Lemon ... fresh out of GM factory

This is an brief overview of my experience with my Chevrolet and with General Motors in the last year. Back in early 2018, I chose to trust GM and factory ordered a new Cruze ... and since the day following delivery, I started facing malfunctions with that vehicle, which accumulated and escalated ever since, despite dealership service departments’ best efforts and multiple part replacements. - basics : 2018 Chevrolet Cruze LT 6M Diesel, delivered 15 Feb 2018. - malfunctions : since delivery ... blank dashboard, misfiring engine (for several months), diesel particulate filter regeneration failures (occurrences seem to happen randomly, and are still unexplained by GM), multiple vehicle “alerts” (over 25 check engine light / OnStar error code occurences). Initial delivery was delayed by weeks since vehicle inspection had revealed malfunctions that needed to be fixed. - remediation : all these malfunctions resulted in at least eight specific trips (often multi-day) to my dealership service department (obviously not including standard maintenance), and multiple part replacements (including EGR valve and fuel injectors - some taking well over a month to reach the dealership). Pointing out my vehicle does not live up to the most basic expectations one could reasonably have with a new car, I have given GM ample time and opportunities (through their standard “Customer Care” and escalation processes) to offer a reasonable resolution. Their response is there is no “lemon law” in Canada, and they have been diligent in dealing with these issues according to the warranty terms. As a conclusion, the accumulation and escalation of technical issues with my vehicle would have led me to recommend against similar engine (1.6 diesel) vehicles (current generation Cruze, Equinox and Terrain). General Motors blatant refusal to stand by their product and reputation now leads me to recommend against any of their products.

No Compromise

2018 Chevrolet Cruze LS 4dr Sedan (1.4L 4cyl Turbo 6M)

If you want a car with class leading MPG that still has all the creature comforts like electric windows and air conditioning, a smooth engine and supple ride, and still delivers over 50 highway and about 35 city MPG — then this is a no brainer. Most importantly it feels solid with heavy doors that embody GM’s focus on passenger safety. It’s got handling precision yet doesn’t feel lightweight on long trips. I have the manual tranny model LS, a choice of those who take on a full driving experience. I over-revved it one morning and the check engine light came on. I found no other driving issues but brought the matter to the dealer’s service dept on my way home. They said it was too late to start working on it but would do it the next day and gave me a loaner to drive meanwhile. They found out that just some carbon had settled on a sensor and fixed the problem. Their loaner-a Cruze LT automatic-was not any appreciable difference over the LS other than the slightly better speakers. Offsetting that, it transmitted more engine vibration- felt through the steering wheel-and had more road noise with it’s wider tires& aluminium wheels. The auto slows the car down off throttle. Sometimes the bottom of the front air dam hits the road when you are exiting a parking lot over a sloping sidewalk.

2019 Chevrolet Cruze Premier 4dr Hatchback (1.4L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

Bought my Cruze new June 2019. Had it for almost 7 months 6000 miles not one issue so far. I realize that is no guarantee of longevity or long term reliability but my 63 years experience has been that new cars that do not need warranty service right away are a good sign of build quality. Nothing negative to say about the car at this point. If the next 100k are as good as the first 6k I will be very happy. At 24k and 36 months replaced 02 sensor. 501.00. Way to expensive. Was not happy with my dealer response. Update at 28k 48 months. No new issues since 02 sensor last year. Had car now for 4.5 years, almost 30k miles. No issues or repairs since ladt update.

Very Good Compact Car

I was looking for a good compact car as a daily commuter to and from work, and the 2018 Cruze is exactly that. After testing a bunch of compact cars, my favorite was the 2019 VW Jetta, but I went with the Cruze because it was less expensive and the VW dealership in my area was much further. The Cruze is not super fancy, but it gets the job done. Pros: Lots of legroom for the driver and front passenger. Trunk is very well shaped. Once it gets going, the little 1.4L turbo engine can really haul. It's quiet and stable on the highway for a compact car. It actually feels bigger than it is in many ways. Crash test scores are excellent. Also, its infotainment features are very good. Good radio and climate controls, Bluetooth works seamlessly, satellite radio is very clear. Also, I love that I can see the tire pressure for all 4 tires, as well as the battery voltage and the engine oil life percentage remaining. Makes me feel that I have a decent understanding of what's going on with the car. Cons: While the car can move very well once it gets going, from a stop it feels just a bit sluggish - clearly the engine needs to rev a bit to get into its power band. Also, I'm not too keen on the stop-start feature. It's pretty seamless, but I feel it adds complication for very little fuel savings (especially since I drive mostly highway). Also, the driver's seat doesn't really have lumbar support, but a $25 memory foam cushion fixed that. Finally, the rear seat passengers don't have a lot of legroom (competitors like the Jetta and the Corolla have more). Brakes are decent and mileage is OK (low to mid-30's on average, high-30's on the highway). Over all, I'm very happy with my purchase. The car is comfortable, maneuverable, roomy and rather fun. Plus GM had some incentives that priced it lower than competitors.
