Major change of heart on engine

We were originally mortified to learn about significant issues with the Earth Dreams engine in this vehicle. Engines were stopping mid-drive and cold weather proved a serious problem, according to reports. However, after a few initial hiccups that concerned us about improper oil level and mixing of fuel and the interior briefly smelling of fuel, this car performed flawlessly for the three years we drove it. The interior is exceptional. Looked like new when we sold it. Absolutely love the sensing technology. It was a bit sluggish in returning to original speeds after slowing, but overall we enjoyed it. I am retracting my initial poor review of the vehicle. Three years of very enjoyable and maintenance-free driving requires that I do.

The Old Grey Fox!

I am in my early 50's and I feel like a kid again being behind the wheel of the 2018 Honda Civic LX in the modern steel metallic color. Having just ended a 3 year lease on a 2015 Honda Accord LX, I have to say that I have no regrets leasing the new Civic. The reason for changing from the Accord to the Civic is due to the awesome redesign of the10th generation. Being 6 foot and 2 inches tall I need a lot of leg room and I have plenty and also good head room because of the height adjustability that the driver seat has. The 2018 Honda Civic looks like it is in motion when it is parked and the car feels like a 4 door sports car. Now don't get me wrong, I know the car is considered to be a economical compact car but with this redesign you are getting so much more "bang for your buck"! Thank You HONDA!!!

Absolute PERFECT car for smaller woman!

I am a 5’I woman, who recently brought a 2018 Civic. I have been through three cars in the last three years, two of them being brand new Honda products. (Accord & CR-V). Had NO IDEA how the scale of the car would affect my sense of control, comfort and enjoyment! I..am.. in..car..heaven! It is a FABULOUS car for anyone, but is the PERFECT car for the ‘height challenged’. IF YOU ARE, DO NOT BUY A CAR UNTIL YOU TEST DRIVE THIS ONE!

For a smaller vehicle, it meets expectations, overall. The road noise can be bothersome when road surface is rough, the wind noise, particularly on the passenger side can be annoying, and there are air leaks when running the AC on Auto. Although satisfied overall, I wish that I had opted to purchase another Accord. The gas mileage is outstanding!

EXL w/Nav Leather

AJ, 07/22/2018
2018 Honda Civic EX-L 4dr Sedan w/Navigation (1.5L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
23 of 27 people found this review helpful

Had the car for 45 days now, I drove it as a joke as I wanted to drive every 2018 in their line-up and I did, far and away the Civic, blew me away after owning 4 Accords in a row. I traded my 2011 Accord EXL in and its 8 inches shorter and has essentially the same cabin space. My major complaint is there are only three cup holders all located in the center counsel. They should have bubbled out the doors (all 4) and added 4 more cup holders. If you have owned a bunch of honda's in a row like me the technology is not quirky at all, you get the growth progression. Navigation is good, but sucks you can't use it while driving, quick fix is to program all of your locations and name and save them in advance, that way you can use them while in motion. The navigation is a built in Garmin and even tells you the posted speed limit on the road so you know how fast to go, a very important piece as the car has an eco mode (which I get 40-48 miles to the gallon on the highway driving like a normal human being), then you can pop it out of eco, in to normal drive and your car is extremely fast with the 1.5 turbo, you think it's quick in that mode, drop it into "S" for Sport Mode and hold onto your seats the car is fast. I've had several cars at stop lights or on the highway drive up and want to race. Yes, I've lost twice, I've beaten low end mustangs and camaro's with ease, I've beaten the SI Focus, and the SI Fiesta. Some upper level sport cars have gotten me but they rolled down their window at the stop light and couldn't believe they barely beat me. The brakes are phenomenal and so is the acceleration, the heated seats are the best I've ever had, the A/C doesn't have vents to the back seat...but that's not a deal breaker, my kids can still get cooled off it just takes a little longer. The leather is high-end and very comfortable. This is a driver's car for sure and your listening to an Accord lover. I test drove the new Accord that has the same engine and it was just okay, it was heavier, slower, bigger, and didn't have as much excitement on the inside, "yes," it had more cup holders and was a little more luxurious, whereas the Civic is a little more edgy and sporty. If you want the Accord that screams around the like the Civic, you have to get the 2.0T which will run you $35,800, I just couldn't do it, I already own a Pilot Touring and if I'm spending that kind of money I'm getting another Pilot, but not the 2016, 17, or 18, which are all junk "literally," The 2019 has just gone through a mid-model fix and is the one to buy in the new body style, otherwise stick with the 2012-15 models, your talking to a guy who has owned 2 Civics, 4 Accords, 3 Pilots, and 1 Odyssey. Rule of thumb with Honda, always buy the EXL, EXL with Nav, or Touring Models new or used. If you have to settle due to budget the EX works but you lose leather and heated seats and some other things as well. Don't even bother with a model below that....you will get your return on investment on the other models regardless of miles. I got 6K on trade for my 2011 Accord that had 145K miles on it. The trunk space in the Civic 4 door Sedan I have is huge, the leg room in the front seat and back seat is better than my 2011 Accord and I',\m 2012lbs and 6' tall. Even with my wife and three kids the turbo engine does it's thing and you don't lose performance due to the added weight. If your radio and nav behave weird, or abnormally, hold the audio button for 15 seconds and it will reboot like a phone, remember it's a computer and needs to be restarted every so often. One other quirk with the Nav is that I jump time zones for work, so when I leave the CST for the EST zone the Nav gives me the arrival time in the timezone I'm in, not the one I'm heading to, this is very primitive as this was worked out in the older honda's, but as soon as I'm in the EST time zone it adjusts itself, I've gotten used to it. For those who complain about gas mileage, it is a cap-less system, so take your time when pumping, and top off your tank several times by gradually pulling out the nozzle as you pump and pump slow at the end. If you drive like a grandma, the gas mileage will blow your mind, highway miles are nuts, if you like to have fun in town and use the turbo, which you will, you still get a good combo of in-town/hwy between 32-37 combined mpg, the car is just a driver's car and your going to want to get on it. With that said, the A/C, Nav, and cup-holder issue is not enough to make your have buyers remorse, I get complements all the time. I bought OEM mud-guards and put them on myself, I had it tinted, and I'm ordering the all-weather mats as I have the white exterior and black interior. This car is "tight," my wife takes it every chance she gets. I've drive the Acura ILX built on the same platform and my EXL with Nav blows it away on all level. There is nearly no road noise other than the throaty turbo when I'm getting on it, what a freakin' car!!!

Our regular vehicle is an Acura RDX and we needed a 2nd car backup. Since we're mostly retired, neither car will see many miles. The Civic (with the 1.5L turbo engine) is fun to drive, peppy and reasonably comfortable on the highway. The entertainment system with Apple Play is nice; the 8-speaker audio system is OK, not great. I like to rear-view camera on the passenger-side mirror that looks backward when the right turn signal is on (but don't crunch it - as we found out, cost to replace is $1,000). All in all, it doesn't quite rival the BMW 328xi sitting in our northern garage, but at half the price, we're very happy with the Civic.

Shopped a Mazda 3, Subaru Impreza,, VW Golf and the Civic. The Mazda felt old and bulky. The Subaru could not get out of its own way, underpowered. The Golf seems to be the quickest but did not have the features of the Civic. I you got the most car and features from the Civic and it is the newest design. The resale value is has always been tops in my market, you can't go wrong faith the Civic. The complaint I have is the passengers front seat is uncomfortable as there is very little adjustments.

It's best for an under 50 crowd...anyone that has difficulty getting in and out of a vehicle might think twice about the Honda Civic, especially the passenger side. Front passenger seat does not adjust up like the drivers seat. This car is super fun to drive and handles like a sports car.

The design and performance of this car is well above average. My only disappointment is the infotainment system. People have complained about the audio controls, yet Honda has yet to change them on the 2018 Civic. I wish the EX model had power seats.

Great Handling with Phenomenal Mileage!

I chose this Honda Civic for it's great handling and superb mileage. You get a big bang for your buck with this automobile. The turbo engine adds fuel efficiency and lots of pep when you really need it. The car is so quiet and handles like a sports car. The trunk is very large and easily accessible. I was blown away by how roomy the back seat is for a compact car. I just purchased this Civic so I can't comment on how it will hold up in the future, but it sure has a great track record.

Check into steering issues before buying. I loved my car after I bought it. Now at 3500 miles the steering is getting stiff and off. Had it at the dealership and they helped it but now its doing it again. This is my first new car and this is my first Honda. I am very disappointed. I looked it up and others are experiencing the same issue. I am looking at getting ridof mine.

14,000 Civic LX

Having upgraded from a Chrysler to a Honda, the first thing to note is the engine performance. The Chrysler I owned was very sluggish, had a lot of lag when accelerating, and did not farewell in the city. The Civic on the other hand has been a dream the last 1000 miles. While there is a small amount of lag, if you ask it to go, it'll go. The engine overall is nice and quiet, doesn't 'hiccup' and responds nicely to both throttle, and breaking input. On top of that the gas mileage on it is the best I've had of the few cars I've owned. Right now it's doing around 7.3L/100Km (~32 mpg), and I'm not the nicest to the throttle. The a/c on it blows cold, even on a low setting, and thanks to the small (But large feeling interior), the car cools down quickly even in the hot Arizona summer. I love the sleek redesign the 10th Gen Civic's received, and the variety you have to choose from. Due to budget constraints, I had to elect the CVT base model, but even then it's a great car. It drives nicely, has easy to use controls, and while everything is right there for you on the dash, it doesn't feel crowded. I would have chosen a different color interior, but the cloth and carpets are very nice. The seats are extremely comfortable and there is a lot of leg room even with the front seats all the way back. While I am disappointed in the lack of a CD player and tape deck (Not surprised, no one uses tapes) the audio system is great. The biggest thing I would change about the car is just the panel to panel and panel to window gaps. They're a bit large.

Exploding Sunroof

Do not buy a Honda with a sunroof. We had 20,000 miles on our 2018 Honda Civic and the sunroof just exploded driving down the freeway. We brought it to the Honda dealership and they said it wasn't under warranty because it was glass. Honda corporate also denied the claim. They have lost a life long Honda owner because of this. The lady at the dealership even said that she doesn't buy Honda's with sunroofs because she has seen this happen several times. If you google exploding sunroofs there are many stories like mine.

This is my first Honda. I love everything about the car except for the entertainment screen. As noted by other reviewers, it’s very slow to respond to touch. This is first noted when you turn on the car. It goes through the setting up mode every time you start the car and it takes about 20 seconds before you can do anything with the screen, especially when you plug your phone into CarPlay. I’m still having difficulty with the audio function. You press the screen to turn it on or off, and there are times when it doesn’t even respond and I feel I’m fooling around with it more than I should have to. The only other gripe I have with the interior is the dashboard itself. There’s a noise that comes from the piece under the vent and it only stops when I press my fingers on it. Just a squeaky sound from a loose piece of plastic, which can be annoying. Not sure how that can be fixed. Other than that, I love the car! It looks classy and is fun to drive. I’ll be hanging on to it for years to come.

For the money, it is hard to beat a Honda for build quality. For 20k, I have Honda Sensing, Android Auto, sunroof, great climate control, great gas mileage, and some good power. I looked at Kias, which should be the cheap cars, and it would have cost more to get the options I wanted. And this will hold its value much better. My mpg is right around 30, even with it being winter, me warming my car up in the mornings, and me goofing around with it in these first thousand miles. I expect that will go up and I will see the EPA estimated mileage by summer.

I love almost everything about this car. Lightning acceleration for small sedan (I am running KTuner, 205-210 hp, 250-260 FtLbs). Tech is awesome, the touch screen is slow. I don’t seem to have a problem with adaptive cruise control or collision mitigation as other reviews have. Exterior looks are great. I put on after market rims. Didn’t like the factory ones. I also upgraded to all LED lights interior and exterior. I figure about $200 for everything. Well worth it. Very quiet for a Civic. The CVT is smooth and very efficient. I get 45 mpg highway and average 37-38 daily. Lots of stop and go. Seats have great support but are a little firm for my comfort level. I put on a padded cushion. Cameras are awesome for back up and blind spot when passing. I will be upgrading tires when these wear out, not enough wet or dry traction.

I have test drove many different types of vehicles prior to settling on this one. This Honda Civic has the easiest steering and handling of all the cars I test drove. For those who have weak arms or are suffering from some sort of disability with their arms, I highly recommend driving the Civic. After my accident, I've had trouble turning my steering wheel (especially when trying to turn left or make a u-turn), but not with this car! It feels like my arm was never broken when I drive behind this thing. It has a great turn radius as well. The gas is pretty alright on this car - takes me about 1-1.5 weeks before I have to refill my tank - mainly because I live in California and that traffic is just terrible on the MPG. If you like listening to music (especially music with a lot of bass), it's better to go with the Touring. Unfortunately, I didn't (I went with the EX-L), so my sound system isn't all that great. My 2010 Nissan Altima had a MUCH MUCH MUCH better stereo system (Bose), so it was a joy riding that car. My altima also had very very little cabin noise. The new Honda Civic has a bit more cabin noise, which I'm personally not a fan of. I prefer it to be quiet (aside from my music). For a second to top tier trim level, I was pretty disappointed that it lacked some of the qualities my altima has even though my altima was just a second trim with a convenience package (altima 2.5s). Otherwise, great car. So far, works the way it is expected to.

I sold my 2006 Accord EX-L to get into my 2018 Civic EX-L to give reference to my review. I am impressed with the 1.5 L turbo engine. The power and torque makes all styles of driving fun and engaging. The CVT is surprisingly good. Many people dislike CVTs for whatever reason but Honda really got this one right. The Civic has one of the smoothest shifting CVTs I have ever driven. The style is sharp and looks better than any past Civic I can remember. The interior feels and looks very nice. I like the instrument cluster, it is not the best, but it works for the design of the car. The backseats are small as you would imagine in this car class. The size of the trunk is good. The negatives about this car are the dimwitted climate controls and the infotainment system it lives inside of. The infotainment system is okay but the climate controls are just woeful. I cannot tell you how much fun it is trying to turn the A/C on in Texas in July at 5PM in the afternoon and waiting 5-10 seconds for the climate control screen to awaken so you can activate the A/C. My Civic does have remote start which is great but waiting those agonizing seconds to change to AC and crank up the fan speed takes away from the comfort the remote start might have provided. Lesson is anticipate the climate of when you return to your car so you only need to fine tune the A/C settings rather than melt while waiting. My only other small gripe is that there is no seat back pocket behind the drivers seat which cheapens an otherwise nice interior. I wonder whose bonus got saved by deciding not to include two seat back pockets. Overall, the Civic has been treating me very well and it is so much fun to drive. I likely won't buy a car this small again due to how tall I am however I fit in the car with no issue but no one fits behind me when I drive. I am very impressed with what Honda has done with the Civic. Update (10/20): Everything is pretty much the same as written above except the climate controls are a bit more responsive upon start up of the car, instead of 5-10 seconds it is closer to 3 seconds (software update?) but still longer than it should be. One thing to note, since this car only has direct injection you will want to use a fuel additive/cleaner every so often (I do it every 5k around when I get my oil changed) to prevent sooting in my engine. The problem I have encountered is the fuel dilution problem that is more notable with the CRV of the same generation but my Civic has that same engine (1.5 L turbo). I went to the dealer to try to get that solved because my oil reeks of gasoline which should not happen in any car. My service advisor said he had never heard of this problem with the Civics, which was really obnoxious, because you can very clearly smell the gas in the oil system when you pull the dipstick. The dealer replaced the drain plug (with rubber gasket), reprogrammed the fuel injectors and TCM, and did and oil and filter change. Bottom line, my oil system still reeks of gas after 2 oil changes since the warranty service to correct the fuel dilution problem. While this won't be a problem in the near future, those of you buying this generation of Civic with 1.5 L turbo with more than 60k-75k miles will want be aware of the fuel dilution and know that it will likely deteriorate rubber and plastics within your engine quicker than normal.

I've only had my 2018 silver EX-L for 3 weeks but I'm loving it! The leather seats make a huge difference and is worth the splurge, especially if you're going to have the car longterm like me. It drives very well (although I wish I had Honda sensing), is very spacious, and is a great looking car. Gas isn't as good as advertised...but I live in the city and drive in mostly traffic, so I probably get 30-32 MPG, not 40. Overall, recommended. You can't go wrong with Honda

Just purchased this car in Rallye Red. I’m amazed with all the features it has at this price point. It’s like a mini accord in a smaller package. Too soon to write about reliability but it’s a Honda! Do yourself a favor and get this car!

My last Civic was a 1994 sedan. The 2018 Civic is a totally different car. That's to be expected due to changes in technology, but it still amazes me that the new EX-L (with leather seats and all) cost only $10,000 more than the base trim version that I purchased 23 years ago - yet it offers so much more. I appreciate little things, like the automatic headlights and door handle sensors, much more than I expected to. Compared to my latest car (a Volkswagen), the gas mileage is excellent. I'm not wild about the CVT - it feels oddly "soft" and I can't get used to not hearing the gears shift - but combined with the turbo, it provides plenty of power and acceleration. The biggest disappointments: 1. The touchscreen infotainment system is pretty awful. Changing audio inputs is like a three-step process, and adjusting the climate control settings requires at least two steps. (Oddly, the only thing that has an actual button or dial is the temperature adjustment.) 2. Initially, I found the driver's seat to be extremely uncomfortable. I've been able to improve the comfort a bit using the power seat controls to make lots of tiny adjustments, but I still end up with a sore back after longer drives. Things I really wish this car had: 1. Adjustable lumbar support. 2. Memory seats. 3. Anchors inside the trunk to tie things down and keep them from sliding around. 4. Rain-sensing windshield wipers. 5. Programmable garage door button(s). 6. Blind-spot monitoring on the left side.

Purchased a 2018 civic from Westbrook Honda......air conditioner went....compressor and condenser on order. Westbrook Honda fixed the air conditioner and since then the vehicle runs great. The car tracks like it is on rails and has plenty of power. The more I drive the car the more I like it. Westbrook fixed the air conditioner and the vehicle runs great....love it Love the car maybe next time I wouldn't get a dark color but that is about the only change.

Expensive Coffin

This car should be banned from production. It is not safe to drive on anything but dry, pristine, pavement. It does not handle well in the rain, sleet, wind, 1 inch of snow ( anything deeper, just stay home!) spots of frost, bits of random uneven pavement, small bumps. All of these send this car "squirreling" about on the road. The best I can describe the feeling is that you are driving on a bunch of marbles. The back fishtails and weaves with the slightest change in road surface. For example, we recently encountered a few miles of pavement repairs where they just apply the road filler to the cracks in the highway and I felt the car slither side to side when I drove over them. Very unnerving. At first, we thought it was just the cheap factory tires that came on the car, so I bought the most expensive, quality all seasons radials I could find and it did not make a difference. Disappointing. Another thing consumers should be aware of is the gas mileage significantly drops when you upgrade tires. Weird huh? At first, with factory "cheapies" I was getting 45 mpg average. Now with high grade tires, I can only get about 36mpg average. I'm old and sensible driver with economy driving practices. In conclusion, as soon as economically feasible, we will get rid of this scary hunk of tin. Until then, I drive it to the grocery store and back and only when the sun shines.

The first car I ever loved was a Mazda but the customer service was terrible. It left a bad impression on me. Then I got a Honda. I had strangers tell me a couple times how reliable of a brand it is, which I didn’t know. The customer service was better than I imagined. It’s a reliable car, comfortable, and easy to care for. Overall, the best car I’ve ever had. I’m most likely going to stick with this brand for the rest of my life, which says a lot because I’m not even 30.

My fourteenth Hondas all great cars, but why so many? Each of my children deserved a Honda, one son lost two in car crashes which were replaced with Hondas. Son #2 lost one in a crash and it was replaced with a Honda plus one for his wife, another Honda. Of course my daughter, did Not lose any in a crash but got a Civic Hybrid and Honda Insight for her son. A generous father who wants to be sure my children are safe even after serious crashes. All of my personal Hondas have been great and especially our current 2018 Honda Civic LX.

Civics have come a long way! I particularly like the brand reliability, as the last 2 cars I've had from other manufacturers had serious problems. So far so good with Honda (1.5 years into ownership) Pros: storage (you're able to customize configuration), safety ratings, great acceleration, layout of cockpit, sleek styling of car overall, great gas mileage, heated seats, Maintenance Minder (computer gives oil use as a percentage, rather than overall mileage-based scheduling), navigation is easy to use, Andoid Auto or Apple CarPlay are easy to set up Cons: No lumbar support (I mean zero). This didn't bother me at first, but it sure became an issue over time with a daily commute of 70 miles. Should be included in the top trim level. Touchscreen - I echo those in the camp who say it's distracting and not user friendly. But then again I don't like to rely on screens in general. If there was a totally analog option, I'd take it :) Ambivalent LaneWatch - this is a camera on the passenger side mirror that shows the blindspot for when you're making a right turn or changing lanes to the right (activated upon turning the blinker on). I think I prefer a traditional radar-based blind spot monitoring system, but I'm getting used to LaneWatch. There is no auditory cue if someone is in your blindspot, like traditional BSMS, Nothing for the left side, either. Overall it's a great little car. Let's see if my 40+ year-old back and hips can deal with the seat over time. Honda: If you're going to market to the middle-aged, you gotta give us some more support!

Infotainment Problems

On May 31st 2018, I was not happy to buy my 2nd Honda Civic as I had a bad experience with my 1993 Honda Civic. The reason, I bought 2nd Honda Civic as my wife wanted this car badly. And the reason I did not want to buy the 2nd Honda Civic for the following reasons with my 1st Honda Civic 1. The Spark Plug Distributor was old technology whereas Toyota Tercel (which was cheaper than Honda Civic) had an electronic spark distribution system. 2. It was a pain to do regular maintenance compared to Toyota’s 3. Did not last as long as the Toyota Tercel which my friend bought. 4. Was expensive to maintain compared to Tercel/Corolla. Sometime in October 2021 the infotainment system started giving problems. It used to go blank for sometime and come back, touch screen stopped working, could not see the backup camera on the right- hand side camera. Did some research on the web and youtube.com and found out that lot of Civic owners had these issues? I tried some of their ways of fixing by resetting the system, replacing the fuse. Worked for a few months and then it totally went dead in the first week of January 2022. There was no recall on this issue but Honda Pilot owners had a similar issue and there was a recall on it after numerous complaints being filed with NHTSA. I filed a complaint with NHTSA and contacted the Lemon Law lawyers. They mentioned that you have one issue with this car, but if you had multiple issues, we would gladly pick up your case and advised me to contact Honda. In the mean time I took my car to the Honda Dealer and they charged me $2670.94 for replacing the power block behind the infotainment system. So, I paid 15% of the car price for replacing this part which was a highway robbery. I contacted Honda Company in the last week of January and was given a case number. Honda contacted me a few times to update me about the case. Finally, they contacted me in the 1st week of July and implied that it was my fault that the infotainment was out of service and they cannot help me in any way. If any of you Honda owners reading this and having similar problems please file a complaint with NHTSA, contact the lemon law lawyers and file a complaint with the Honda Company. If enough of you take the above steps, then some action will be taken and the consumers will not be left holding the bag. 2 months ago my Catalytic Converter went out. Took it to the dealer. Luckily it was under warranty and they fixed it at no charge. But I wasted about 12 hours and multiple trips to get it fixed. I am done with Honda's. Will have to look for other reliable brands/cars in the future, but not Honda.
