Delayed Review
I have this car for about 4 years now. I am usually not an aggressive driver because I do not want to ruin the car (someone must think I am nuts to buy an M5 and drive like a grandma). I found it very powerful with the full power on. As I bought it in its first generation, I had many problems with oil leak, SMG failing, radio malfunctioning, and dead on the road (due to electronic problem in SMG). Well, after many trips to the dealership, it has been doing well recently. SMG is very sluggish between 1st and 2nd gear (it stinks especially when you are at a stop sign and want to speed up, but the car just gets "lazy"). Love the BMW full maintenance program. Love the iDrive too.
have fun while burning money
I have never driven a better car. It is blindingly fast, handles like a small sports car, holds four adults in comfort, has all the room for luggage you'd ever need. No other sedan offers this kind of performance and comfort for four. All that said it is an enormous money pit. Parts are ridiculously expensive and not always available - forget the dealers, few are well trained on this model. Gas mileage overall was 13 mpg, drive it hard and that can drop to 8. It drinks very expensive oil (Liquid Moly) - 1 quart per 300 miles was normal, not just my car. All the hate for the SMG tranny I felt was unwarranted. The car in auto mode was stupid but paddle shift it in sport mode and you won't miss the third pedal. The controls are way more complicated than need be - a friend described it as a car designed by German engineers for German engineers. Mostly this was the result of trying to offer a multitude of different ways to program the vehicle. Once you've figured out what works for you this is a non issue. Years from now I think these will be true collectors pieces representing the best of BMW's naturally aspirated luxury performance sedans.

What I expected
Have had this vehicle 4 months now, so far very good experience. My second BMW, both purchased new, and thus far more reliable that previous (X5); really no problems that have required dealer visit (after a few items that were resolved at 1200 mile oil change). Great stealth car - looks much like "normal" 5 series to most, but really goes when challenged. Good daily driver, with room for luggage and 4 adults, and makes to / from work or airport almost fun. Sometimes tough to keep under speed limit - suggest a good radar detector, and set the speed limit warning because easy to go fast (set mine at 85). Given other alternatives available today, would buy another if this one disappeared.
Oh My...
I have owned an NSX, S2000, E46 M3, Porsche TT, and F360, however nothing compares to the new M5. Simply amazing. Power everwhere, handling like no other, and space for 5. Simply amazing.
This car is awesome
The M5 is a legal race car. So many things to love about this car. It is also an eye catcher, mine is Indi-red exterior and red interior, very sharp! The SMG does take a little to get use to, but does give the car a racing feel. Oh, and the exhaust note is heaven.
