It's Still Junk!!!

This is a 22,000 mile up-date. The trans shutter, hesitation and noise are even worse. City driving in this car is awful, terrible and irritating. We've given up dealing with Ford and their dealerships. They can't fix the piece of junk they designed and built. We'll just pay it down and get rid of it! AND we will NEVER purchase another Ford product ever! This has been a terrible experience. Stay away from Ford and their dual-clutch junk!!!!!

Good for 142,000 miles then transmission fails

I bought this car in 2013. It was good to drive for 9 years. Now it constantly in limp mode, which cannot drive more than 30 miles per hour. If I disconnect the battery then connect it again, and in a sunny day (no rain, not humid), then the car may back to drive again, but next time it go limp again. The Ford service said it needs a clutch, shift motors, and transmission control module replacement. But they cannot find a transmission control module to repair my car even if I am willing to spend $2500 to repair it. Disappointed. I won't buy a Ford anymore.

The worst car I have ever owned

RMS0821, 07/28/2020
2012 Ford Focus SEL 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl 6AM)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

I purchased my Ford Focus SEL Hatchback in 2012 used with 20,000 miles on it. I wanted a subaru, but opted for the focus because of the similar body style I was digging. Test driving it, I questioned the rougher than normal ride for a small hatchback but was given the rundown about the new transmission and how it saves on fuel. Cool. Well it would have been if the fuel system had not decided to collapse 1 year after owning it. Luckily Ford replaced and paid for it because it was not human error and no one could diagnose it. That was only the start of the nightmare. There are too many recalls to go over here but by far the worst was the class action lawsuit because of the transmission. I am not being dramatic but just relaying my experience with a car that never should have left the factory. The amount mechanics that were stumped by something as simple as lug nuts that were stripping every time I had my tires rotated is all due to Ford creating underwhelming faulty technology that was never tested which then led to a fuel pump replacement recall to the transmission recall and the electric system shutting down while on the highway. I am now trading it in for a whopping $400. This car is a death trap and will take all of your money. I can't stress enough how awful this Vehicle is.

Have had my 2012 Ford Focus S w/automatic for 6 months and just under 9000 miles. Great driving car. Relatively quiet and smooth riding for a compact. Terrific handling. Interior is well laid out. Nice seats that are fairly comfortable. Inside and out, the car is a looker. So far, averaging 42.8 mpg. Can't wait to see what kind of mileage I get on the freeway. So far, quite satisfied. Very nice car.

Traded in an Audi Q5 for better gas mileage and lower payment. Expected to feel like I was 'downgrading', but the Focus was quite surprising. Interior is comfortable and well laid out. Quiet inside with solid ride. Sound system is not quite up to Bang & Olufsen system in Audi, but not bad at all. I actually like the My Ford Touch interface better than Audi's MMI. Lots of nice touches in this car that even Audi does not offer (e.g., LED interior lighting and a sunglasses holder that actually holds an adult pair of sunglasses). Test drove Elantra and Focus was much, much better. Car is brand new so averaging only about 28mpg. I hope this number improves as the car is broken in.

Avoid this unreliable car

In addition to transmission-related grinding, shuddering and halting described by every other reviewer, I have experienced the following problems: At 5,500 miles, the "body control module" failed, resulting in loss of instruments, headlamps, tail lights, turn signals, etc. while driving. The car was, of course, not road worthy, and required 3 days of repairs. At 9,000 miles, the "audio control module" failed, requiring two days of repairs. The vehicle's electrical system is still not quite right. Recently (26,000 mi) a bearing required replacing (2 days of repairs). Finally, the clutch needs replacing (2-3 days estimated repairs). Bottom line: This car is not reliable and should be avoided.

This car looks good, and thats where I stop praising the 2012 focus, right of the lot I felt a shudder when taking off and car was sluggish didn't think much of it, started to notice hesitation when accelerating from a low speed after coast down, harsh or late 1-2 upshift, harsh shifting. 1st trip to shop was told it was bad gas, next 2 trips it was reprogrammed, problem still here and MPG went from 32 to 29mpg, finally was told that this was just the way the new transmission was, and there was nothing to be done, Also A/C randomly quits blowing cold air, I should of kept my SRT 4.

Just passed 170K miles. Under the hood all I’ve had to change was the original fomoco battery (2017) gone through bulbs in heads and fogs, just replaced all four rotors @160k (129.00 on amazon for the set). Now another detail about the toughness of this little escape pod looking beast is that when I hit a deer head on doing 45 or so mph. Bottom plastic cracked (zip tied up) only slight bend in front of hood (fixed myself) headlight housing and hood prop housing cracked/split (zip tie fix) that’s it! I get 32.4 mpg and it’s most all highway, I live at 2800ft and work at 80 and I also drive moderately (maybe it’s the handling package with 18” wheels) 2012 Titanium Hatch seats arctic white, navigation, 5 speed, handling package.

A good vehicle with some critical flaws

The Focus is a fun to drive and comfortable car. The exterior styling is well done. That's all that's positive with owning this vehicle. Negatives: 1)Automatic (DCT) is awful, and seems to perform worse as the vehicle ages. Three Ford dealers have been unable to fix its behavior, simply stating that it's performing normal. 2)MyFordTouch is so maddening in its design and performance that I barely change the radio station or use any of the other features or inputs. Sync Services is a disaster of voice recognition and insufferable prompts. 3)Ride quality is great on smooth roads, messy on uneven pavement. Make sure you test drive it on roads you'll be driving it on. 4)Cramp rear seat

Major issues with transmission!!!...Recall work done (a computer reset???) last week of June. Driving down Hollywood Fwy. at midnight, 4 days later and car just stalls while driving!( full tank of gas) Pull to side of fwy without getting killed by rushing traffic, key is still in on position so turn a notch and car starts... drive onto side street where the car abruptly stalls again. Managed to get car home to Huntington Beach and then fight with HB Ford dealership over such a poor quality car. No resolve from them so stuck here with an unpredictable brand new car....

Bought the 2012 Focus April this year. Within 500 miles had it back in the shop twice due to tranny shifting bad. This transmission is the worst thing Ford has snuck onto it's public since the Pinto. Even after reprogramming the transmission TWICE, the car's driveability is the most unpridictable of any car I have driven. When I pulled into traffic on June 5, it shifted from 1st to 4th within 15 feet and nearly got me killed. I took the death trap back to the dealer and gave it to them. Dealer says "talk to Ford" - Ford says "talk to the dealer". I'll probably Lemon Law the car unless I'm made happy this week.

The Ford Focus Titanium is a very sporty and fun to drive car. However I have had three manufacturers recalls, the transmission shudders, the sound system is poor. Most problems are covered under the warranty but because of known problems the car has three different warranties extending the warranties on drive train and electronics.

I bought a 2012 Focus with leather, and no my ford touch. The car was used with 34,000 miles 11 months ago (rental) and it now has 52,000. This is a completely honest review of this car. Comfort wise it is pretty awful. It seems no one talks about how rock hard the front seats are, and how it becomes unbearably uncomfortable after 2 hours in the seats, and I am definitely NOT fat. The road noise is insane, but this car has original tires on it. The transmission (automatic) is horrible. It constantly jerks and shudders into gears and when it shifts, it brings the RPM's so low that all the torque is gone. You have to keep the car above 3000RPM to actually move. I think thats enough ranting.

We purchased this car over a year ago. We have 16000 on it no troubles. Transmission shifts very smooth. just let it shift it's self. everyone is talking about tranmission, just let it shift on it's own. I have driven it in cross winds of 30 to 40 mph. wind on some long trips, steering is amazing. Handles better than my town car in a cross wind. Gas mileage has been 35 mpg on trips with a/c on at 70 to 74 mph. If I slow down to 60 I get 40 mpg. City driving is 30 to 32 My only complaint is it is hard to get in and out of and the ride is frimer than i like. The direct fuel is a winner. I tried to get 60 size tires on it, not available on SEL. FORD makes you buy what you do not want .

$27K vehicle, my 1st Ford and my retirement car. At 6,500 miles: 1. Major issue - "known" transmission issue. Upon acceleration the vehicle feelsl like it is not getting gas, chugs, and it feels like it will die. Dealer reprogrammed PCM /TCM with no improvement in performance. Was told not to bring the vehicle back because there is nothing more that can be done. Totally unacceptable. 2. Gas mileage is less than 30 MPG on the highway. 3. New rattles everyday. 4. On some music the speakers get crackly and sound like you blew one out. 5. Cheap interior carpet - major wear on the driver's side. 6. Rear seat belts have weird position and functionality.

My 2012 Ford Focus sputtered on acceleration at times after purchase. The dealership said "it adjusts to the driver" and it "mimics a manual shift". It began to stall, the parking assist never worked and was replaced twice, the parking sensors would go off for no reason and the sputtering continued to worsen. I was later told there is a known problem with these vehicles. This was not disclosed when I purchased the car and it was intended for my 16 year old new driver. After exactly 12 months, the transmission went bad. Now I am in a new car with an outrageous payment because I was upside down. My choice was taken, if I had known there was an issue with this car, I would not have bought it.

poor mileage, worse customer service from FMC

06/08/2012
2012 Ford Focus SEL 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl 6AM)

FMC advertisements and website make untrue, deceptive and misleading statements as to mileage for the Ford Focus. FMC customer service is indifferent or dismissive and unresponsive to dealer statements that there is a 6,000 mile break-in period - FMC says what I've been told is appropriate and they concur. I drove an almost 2,000 mile road trip, on cruise control through Ill., IN, OH, PA and NJ to document my recorded 31-33 mpg. The dealer says I get 37.5. The math is simple. The FMC representations are absurd and astonishingly arrogant and offensive considering $20,000 is spent on their product. The transmission had to be recalibrated twice to get it right.

My 2012 Ford Focus has been a good car. I haven’t had much problems with it. Only thing I’m a little disappointed is the air-conditioner. I live in Texas where it gets into three digits and it takes a while to cool off. I’ve noticed that on other Fords, not just mine. All in all, it is a great car.

Had a 10 Focus and the engine noise was unreal so the salesperson lied through his teeth and said the new 12 fixed the problem. The engine noise is to the point on the I.S. you can not hear the radio without blasting it. The handling Pkg. 18" wheels has you riding as if you were on a Go-Cart! Jerky trans. dealer said thats normal! Gas mileage what a joke unless less you drive 55. Other than that great styling and fun to drive, but it's my last Ford & I've driven them since H.S. and i'm 72. Was going to get a Fuson but my buddy said it was JUNK and in the garage 13 times..[non-permissible content removed]

This is our second 2012 Focus. The dealer had to buy back the first because of: trans problems, front end problems and misaligned body panels. Now the second 2012 Focus has many of the same problems plus some new ones: the car goes into neutral at highway speeds, the mysink system & bluetooth malfunction and the gas mileage has dropped off. Additionally the engine idle is rough and noisy. The 2012 Ford Focus is also a poor value. The best trade in we could get on an immaculate looking car with less than 12,000 miles is $14,000! These cars do not hold any value whatsoever! My suggestion . . .don't but this car! Look at the new Dodge Dart, superior quality and workmanship!

Great Car With a Few Caveats

T, 09/08/2016
2012 Ford Focus S 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)
1 of 4 people found this review helpful

Love this car, albeit with a few minor nitpicks. It's fast for a base model, drives great with the 5 speed (I did not want the DCT!), handles fairly well and visibility is very good. Power delivery is linear, throttle response has only a very slight lag from the drive by wire system (1/10th of a second or so) and it really comes alive above 4k RPM. The electric power assist isn't as good for road feedback as hydraulic, but is better than other electrics I tested by far. The interior is somewhat on the small side, especially in the back but is just large enough for me and the seats are high quality for basic cloth. The only real nitpicks are the lack of S level features and a few noisy interior parts-no cruise, manual rear windows and no computer functionality except a trip meter. The engine is a bit coarse also and really needs super to run right. I can live with this considering I rarely use cruise and almost never have rear passengers, but do miss having a realtime MPG calculator. The sound system is adequate, but somewhat mediocre in terms of fidelity. Coming from an older VW GTI, this car has almost the same HP, handling, steering feel and responsiveness while getting much better gas mileage. I've had no maintenance issues except having to replace a dirty air filter and a missing brake fluid cap that someone had sealed with plastic wrap and a rubber band (??).

TAKE CARE ... the driver seat can cause leg pain if you are somewhere around a 32 to 36 inch leg . I am 6 ft, 180 lbs, 34 inch inseam (leg) and the drivers seat has a pressure point on the outer upper thigh. I have never experienced anything like this (noticable pain in the left leg) in the Mazda or Toyota's I owned nor did I experience it on any test drive ... if you are interested in the Ford, take it for a 20 minute test drive !!

I bought my 2012 Focus on January 14th. The interior styling is nice. The car is responsive with the sport suspension package. The gas and brake pedals are a little too close together. This car is no speed demon in any sense of the word but it does well. I am not getting the advertized gas mileage even though the eco system says I am a champion. The car des seem to stumble a bit when parking in close areas. Don't plan on carrying passengers in the back seat unless you have short legs and can move the seats up. Average people forget about it.

Great reliable car. Few things that I can say I don't like about this car is the place where the aux plug in is there isnt much storage for the driver and the compartment for change if get filled pretty high usually when turning might dump change under the seat which is very had to get out but not impossible. Only mechanical problems with the car that I've had is the rear passages side sensor to tell if it's closed or open went out and driver side wheel bearing went out. Very sleek looking interior and exterior looks sleek enough to look good but it isn't overkill for a to sporty look. Great visibility all around for being a compact car. Headlights off light and brights make it very visible at night. I'm 5.10 and fit comfortably in the driver's seat my knee does rest on plastic by change compartment but doesn't bother me. Heat/a.c. work great get cold/warm fairly quickly. Transmission shift pretty smoothly and very short first gear for automatic but still smooth. Okay so my 0-60 just timed on a phone if your interested was 9 sec which isn't bad for fully stock car I choose to put plus gasoline for better acceleration and I'm still getting 28-30 mpg. For accessories the compose and temp. Is very useful for traveling. Well that concludes my review if you have any more questions I would be obliged to answer through email at wcoltonmcginnis@gmail.com love this car p.s straight piped this car sounds fantastic.

If you think to buy New Ford Focus, think again, Do not do it. My 2012 Ford Focus has lot of issues regards to SYNC system. every day new error masseges for phone conections, one day whole system and screen went black and every thing was off. the car is shaking after long drive if try to take off. there is seat belt safety issues if for any reason unlock the seat belt while driving there will be no worning light or sound also if leave the and come back and start driving there wil be no any sign of worning. over all very poor quality but very nice design. This will be my First and Last Ford Product.

From day one (1JAN2012) this car has been an issue. I have spent more time having the transmission checked than I should. Mine is a Lemon. I've had issues from random loss of power to not starting. There is nothing like being stranded in a parking garage after black Friday shopping. I just bought new tires and am not happy. This may look like a fun hatchback but believe me its a MoneyPit. This is the last time I buy ford. 43,000 miles, all maintenance current, problem "unable to be duplicated", 10 times it has failed to start. Ford should really google this problem before stating "it has never been reported issue"

I'm terrified to drive this thing. Much like the other reviews, the shuddering was an issue from the start, but I was told that it was part of the new design. Two years into it, I can tolerate it. However, now the car just decelerates for no reason and the check engine light comes on. Keep in mind that this happens anywhere and anytime, even on a major highway going 70 miles an hour. The first time it scared me so bad. I took it in and they claimed it was an engine light issue, kept it for two days, fixed it, and sent me on my way. Less than a week later the car has decelerated and come to a complete stop 3 times. I took it back to the dealership...I will update you on their response.

Mistake in buying this car

Car handles pretty well, looks good, gets great gas mileage on the highway, ok on city miles. Some good accessories. That annoying transmission does NOT get better, gets worse. Had issues of parts not being installed completely, screws left off, etc., which were fixed mostly by the local dealer. But I have been disappointed and wanted to trade up at dealer where I bought it Sunny King Ford Alabama...4100 miles only on car. They know all the issues I had and acted like they would make it right for me. They offered me almost half what I paid-4 months!! Resale is pathetic! So really think before you buy.

Buy the Manual Trans.

First off I opted for the Manual transmission and am not dissapointed one bit with its performance. Most of the complaints on this car are about the about the auto transmissions and the MY Ford Touch system. Eliminate these options on your future Focus and you are in the clear in my opinion. 43,000 miles and have only had to replace the rear deck lid because they used some cheap foam in the cut outs near the rear window. Easy and free fix in the original warranty. 32MPG average in a good mix of city and highway driving. The S and SE have the manuals but why on EARTH they didnt include it in the other models is beyond me. A huge mistake Ford should correct.

Started out as a terrific car

Started out as a terrific car, we bought our 2012 focus sel hatch in 2014. We do oil changes religously, use pea additive 1x month, and use quality gas. In 2016 the trans kept over heating backing up 50feet, then no reverse. Dealer replaced trans mod n/c. Then june 2018 i bought an obd2 scan tool as the service engine light came on... P0301 cyl 1 misfire. New coils, new plugs, deleted code. Po301 back on and running rough. Injectors? Not pulling intake. Added gumout with pea... a week later after adding 93 octane mobil, light added pea every fill. Ghost code now present. Could not find a code but light on. Updated scantool . Still no code light on. Disconnected neg terminal of battery and applied a jumper from + to - cables. All ok. For 5 miles. Ghost code on and off. Picked up cam and crank sensor but before installing them, i traded car in on 2016 awd trax

Update from previous review. Still like it after driving a 2012 Mazda 3 SkyActiv for the last 2 weeks as a rental. The Mazda 3 SkyActiv seems to get slightly better gas mileage, but it's not as easy to live with as the Focus.

I am a Ford fan and will continue to be so, only a little wiser. We leased a 2012 Ford Focus SE with the automatic transmission. The engine is very peppy and accelerates well, as long as the transmission is in synch. The transmission sometimes faulters with the engine RPM going above 7000, not good for the engine.Dealership at first said the car would adjust to our driving, then had it checked/adjusted by their trans "pro",then have said there is nothing wrong. The gas mileage is 3-6 mpg under what I expected. The rear deck foam disintegrated. The trunk leaks during rain. There are rattles in the front suspension area.Car has just passed 40000 miles and we will be turning in car at end of lease

I purchased a '12 Focus SE Sport hatchback with the manual MTX-75 5-speed transmission and 17-inch option wheels, 203A package in May of 2012, and so far am very satisfied with the car. At the price point ($20k), it's an extremely competent little car. The engine has a lot of get up and go (with the TCS off especially), excellent handling, a great gearbox, and a very refined ride. The car regularly returns a combined fuel economy over 30mpg average, and I've gotten nearly 40mpg on the highway. The stock ContiProCotact Continental 215/50/17 tires are alright, though they're holding up surprisingly well in a Northeast winter. Overall, a very fun, affordable, chuckable car. Kudos to Ford

2012 FOCUS SFE - Transmission died $4,300 fix

I have a 2012 SFE that I purchased in Nov 2011 with 7 miles on it. Before I ever drove it, the salesperson told me about the shutter and explained why it was doing it and that it was normal. Within a month of getting it, I had to take it in to have the transmission "reprogrammed". That stopped the issues for a while but within another month I was back again. The service tech told me the same story and that I should keep driving it and it will eventually get better. I drive 120 per day all highway miles. At 84K miles I had to replace the transmission. $4,300USD.

We took delivery of our 2012 Ford Focus Titanium 5dr Hatchback in Blaze Yellow in Jan 2012. It now has over 18,000 trouble free miles on it and is our main family car. We have had it in for 2 updates, and I have processed 2 sync updates at home which were lengthy but fairly easy. The daily commute is over 40 miles and we have averaged 32-33 mpg since new. On long highway trips we can usually get 41 mpg. Overall we love the car and feel we made the right decision.

Poor ride quality. Steering is heavy. Excessive Road Noise. Finicky electronics. Confusing controls. Difficult to enter/exit without hitting head. Chrome from dash vents reflects in windows and distracts vision in side-view mirrors. Transmission fine on highway. Too jerky for stop and go traffic. After 4 years of ownership, still hate the car but the value has depreciated so quickly we would take a huge loss to replace it. So we are stuck with a poorly designed product.

Overall, I liked the Focus I purchased new, but as time went on, several issues popped ip. Interior quality is much improved and I loved all the techy features. I had the Titanium with premium and winter packages, moonroof. No Navi or self parking though. After several updates, the Sync and My Ford Touch system was finicky to use with an iPhone, steering wheel controls would do the opposite sometimes, moonroof would reopen when trying to at 70 mph. Sync does not understand "yes" very well. Several rattles in drivers door and headliner area when cold outside. Auto/manual transmission leaves little to be desired even after the refresh. Great handling car, firm but comfortable ride.

We bought our Focus in August 2011 and were pleased with it for 2 of the 2-1/2 years we had it. My wife drove about 90 miles a day for most of the first two years and all was well. It handled like it was on rails, was comfortable and the mileage was great. Highest I got was 45. We got used to the quirky shifting but when my wife changed jobs and did mostly city driving, the clutch became unreliable. We also had electronic issues. We were told by Ford that we needed a new clutch pack and that it would be in by the end of next month. That went on for 4 months. Fed up, we traded it at a big loss due to transmission issues. Then Ford called to apologize. We love our new Buick Verano!

I have owned my Focus HB Titanium for 10 months now, and have for the most part enjoyed it. The controls are difficult to read in direct sunlight, and there are LOTS of reflections from the shiny interior trimwork, but the most frustrating thing is that the Sync system does not seem to understand a word I say. Asking for directions is a big reason I wanted Sync, but I wish I had never gotten it. In the beginning, the car was slow to move from 1st to second, and nearly stalled several times in the middle of busy intersections! After an update, though, this problem seems to be corrected. The handling is great!
