2013 Ford Edge SEL

A loaded SEL was the best bang for the buck and allowed for easy customizing. Not a fan of Fords attempt at Chrome and Blacked out elements as upgrades, The SEL had all the safety features I needed.

I was a little leery about buying a used vehicle but this car has exceeded my expectations. It drives smoothly. I love the panorama moon roof. I love the luxurious interior. I love everything about this vehicle. I will try to post a review next year to give my thoughts then as well.

We like the ease of entry & exit. The ride comfort is very good & we do not arrive tired after long trip. Fuel millage is within the posted figures, sometimes get 26 on the road, mostly 17 around town. We like the layout of the interior.

Wonderful Mid SUV

I wish that the trunk would open higher and I wish the side mirrors were larger. The touch screen entertainment center needs to be revamped as the "buttons" tend to work 80% of the time when touched. Also, attempting to connect a smartphone to the car's Bluetooth can be quite the headache-inducing chore if it works at all. This is a wonderful vehicle. Bravo, Ford. Edit: There have been several instances in which the buttons on the steering wheel do not correspond with the entertainment center. As well, there have been several instances in which the entertainment center display will not activate upon the start of the vehicle. While these instances do not occur very often, these are annoying. 5/12/2020 - Since my last update, the A/C system has had issues. This is specific, in that the driver side a/c will blow hot air while the passenger side will blow cold air. This has happened twice in the last year. As well, the large touch screen will tend to be unresponsive on rare occasion and there have been a few times when it will not even power on. 11/12/2020 - 170,000 miles. The a/c is wonderful, until one side blows boiling hot air and the other side continues to blow cold air. That is a costly fix. As well, the gas cap that Ford introduced to these models as an adaptation of the racing gas cap is HORRIBLE and will throw your Check Engine Light constantly. But, those two things aside, this continues to be a wonderful midsize SUV from Ford. 178,000 miles - I HATE the gas fill cap, or lack thereof! It has been a constant pain, throwing off warnings, since roughly 125,000 miles. 11/14/2021 - I still HATE the gas cap as it sets off dashboard warnings ALL THE TIME! The dual a/c system still malfunctions, causing one side to blow boiling hot while the other is freezing cold as they are set on the same temperature. 5/16/2022 - The gas cap is STILL a HUGE problem for throwing off warning lights on the dash. We've had it "repaired" and it still happens. The dual zone a/c system is mostly capable but has had issues. The linkage between the steering wheel buttons and the radio can be iffy sometimes. 11/18/2022 - NOT happy with the gas cap. This is a CONSTANT pain point from Ford. There is always a Check Engine light coming on for their idiotic gas cap system from the Ford Racing Team. The air conditioning system is starting to be lackluster. 5/24/2023 - The gas cap issue is a HUGE problem. That one piece keeps setting off the Check Engine light, which is a HUGE annoyance and burden. The air conditioning system being split into two hemispheres is somehow a burden on the electronics and has required work. Then, getting any kind of air conditioned air to the back seat of the SUV is tough to do through little vents behind the center console. 11/26/2024 - Still overall a great SUV. Gas mileage is an average of 22 mpg with mixed highway/city. The center console screen is mostly great but occasionally unusable. The backup camera is mostly unusable and occasionally ok. The capless gas tank is STILL A HORRIBLE IDEA!!! No matter how many times you replace the inlet, it will throw off check engine lights!

A few quibbles

Mike LaBella, 10/14/2017

We purchased a 2013 EDGE SEL 4wd with 38,000 miles on it and it appeared to be in mint condition. Several months later, I noticed that one of the rubber door gaskets was twisted out of position, and could not be reinserted so we had to have it replaced. Several months later, another gasket detached from the driver's door when I grabbed the top portion of the door, although it was easily put back in position. I've owned 15 cars in my lifetime and never had a SINGLE door gasket fail. When test driving our Edge, I had not noticed how the doors close with a clank, unlike my son's 2014 Corolla that close with a "THUD." I'm no engineer, but all four the doors seem kind of flimsy for a nearly $40k retail vehicle. I don't care for the rear bumper top surface, which on many SUV's (including my Hyundai Santa Fe) have a black protective plastic shield. I already have a have dozen scratches and dings in the bumper's pearl white paint from normal wear. I'll look into an after market protector. The transmission shifts strangely from a stop into first gear, or when downshifting from first, as it kind of slams into gear, which doesn't inspire confidence so I'm glad I bought an extended warranty. Although I will bring it in to have it checked out, but in my experience with other vehicles with the same kind of problem, it usually doesn't show up as an error code... Road noise on the highway is higher than I would have expected, which could be the factory Michelin tires. I'll have to have them inspected but I'm not confident they will find anything. Seating and visibility are excellent, and interior materials seem to be of good quality. When braking, the EDGE doesn't slow down smoothly as other vehicles I've owned. I have to apply more brake pressure than I'm used to, and the Edge kind of stops abruptly. That's probably my biggest complaint, so again I have to bring it to the shop to have it looked at. The rotors were replaced at no cost to me a week after we bought the vehicle, as they were found to be rusted and noisy, but the dealer should also have replaced the pads too but did not. I don't like the USB ports hidden in the center armrest. If the road noise were less and the brakes operated more smoothly, I'd be a lot happier with this EDGE.
