Great vehicle with a few minor issues

Andrew, Hummelstown, PA, 12/04/2018
2019 Honda Odyssey EX-L 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
This is my second Honda Odyssey EXL purchased in 15 months. My 2018 was totaled due to someone running a stop sign. So, I bought a 2019 a couple weeks ago. The vehicle has a superior ride and great gas mileage. However, both vehicles vibrate(d) at around 68-72 mph. The dealer claimed that they couldn't feel it with my 2018. I've learned to get used to it, but when the speed limit is … 70, I either have to go 67 or 73 mph to mitigate it. I have fourother minor complaints. First, there is no change storage. So I had to purchase a change purse to hold my change. Second, there is no compass. This is quite an irritant when the GPS says go southeast, etc., on a particular road from the start of a trip. Third, the temperature display is a tiny readout on the bottom of the odometer screen. My wife can't see it from the passenger seat and has to ask me every time she wants to know it. All Honda needs to do is provide both a compass and temperature readout on the huge computer screen where you can view many other apps. Fourth, the middle seats do not table or stay locked in their most forward position. Otherwise, it is a fantastic vehicle with great comfort and good gas mileage. My 2018 averaged 31.4 mph in the econ mode on highway trips. I don't know what the 2019 will get, but I have similar expectations.

Very Noisy A/C fan

Mandar, Harrison, NJ, 04/12/2019
2019 Honda Odyssey EX-L 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
I bough my 2019 Odyssey in June 2018 and it has about 7K miles on it. when I turn on the A/C the fan makes loud noise which can be heard inside the cabin as well. I compared with other 2 identical minivans and their noise was less than mine. Then I showed it to Honda dealer and they said its normal. Don't know what to do, but I am not happy with it. It feels like I am driving a truck … (noise wise). I am also disappointed with Entertainment options. By combining Rear Entertainment and Navigation, Honda has cut down on the option for buyers to enjoy music the conventional way.

Honda Lost it

Curt, Hightstown, NJ, 11/01/2019
2019 Honda Odyssey EX-L 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
I have a 2005 Odyessy. It has been so good I bought another one without even a test drive. Sorry to say I should have looked at a Sienna too. I have had this now for 6 months and I can tell you the irritations I have come across. Probably not just Honda but having an ipad type control over the HVAC controls is crazy. When your driving you need a fan knob and control for where the air is … going to come from. In the past you could do this without taking your eyes off the road. Now your looking at a screen and going thru menus. Having shifting paddles on a family minivan is nuts. My wife hits them by accident and then the car stops shifting and she wonders why it is making so much noise!!! The dashboard layout and SMALL fonts is a real annoyance. I don't have 20/20 vision and I can not read the temperature it is so small. The first cold day the tire pressure warning came on and you have to go thru a menu to see if it is almost flat or just a couple of pounds low. I have never been a Chevy fan but I have an Equinox work car and I have to say it has a much better layout. Large fonts for trip odometer and temperature. When a tire goes low it shows you all the tire pressures. A REAL annoyance is the rear tailgate does not go up nearly as far as the old 2005. We keep hitting our heads on it and we are under 6 ft. Who is engineering this stuff? Something everyone is going to have to deal with is the feel of the electronic steering and gas pedal. Now that you are not directly connected linked the feel is different and takes some getting used to. The gas pedal is like stepping on a sponge. You will miss the old days. Most people no longer do their own oil changes but they seem to be trying to engineer you out of doing it yourself. The oil filter on the 2005 was easy to get to even though the oil would run down it when you unscrewed it. Now they have put the filter in such a hard place with an beam directly below it so it is almost impossible to put a wrench on it to remove it. On our Honda when we brought it home there was a clunking noise when we hit filled in potholes or manhole covers. Turns out they have to replace the front shock. They made it sound like we hit a big pothole and damaged it, but it was that way when we bought it. After the front shock was replaced my wife said she heard a clunking in the rear. When I drove it, it sounded like the rear shock was loose. Sure enough they had to replace the rear shock too! How weird is that for a new car. They include a mini center seat so you have 8 seats. That is probably worth $200 and now I have to store it in the garage. Instead of shifter paddles and the extra seat it would have been nice to have included a power rear hatch or a CD player. That would be something we would actually use! These are real annoyances that have come to really annoy us. If Honda really cared they would include a feedback email address where you could provide them with comments on what they are making.

Don't be enticed by incentives

Tom, North East, MD, 10/15/2018
2019 Honda Odyssey EX-L 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
I bought the wrong car 3 times in my 45 years of purchasing cars. A 2017 Toyota Sienna was one of of the 3. I just traded the Toyota for a 2019 Honda Odyssey. The Honda is better than the Toyota in every way. When I purchased the Toyota, the new Honda van just came out. Toyota was dealing on the Sienna. I let the cost drive my decision versus the quality of the vehicle. I have have had … no issue with the air conditioning, doors, or lights as reported by others. The transmission in the Toyota is junk. The shifting in very erratic. The Honda transmission is great. Drivability is excellent. I've only had the Honda for 2 weeks, but I'm very happy that I took the hit on the trade and got a much better vehicle.

What’s new

The 2019 Honda Odyssey is unchanged.

Vehicle overview

The SUV may be a popular solution to the vehicular needs of a family, but in truth SUV buyers are missing out on the unparalleled packaging and capability of the modern minivan. No SUV can match the 2019 Honda Odyssey for ease of use or flexibility. It doesn't hurt that the Odyssey comes standard with a strong V6 and comfortable seats and has a list of available features longer than a junior-high choir recital.

The current generation of Odyssey debuted just last year, and it either added or evolved a slew of features that parents or practically minded people should appreciate. The configurable second-row seats are sure to be a favorite, and the night-vision-equipped, zoomable cabin camera makes checking in on passengers a cinch. Remember, it's never too soon to teach your kids about panopticism.

This 2019 Odyssey is, in most ways, a cut above the competition. It seasons Honda's clever packaging with the carmaker's sharp driving characteristics, making for a vehicle that's a thoughtful and enjoyable family hauler. Three-row SUV owners won't know what they're missing.

You can find out even more about the upgrades to this generation of Odyssey in our First Drive.

Notably, we picked the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon as one of Edmunds' Best Family Cars for this year.

2019 Honda Odyssey models

The 2019 Odyssey comes in six trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, EX-L with Navi and RES, Touring and Elite. In typical Honda fashion, there aren't any packages or stand-alone options offered so finding the Odyssey you want largely comes down to picking a trim that matches your desired features and budget. All Odysseys come with a 3.5-liter V6 (280 horsepower, 262 pound-feet of torque) and front-wheel drive. The first four trim levels come with a nine-speed automatic and the Touring and Elite have a 10-speed automatic. There's seating for seven passengers in the LX and eight passengers in everything else.

The Odyssey LX starts you off with features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera, automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats, a 60/40-split folding third-row seat, a 5-inch central display screen, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and a seven-speaker sound system.

Next up is the EX, and it's here you get features that really start to make your life easier. These include power-sliding rear doors, keyless ignition and entry, remote engine start, three-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, enhanced sliding functionality for the second-row outboard seats (Magic Slide), a removable center seat and second-row window sunshades. The EX also has more modern tech with its 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and satellite and HD radio. But, wait, there's more! Honda also fits this trim level with extra driver safety aids that include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist.

Honda starts to crank up the luxury with the EX-L. You get a sunroof, a noise-reducing windshield, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power liftgate, leather upholstery, driver-seat memory settings, and two charging USB ports for the second row.

The EX-L with Navigation and Rear Entertainment System is similar but adds, as its name implies, a navigation system and a rear-seat entertainment system. The latter includes a 10.2-inch overhead display, a Blu-ray player and an HDMI input. This version of the EX-L also has a 110-volt power outlet and a cabin intercom system, which broadcasts the driver's or front passenger's voice to the rear seating areas.

Moving up to the Odyssey Touring gets you the above, plus front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights, automatic engine stop-start, a hands-free liftgate, an integrated vacuum cleaner, a rear-cabin camera monitoring system (CabinWatch), and an onboard 4G LTE connection with a Wi-Fi hotspot and HondaLink services.

Finally, the Elite tops off the Odyssey range with 19-inch wheels, power-folding mirrors, noise-reducing glass for the front and rear windows, ventilated front seats, an 11-speaker premium audio system and a wireless phone charger.

Trim tested

Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions that are fundamentally similar. The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the Honda Odyssey Elite (3.5L V6 | 10-speed automatic | FWD).

Driving

8.0
The 2018 Honda Odyssey is the driver's choice in the minivan class. A strong V6 gives you plenty of power for passing, while the van's precise steering and stable handling instill confidence. It's still by all accounts squarely a minivan, but it rarely seems that way from the driver's seat.

Comfort

8.0
We like how the Odyssey is comfortable in all three rows of seating. Whether you've got a van full of kids on a road trip or you're just taking your friends out to dinner, the Odyssey should keep everyone happy.

Interior

8.5
A minivan should make your life easier, and the Odyssey comes through in stellar fashion. It's easy to get in and out, particularly because of the new lateral sliding function for the second-row seats. The mediocre outward visibility is the only downside.

Utility

9.0
The Odyssey is still great at being a minivan. It seats up to eight passengers and has plenty of room for your personal items and bigger and bulkier cargo. The second-row seatbacks don't fold flat, so the whole seat will have to be removed manually for maximum cargo space.

Technology

8.0
Up front is an 8-inch touchscreen display that runs Honda's latest software system. It boasts modern graphics and is impressively quick to respond to your finger touches and slides. Modern features such as the rear cabin camera and the intercom are useful.
