The 1996 Chevrolet Z71 is a great truck.

I bought the truck used with 157,000 miles on it. I've put nearly 20,000 on it since I had it which is about a year. The only things that really went wrong was the alternator went out and a pulley on the belt od=f the alternator which is just normal. I also had the foer wheel drive checked out but nothing major was wrong. I am usually a Ford person but buying the Z71 was a wise choice. I think it is as good as the F-150 trucks I had before it. I will probably drive it till it drops. It was well worth what I payed for it. The motor has plenty of power. It pulls a travel trailer easily. It gets around 20 miles per gallon which is good for a full size truck. I'll keep it till it quits.

Have 170,000 miles and still going strong. Powerful Vortech 350 best GM has ever had in my book. Only problems to date are thermostat, u-joint , and one fuel pump but that's no big deal with the amount of miles. Drive it till the wheels fall off, but the way its going i don't know if that will ever happen. GREAT TRUCK!

In five years, she has never seen a garage other than for standard maintence (oil changes, ect.). Love the first year VORTEC engine. Lots of power if you are willing to scarifice the gas mileage. In my opinion I will never own another truck.

I purchased the truck to be my play thing, my work truck and a family hauler, not in that order.. The 5.7 Vortec engine is great for hauling, power and acceleration, but it rarely skips a gas pump (lead foot). My highway mpg with cruise is in the low 20's (with a T-Cover) The truck is perfect inside and very close on the outside. The only major repair I know of was the 4x4 system overhaul by the previous owner who hauled horses all the time. This is normal for most any 4x4 truck when it is used. It is nice enough to drive to the office and fun enough to haul cubscouts in the local parade. Sound system is excellent. I recomend it for anyone looking for a good all around truck!

I've had my Chevy for a little bit over a year now and it hasn't let me down yet and sure doesn't show no signs of stopping. With 122,000k the truck still runs great and the engine still good as new.

drove the truck daily for 3.5 years, bought it with 140000, has 230000 now, no problems yet. Body did rust a little, but these trucks with the 5.0 will run forever as long as you take care of them. Still use it as a work truck, would drive it anywhere

Since purchasing this truck a year ago (143,000 miles) the only repairs I've made were the water pump and brake rotors. I've put this truck through its paces and it keeps on going. I couldn't ask for much more. GM hit the mark with this truck, the z-71 package and 5.7 hauls 5th wheel trailer without hesitation and has handled everything i've thrown at it. Overall a great truck with many more miles to come.

This is the most recent truck we have purchased and I am happy to say that it will probably live on the ranch as long as I do. Although the long wheel-base makes it a pain to park sometimes, the truck itself has got more pulling power than we know what to do with. The 5.7L Vortec engine was passing diesel trucks and gas vehicles with bigger engines when we had her weighed down with our 20 ft. Horse trailer with built in living quarters. Overall, this has been one of the best purchases we have ever made.

i originally purchased this truck for the gas mileage (V6) and to haul my dirt bike in. Installed a K&N filter and MSD for better mileage. Ride is good. Controls and comfort are good. In the last 50K miles had to replace alternator ($100), water pump(~$50), fuel pump($400), ignition module ($500) and the air conditioning compressor ($500). Also all exterior handles. total mileage 96K. Wipers sometimes works, sometimes not. Purchased standard transmission, auto transmission fails after every 70K miles (known several people who have auto trans problems). Will most likely purchase Chevy van as next vehicle, have had worse luck with Ford and Dodge.

Until 115,000 miles the only problem I had with this vehicle is an alternator going bad, and a problem with the push- buttom FWD. Otherwise it has been a great truck. I have had 2010 lbs of sand in the bed of this 1/2 ton (500 lbs)truck, I have towed 17,000 lb city buses up hills from 1/2 way up the hill and from a dead stop, and have frequently towed a 7700 lb boat(23ft.) with it. Bottom line, I cannot complain!

this is my second K1500 Silverado, my previous was a 1992, that I loved and drove to 225,000 miles. I bought this 1996 with 225,000 miles on it in Feb 04 for $4800.00, I put about $2400.00 into it and it's like a brand new truck. It does feel like it tends to wander more going down the road and sways more in corners than my 92 did. It was amazing though how much this FELT like I was driving a totally different truck from the 92 to the 96. They drive totally different in feel. This truck has way better interior design than the 92. It's always making strange little noises from different areas, I guess the acoustics are just different too. Over all I really like this truck. I'll get another

I have replaced radiator starter alternator and belts that's pretty much it. Wasn't really a truck guy till I got this at 148000 miles still going strong. These gas prices are hurting but I can't really part with it. I'll keep rolling till the wheels fall off. And I can do some of the work myself as a rookie mechanic. Will be a loyal bowtie fan forever.

This truck was the best truck I have ever owned. I found this sight looking how to repair a inside door handle that has wore out But it has 398 thousand miles on it now. Good maintenance on this truck means good life on this truck. I am I was going to trade it in.and when they told me what the value was for it I decided to keep it and when It gets a little older I might trade it in but maybe not. Thank you David Stanley and GM you built a great truck for me

I bought my '96 Silverado in Jan 2000 with approximately 50-60K (can't remember). Previous owner had abused him. Luckily, my warranty captured many of the falacies due to the abuse. To say the least, I love my Silverado. It's all I drive. My other vehicles are the S-80 Volvo and Kia Rio. Like the commercial goes, Chevy trucks are built like a "ROCK." I'll keep this truck until it falls apart. So I'll have another 20 years of marriage.

Bought with 108000. the engine, trans, diff fluids were all burnt and neglected. Even the radiator was empty.I changed all the fluids tune up and its still going strong at 150000. There were several reasonably priced bolt ons from the part store btween 130 and 140000 miles. Alternator, waterpump, fuel pump, fan clutch, but overall a strong, nice looking driving truck.

I really wish that Chevrolet would build interiors like my 96; comfortable, spacious, and built to fit 6 in the cab. I have had no problems with my truck; I purchased it new. The only real problem is getting tires to last as long as my Chevy.

Bought new With regular scheduled maintenance this truck has been great. Did first tune up at 100000 miles and was still running great. Truck has been replaced by a 2005 C1500 1/2 ton crew cab, didn't have the heart to trade it in, will find it a good home where it will give another 150000 trouble free miles.

I tow snowmobile trailers and other heavy trailers quite a bit in the mountains of Colorado. My 1996 k1500 has been the strongest all around pickup I have ever had/seen. I only have one problem with it, the brakes. I am not happy with the drum-disc brake combo. They heat up pretty easy and wear out fast but other than that with 125,000 miles I have had no problems at all.

Fourth GM Truck Purchase

I just bought my fourth fullsize GM truck today -- a used '96 Silverado X- cab. My previous used purchase was a 1997 GMC Suburban (same vehicle). It had 287,000 miles on it when I traded it in on a 2002 Suburban, and the only repairs I ever made to it was an intake manifold gasket (at 280,000) and an alternator (at 260,000). The received Mobil 1 10W40 its entire life and ran and looked like new when I sold it. I'm sure that vehicle will go for 400,000 miles with no problems. Unbelievable. I look forward to the next 309,000 miles on my "new" '96 model.

Here's a review from some serious experience - over 200,000 hard miles! This truck carries a tradesman cap and a full load of tools/supplies every day. And it hauls my kids to soccer practice, too! Though it's a little rough around the edges after seven years, this Chevy stills feels solid over the hard bumps, and still offers my tired butt a nice comfortable seat. When this one dies, I will go out and buy another one, with far fewer miles on it, of course! This truck will take whatever you subject it to, with some pretty ordinary maintenance along the way (much of the original equipment remains intact). I guess it really is "like a rock"!

I recently changed from Ford to Chevy. This isn't the first GM vehicle I've owned, but if this one is indictive of their trucks, I will definitely buy GM again. The 4.3 litre engine has plenty of pep and it doesn't cost $100 a week to drive.

Terrible vehicle. So far replaced manifold gasket, water pump, starter X2, A/C compressor, and clutch because the slave cylinder leaked. I have spent more on parts since purchase than I did over the 22 years I drove the last vehicle. For some strange reason GM did not cover the rails on the bed with the bed-liner - I wonder how much they saved doing that?

3rd owner with 170,000 miles when bought now has 175,000. I know its not a lot. Has the 5.7 350 vortec. Had to fix the water pump and idle control valve right off the bat. I've done a lot of work to it only due to its age. All mainly maintenance type parts like brakes, fluids, tune up ect. I have bad frame and body rust that's going to get taken care to eventually. Fenders arent ate up entirely thankfully.Every gear shifts great except 2nd to 3rd. It might need a transmission rebuild sometime in the far future. It starts on a dime on every start up. Motors the best part about the truck. Runs as smooth as a 2024 model. Despite the rust and little repairs I've done to it it's not bad for an almost 30 year old truck. I'd rather buy the 96 n only have 10 or 15 in it then a 2024 n shell out 60,000 or more.
