, because the parts are not covered under the warranty.

I'm sorry for people that have gotten a poor quality Hyundai accent. I bouth this thing in Dec. 2001, ato commute and put almost 16000 miles a year. Now it has 81500 and still working. Just took it twice to the dealer to change the battery (at 5000) and then at 45000 miles to change the engine belts and check the front brakes, they did not do a good work on the front brakes. I'm planning to take it at 90000 to change the belts again and to fix the rear brakes. The reason I do not take it to the dealer is because this thing has never given any trouble, i do not like it and I'm not going to spend money on it.

Bought my Hyundai a couple of weeks ago. For the money, it's an excellent value, so far. You shouldn't be expecting a Porsche for ~$10K. It gets me around very well. Warranty service has been great so far. I had the check engine light come on the day I bought it. Got right into the dealership, found the gas cap sensor sensed the gas station attendant hadn't properly tightened the gas cap. My son wouls like more zip, but this keeps him out of trouble.

I was very surprised when I test drove my Accent. For being an inexpensive car, it had features that the more expensive cars have. I feel I got ripped off by the dealer, but that isn't a Hyundai problem, it's a dealer problem. I bought my car Sept 2001, so I have been driving it for 2 years now. I had to get a couple of minor repairs done and a new battery, but besides that, I have no problems with it and I'm very happy. I plan to buy another Hyundai for my next car.

Great Car for the Price

I had this car for about 4 months before it was totaled in an accident (thankfully not my fault). I drove it mainly on my commute to college, and had no problems while I drove it. I got about 30 mpg average. I'm about 6'2", so leg room is a big deal for me, but I never felt cramped in my Accent. In my accident I a man ran a red light in front of me, tearing up the whole front of the car. But I was completely unharmed even though the car was totaled. Overall I really liked my Accent and would recommend it to anyone, if not for the gas mileage, then for the safety.

The car is used as my commuter car. I drive 1/2 hr to work each day in it. i think I paid $8200 total (including TTL) and pay around $12 in gas a week. the car is cramped (I am 6'1) and the seat does not slide back enough for me. The radio also has a problem with keys sticking and being hard to press. The car runs well enough...although it has too much power for the light frame so the front tires peel out froms tops at times.

I am a college student, and I was able to afford this car on my own! I bought it used with 11K miles on it, and 8 months later my accent has 30K on it! Needless to say, I do a lot of long traveling in it, and its great! So far I haven't had any problems with it, and have only brought it to the garage for its scheduled maintenence. I didn't do a lot of shopping around... my dad has an elantra and has great luck with that, so I decided to go with a Hyundai, and this one was right in my price range! Its a great car!

It's like this - if you can afford a new Camry or an Altima, go buy it. But if you are a poor graduate student like me, and are thinking about getting a used sedan or a cheap new one like Accent, I'd put my money on the Accent any day of the year. Admittedley, it doesnt have the greatest pick up in the world, and the engine's a little nosy too, but a new 4-door sedan for about $11,000 is worth all these deficiencies. This car is making me so much happier compared to the used Toyota I had earlier. That one was making me take a trip to Midas every other month. This one hasnt given me any problem so far, and comes with a great warranty plan.

Comfortable for a medium built person, remarkably quiet within 60mph, has all basic stuff: AC, CD, power windows and mirrors, interior trim is well done. Took it on a 1600miles ride, performed well, 36mpg, however, becomes unstable and noisy at speeds above 65-70mph. The 1.6l engine manual provides good acceleration, one has no problems at all merging onto highway, around 30- 32mpg in suburban comuting. It does not excel in any regard, but everything is done right, one can not expect more from this type of entry level car. If the reliability improves for the new 2001-2002 model it is definitely a better choice than a 3-4y old Civic or Corolla.
