#1 check trans fluid. Pull dipstick and wipe on white paper towel. If fluid is black or otherwise not red, avoid the car because it needs a new torque converter. That is expensive. Otherwise, it is a comfortable, easy to drive car. Transmission was replaced, cost about double that for an American car. Power steering pump then failed and was replaced. Fluid leakage then increased and power steering rack had to be replaced. I am not very pleased with this car. It is expensive to maintain, much worse than expected

Transmission fails at only 62,000 miles

I am the original owner of a 2002 Honda Odyssey van. On 11/07/2014, van failed to accelerate and the malfunction indicator was on. I had van towed to the local Honda dealership. Service dept at the dealership said the ECL code was P0730. They said transmission needs to be replaced. The approximate failure mileage on van was 62000. I had to pay around $3500 for having the dealer rebuilt the transmission. I had the Service Advisor take photos of the damaged transmission. Service Advisor told me that the 3rd gear has heat discoloration & is burned up. In addition he said, clutches were burnt up. Root cause was heat buildup in transmission. Honda refused any help with the repair cost!

bad tramissions in 2002

The first transmission went out at 36,600 miles. Honda installed a new Honda remanufacturered transmission with another 36,000 mile warranty. Approximately 3000 miles later the transmission went out again. Now my lease is almost up and the 3rd transmission is starting to slip again. The dealer said that Honda is aware that they have problems with the transmissions for this year so I was shocked it was in the top 10 used car list. Prior to this van I had a Toyota Sienna van and I liked that van way more than this one. It had a much better ride by alot and I never had any mechanical problems. The Honda has a very tight feel and every bump jars you. I was very dissatisfied.

You may want to consider buying a new tranny the same day you buy this van. Alternator/battery as well. I have 228000 on this van. It has been good overall but is now on the 3rd transmission and 2nd alternator. Gas gauge and temp gauges are all messed up. They bounce around and are never correct. Certainly, I have 228000 miles and you can't expect perfection but it seems that when things go wrong, they are always expensive things...4K per tranny and over 500 for alternator. I do love the comfort and cargo space. Hoping that I get another 100K on the van and than I will sell.

Its not true, this is NOT the best minivan ever! I purchased it used at 85k, and at 175k the transmission is slipping. I would have hoped for another 100k, but not so. Already time to junk it. My 1964 Plymouth is a better car than this piece of junk. Aside from the transmission issue, the automatic doors have been a pain since day one. My dogs were letting themselves out in parking lots, the doors now mysteriously open and close on their own. One opens and just WILL NOT CLOSE. I need to muscle it closed, not easy. Before the tranny went I needed to replace the alternator (& battery), more than FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS because it took half a day for my mechanic to get it out!! This is unacceptable to me. I should be able to replace that myself if I want to. Not possible with Honda, you will pay through the nose to repair this van, and then the transmission will die, so DON'T BUY IT. Just bought an '02 Chrysler, going back to my roots. :-)

I have 157,000 miles and the car is still very reliable. Only a couple of very minor repairs over its lifetime. Transmission still going strong (except for a pressure switch < $150 that needed to be replaced). Burns no oil. Great acceleration. Better gas mileage than most. Sliding doors are a poor design and stick often.

I bought this car used a few years ago and it's treated me well with regular maintenance. It's comfortable and reliable. The mpg is surprisingly impressive. It handles well for a minivan, although it can get stuck in the snow. I have 215,000 miles on it and it doesn't have any major (or minor) issues. With older cars, you have to expect some maintenance costs and you have to be a little more gentle. If you're looking for a sports car, this is not for you.

I really enjoy DRIVING this van and I really drive it very hard for a minivan. What sold me was the sporty driving it provides. If you like a soft cushy ride with no driver feedback from the steering and suspension, then this van is NOT for you. If you like power, agility and sporty car like feel and ride, then you'll be right at home behind the wheel. I travel WV and all I'll say is it will hang a curve. * VAN: The back windows quit working, probably cause I never open them and are stuck, other than that everything still works inside as it should. The van still looks very good inside and out. Did the 100K service at 200k but had to replace the A/C compressor at 240k. continued belo

The problem keeps coming back. My brother took his van for the recall, "got fixed". A week ago his van broke and he will fixed the transmission for the 3 time. My husband got me an Odyssey a month ago and I didn't want to exchange it because of the bad reputation it has. I was happy with my Nissan Quest it never gave me any problem for the 6 yrs that I own it. I keep the Odyssey because of the 4 doors, it has giving me some problems when I drive it, it loses power and one of the motor lights is now on. It's not a surprise, the mechanic says the transmission needs to be fixed. I'll not be surprise to hear their is a class action against Honda. I'm selling mine, and won't be buying Hondas.

Be Aware Tranny Recall

Had the vehicle a few months and started having tranny problems (not catching going from 2nd to 3rd gear). This model (and similar Honda vehicles) have a recall on the transmission...it has to have a kit installed or the tranny replaced. Other than that, we've been satisfied, it's very peppy compared to the Windstar I used to have. The engine is much quieter too, although, on the road it doesn't seem remarkably quiet.

I love my Odyssey, but it started having transmission problems within 12k miles. I went to have the transmission replaced in Boise after moving (The dealer in Los Angeles told me it was under warranty)and Boise refused. Later Honda corporate refused the repair. So much for a "warranty". I will never buy from Honda again. Given the initial price and subsequent repairs/tires, I would say a 2002 Odyssey isn't worth the price to have it junked. Given the perpetual check engine light and TCS light, I have a mind to abandon it at Honda Corp.

This van has been a terrible disappointment for us. There are so many small problems and a number of really big ones. The transmission is simply junk and Honda cannot fix it. Their rebuilt transmissions are no better. Parts are extremely expensive, more than my BMW. I had a 1992 Prelude which was great but apparently Honda has gone the way of Ford in terms of reliability. Time to try one of the Korean makers.

Purchased this van as used at 37k right off factory warranty expires. Dealer recommanded "extended" warranty but i owed other hondas and did not think i needed one. Now i kinda regret it. About a day after the purchase, i noticed a high pitch noise coming from somewhere in engine bay. Took it to the dealer and they said it is Bad tranny and it needs to be replaced. Fortunately, Honda covered it by honda's good will warranty. Bad thing was dealer did not put enought tranny oil and i had to go back to get it fixed. 2 weeks later. ball bearing on left front went out. spent $200 to fix it. Since it has been about 20,000 miles, and so far no problem.. well hope it would last^^

Disappointed with highway mileage, getting 21 consistantly, thought 25 would be realistic. The pivot point on the seats reclining feels like someone is stuffing a pillow into your lower back, some like some don't. Road noise is higher than expected, especially on a windy day. Not wind leaks but wind travelling around the vehicle, not as quiet as the 98 Plymouth Voyager we had. Some of the road noise could be the tires that were on the vehicle when purchased, planning on changing those. Transmission does a lot of shifting around 35 - 40 like it's not sure what gear to be in.

I bought this vehicle new, for my wife in November of 2001 the minivan has 27000 miles, and the transmission went bad had to be replaced, fortunately the warranty was still in force. The Honda had a recall for the transmission in July 2004 for a KIT OIL JET that was replaced. The transmission went bad in March 2005 and had to be replaced. The automatic climate control does not operate properly in full auto. The brakes make a clicking noise when you back up the car. I was given a flyer that this was normal for Hondas, later on the brake pads were replaced on 07/04

The 2002 Honda Odyssey is an ideal family car and ours has managed to ferry us on many memorable trips. When it's not undergoing repair, we're happy with almost every aspect of the van. However, almost alone among Hondas, this particular model has had persistent problems with its automatic transmission. For us, the problem has recurred with EACH transmission installed to replace the original equipment. The initial transmission was the subject of a national recall (Honda Service Bulletin 04-021). We have also replaced the original tranny THREE times. No kidding!! We're very disappointed.

I purchased new back in Jan. 2002 and have faithfully followed the necessary scheduled maintenance. But guess what, with only 41200 miles, the transmission needs to be rebuilt. The check engine light came on and the code came up p0730 "incorrect gear ratio". Dealer told me that there is no extended warranty, as assumed by many people. The extended warranty applies only to 1999-2001 odyssey. The standard 3 year/36000 miles applies to my case which I no longer qualify. Dealer was quoting me $5000 to $6000 for a new transmission. I brought it to AAMCO and grudgingly handed over $3004 to rebuild transmission with a 12 months warranty. Again, what happen to Honda quality?!

Bought my Odyssey new in 2001. Has served us well. No Major problems. Two recalls and two warranty items. Now have 85,000. I use it mainly to haul stuff like 4x8 sheets of plywood, framing lumber and other building materials. Also, it holds a John Deere 100 series lawn tractor. Home Depot couldn't believe it. Great on vacations for carrying all the stuff we need. Plus friends. Transmission is excellent. Need to do recall on gear lubrication and change transmission oil regularly to get longevity. Considering a 2011 now.

Just got an estimate from the dealer for a new transmission in the amount of $ 5000 and that's with the old PCM (the computer module that dictates how the transmission shifts). It's another $1200 for a new PCM that will supposedly increase the life of these transmissions. This car is only 6 years old. The transmission should last longer in my opinion. I bought Honda because I thought they built reliable cars. This was a disappointment and I will no doubt look to other makes.

We bought our van used in '04 w/ only 12,000 miles on it. Loved the van for 5 years and paid it off. Planned to keep it for a good long time, when without much warning the transmission went at only 85,500. We serviced our vehicle at the dealer faithfully and we towed it there for assistance. They said a new transmission would be almost 4,000 and continued to tell me about all of the transmission issues Honda has been having with their vehicles. We were extremely disappointed and decided to trade the car in for a Hyundai w/a 10 yr. powertrain warranty. Like many of the other customer reviews I've read...we too have lost our faith in Honda's quality.

Bought a 2002 Odyssey.Packed well for hurricane evacuations; great space for 5 dogs,2 cats, 2 birds with supplies; however, very disappointed. Early on, at 3000 miles the engine block cracked and was replaced ; twice the driver rear window power motors stopped working and almost as soon as the extended warranty was out, the other window motor quit working. Seat belt replaced; transmission went out at 70,000; lots of road noise, driver door lock broke and was replaced with a lock not compatible to key for other door locks;rubber bumpers for sliding doors have completely MELTED off the hinge. Am looking at other options for a vehicle. Mileage steady 20/23; city/hwy.

After a lot of research from all the best web-sites and test drives from dealerships and friends and family with minivans and SUVs we ended up with the 2002 Odyssey EX-L. No regrets about this vehicle at all. After our decision was all but made, the final test was how closely the Ody would match the wonderful experience we've had with our Acura 3.2TL. And after going feature-for-feature between the EX-L (with 6 in-dash CD and fog lights) and the TL we were absolutely sold on the Odyssey - equal or better across the board!

I traded in my 2000 Town and Country for this Honda. I thought I was getting a better vehicle, but now I wish I had simply bought another Town and Country instead. The Odyssey is not as comfortable for both the driver and the passengers. Doesn't feel as solid as my old Town and Country and the road noise is bad. The third seats folds into the floor is nice but I think that's where most of the road noise is coming from though. All the reviews I read seem to suggest it's a better van, but I now do not agree with most of those reviews.

Tranny has been slipping for 18 months. Dealer wants $4K- $5k. Independent tranny shop and one Honda salesperson say welcome to the world of Odyssey. Other than tranny and few minor electrical issues, I like the van. Front end too low. Minnesota snow breaks the plastic. UPDATE- We ended up getting a new tranny ($3,200) two months after my original review. Fifteen months later we had catastrophic engine problems and put the car down. Since then a friend bought a used 2006 Odyssey. Tranny died four months later. We bought a 2015 Sienna and love it.

This is an excellent all-purpose minivan that drives more like a car. The 240hp engine and new 5-speed transmission are flawless. All things being equal, this is best minivan on the market. It has much more usable space than the Explorer it replaced.

7000 miles later, there are rattles from all different locations in the interior of the vehicle that no dealership can see to find let alone fix. The real gas milage is more like 15 mpg in the city and 18 on the highway not 18/25 like it said when I had purchase it. The ride was bumpy new and even bumpier now after a whole 7000 miles, the wind noise drives e crazy. I was talked out of buying the MPV and paid $4500 more when my friend bought a MPV for less money and it ten times happier with his purchase. This cars rattles, guzzles gas, is noise, and bumpy, not to meantion the power doors choose to work when it pleases and the transmission jerks at times when engaged???????????

We bought this van early in 07 with between 70 and 80,000 miles. It was really clean and nice. It drives and handles nice. However just a couple weeks ago while driving on the highway the transmission started acting up. We took it in to get checked out and now we have to rebuild the transmission and hand over another 3 thousand dollars. I was very disappointed -definitely not what I expected from a Honda and for the year, mileage and price we paid for it, this should not be happening. Only other complaint is the sliding doors. They are slow and can't be stopped midway. If the electric is off for some reason or the doors are stuck they are very, very hard to operate.

Basiclly pleased with our 2002 EX, but I would like to know if anyone else out there with a 2002 that is towing or plans to tow anything has heard that you need a tranny and a powersteering cooler installed...the bulletin is somewhat new cause our salesman knew nothing about it, but service did. Honda recommends not towing until this is done...comments anyone???

On the whole this has been a good vehicle. I pull a small cargo trailer with it and am having transmission problems even though it has had all of the Honda services required and I have Honda House change the transmission fluid each fall.

I have been the driver of Large Vans for years I have had 16 custom vans and I want to tell you this is a very will thought out van. I can hall just as may people and carry just as much equiment like 7 sets of golf clubs.I wish in the USA we could come up with as good a van.

In short, if you need a minivan, why not drive one that doesn't make everyone think you are a dork. This is our sixth Honda, and we have been disappointed to some extent every time we stray away. This car drives like a sports car compared to the Toyota Sienna we used to drive. The 99-01 Odyssey was the best minivan available in the US/Canada; the 02 adds 35 horsepower, 5-speed aotomatic and disk brakes a

Transmission?

I just found out that the transmission in this van is bad at 110,000 miles. Honda dealer wanted $5500 to repair with a rebuilt transmission. They also told me the front engine mount is collapsed. The total repair bill to fix everything and have the 105,000 mile service done is $7,400! After looking at these other reviews I now see I bought a vehicle that is poor quality. I have owned Honda vehicles for the past 15 years. However, this will be the last.

I bought an ody for quality - what a mistake. Its been to the dealer 4 times already. A serious "drift to the right" problem forcing me to hold the van straight by applying force to the steering wheel to keep it straight. The power door decided to start opening and closing itself one day while in my driveway! The rear vents are nosiy as all heck and had to be replaced but the replacements are squeaking a bit now too, and some of the dash lisght come on and then go off while driving! Serious lemon.
