Overview
Based on BMW's full-size luxury sedan, the i7 looks just like a 7 Series, inside and out. If not for the i7 badges and other small details, you might be hard-pressed to tell the difference. Underneath the sheetmetal and cabin, the i7 is something else entirely, equipped with a single-motor rear-wheel drive or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive electric powertrain offering up to 314 miles of range. A technological tour de force, the BMW i7 is swift, silent and decadently sumptuous.

Edmunds spotlight: High-tech highlights
As one of BMW's flagship vehicles, the i7 offers plenty of technology. The features you expect to find in a six-figure luxury sedan are present and accounted for but with special twists. For example, the panoramic sunroof has LED Sky Lounge lighting, and beneath the BMW Curved Display, the dashboard has a touch-sensing strip of illuminated glass. Rear passengers can enjoy the optional 31-inch BMW theater screen boasting 5G connectivity, 8K resolution, and Amazon Fire TV integration. Other upgrades include Highway Assistant for hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph, a Remote Control Parking system that operates through a smartphone app, and an anti-theft recorder that captures video inside and around the car if the alarm triggers.
Competitors to consider
Within the luxury electric vehicle segment, the BMW i7 is one of four sedans offering high-end luxury, performance and prestige. The sturdy i7 looks nothing like its rivals, which include the elegant Lucid Air, curvaceous Mercedes-Benz EQS and timeless Tesla Model S. Each one has its pros and cons, and since we rank specific versions of the BMW, Lucid and Tesla more or less evenly, choosing between them is a matter of personal preference. Be sure to check out our Expert Rating of the BMW i7 to learn more about this electric car.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8.5/10
How does the i7 M70 drive? The BMW i7 M70 certainly doesn't lack for speed. At our Edmunds test track, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. That used to be a time you'd associate with an exotic sports car. But in today's world, mind-bending as it is, the M70 actually trails behind competitor cars like the Mercedes-AMG EQS and Tesla Model S Plaid. If numbers are what you're chasing, the M70 won't be the hot topic at the bar, but in practice, the power and speed will still leave most passengers breathless.
We are pleasantly surprised by how well the i7 moves and maintains cornering composure. There's plenty of grip, and the suspension does a good job of keeping the body roll in check. The M70's suspension feels just a touch tauter than the base car's, but the M70 ultimately posted nearly identical skidpad and 60-0 mph brake numbers. This is a common theme we've noticed with electric M-badged cars — their performance advantages are limited mainly to straight-line stuff.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the i7 M70? An auto-leveling air suspension is standard, tuned to M specifications, and our test car also featured a road preview system that can read the road ahead of you and prepare the car to handle any bumps or potholes that are coming up. Combining these systems allows the i7 to deliver an incredibly poised and confident feel to the driver, with enough softness in the suspension that most road imperfections vanish. It's mostly splitting hairs here, but the standard i7 suspension felt a bit more magical in how it made bumps disappear.
The front and rear seats are also remarkably comfortable. Some of our drivers thought the i7's air vents didn't blow enough air for a given fan speed, but the cabin still cools or heats up quickly. You also get lots of options to split temperature and fan speed for different parts of the vehicle.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? The i7's luxurious interior experience starts from how you enter the sedan. As a feature of the available Executive package, automatic doors open with a quick press of a button from inside or out. And once you hop into the driver's seat and put your foot on the brake to turn the car on, the door will close by itself, automatically unleashing new avenues of laziness. Once inside, it's easy to find a perfect driving position. The i7 offers way more room than you'd ever need; even someone 6-foot-6 shouldn't have a problem sitting in either row.
Large windows give the i7 good visibility in most directions. The exception is the rear window, which is a little short. But that gets blocked off entirely if you lower the available 31-inch theater screen for backseat passengers. Thankfully, the i7's many camera views make getting around tight spaces even with the screen down much easier.

Technology
9/10
How’s the tech? Two screens come standard: a 12.3-inch instrument cluster display and a 14.9-inch horizontally oriented touchscreen for the infotainment. The touchscreen is canted slightly toward the driver, making it easier to reach, a necessity given how wide it is. Using this system takes some practice — there are a lot of menus, and it can be tricky to find what you're looking for and to set up the car to your liking. But thankfully, the voice recognition system understands many natural language commands and can be used to control many of the i7's functions.
Rear passengers get some cool technology features to play with, too. The available rear seat upgrades, such as for ventilation and massage, can be controlled by a small touchscreen mounted on each rear door. There's also an available 31-inch rear-seat entertainment screen with 8K resolution that drops down from the headliner. It's powered by Amazon Fire and requires a data plan from BMW for streaming, but there's also an HDMI plug for connecting a game console or a laptop if you'd rather use it that way.
Our test i7 also came with BMW's new Highway Assistant that allows hands-free driving up to 85 mph instead of 40 mph. The system works as advertised, keeping the i7 well centered in the lane and slowing down and accelerating smoothly.

Storage
7/10
How’s the storage? The i7's trunk is slightly smaller than the one in the gas-powered 7 Series, but it's enough to fit a few pieces of luggage or golf clubs with ease. There isn't any notable underfloor storage or a front trunk like you get with some other electric vehicles.
Interior storage is where the i7 struggles. There are minimal places to fit small items, with a tiny center console bin and not much more room to be found on the doors. There's not really a good place to store anything larger than a smartphone, so larger items will have to be left out or in the glovebox where they can't be easily reached.
Installing child safety seats in the i7 can be tough as well. The lower anchors are easy to access with a leather flap that you can lift up to expose the mounting points. But getting to the top LATCH anchors is cumbersome because you'll have to reach around the tall and wide headrests to access them.

Range and Efficiency
7.5/10
How economical is the i7 M70? Our 2024 i7 M70 test vehicle came equipped with the largest wheels the sedan offers at 21 inches. So equipped, it had an EPA-estimated range of 291 miles (versus 274 miles for the M70 with the smaller 20-inch wheels). It exceeded that estimate in the Edmunds EV Range Test, covering 312 miles on a full charge. That's a little less than the real-world results we've gotten from rival performance EVs (Tesla Model S Plaid or Porsche Taycan, for example) but is still pretty good. It's a similar story for efficiency; we measured an electricity consumption rate of 36.9 kWh for every 100 miles of driving.
The i7's architecture allows for fast charging up to 195 kW. That's comparable power to what the Mercedes EQS is capable of, though the Mercedes' superior efficiency means the i7 will take a few more minutes on average to add 100 miles of range.

Value
7.5/10
Is the i7 M70 a good value? The i7's cabin has excellent build quality and materials plus some innovative features that can't be found on other vehicles. But we don't think the M70 version delivers enough of a performance or luxury bump to justify the jump in price. Stick with the xDrive60 version for better overall value.
BMW's warranty is comparable with most luxury brands' coverage. Basic coverage lasts for four years/50,000 miles and the battery warranty runs eight years/100,000 miles. BMW provides complimentary maintenance for three years/36,000 miles, which is a plus, and three years of free fast charging (30-minute sessions at a time) on Electrify America's charging network.

Wildcard
8/10
The i7's appearance is really color-dependent. Dark colors do a better job of hiding the excessively large grilles and better integrate the dual light elements. Otherwise it just looks overly beefy and awkward from most angles. Once inside, none of that matters as its wondrous cabin takes the main stage.
Adding an M badge to any BMW comes with certain expectations. In the case of the i7 M70, our expectations were mostly unsatisfied save for the impressive straight-line speed it doles out with seemingly little effort. Yet the ride quality is among the best we've ever tested, and it moves with enough agility to make it fun to wheel around every day despite its size.

Which i7 does Edmunds recommend?
Because the thrillingly quick M70 xDrive costs significantly more than its siblings, we recommend the eDrive50 or xDrive60, depending on whether you want all-wheel drive. Several of the M70's features are available on them, and you can add plenty of luxury to either one.
BMW i7 models
The 2025 BMW i7 is a full-size electric luxury sedan offering 268 to 314 miles of range, depending on the model. Three versions are available, including the eDrive50, xDrive60 and M70 xDrive.
Each i7 has a 105.6-kWh battery pack. The eDrive50 features a single electric motor (449 horsepower, 479 lb-ft) powering the rear wheels with up to 314 miles of range. The xDrive60 has a dual-motor setup (536 horsepower, 549 lb-ft) juicing all four wheels and traveling up to 311 miles. The performance-oriented M70 xDrive also has a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system supplying 650 horsepower, 749 lb-ft, and up to 285 miles of range.
eDrive50
As expected, the BMW i7 has a long list of standard features. Selected highlights include:

xDrive60
Besides a more powerful dual-motor electric powertrain, the xDrive60 adds:
- 20-inch wheels with all-season tires
- Front and rear seats with massage
- Ventilated rear seats
M70 xDrive
BMW tunes the M70 xDrive for performance. Beyond added power, it features:

NOTE: This video is about the 2023 BMW i7, but since the 2025 BMW i7 is part of the same generation, our earlier analysis still applies.
Self-driving cars have been "on the horizon" seemingly forever, and while we still haven't bridged the gap to true autonomy, today's driving assist systems are more advanced than ever — and they're becoming increasingly common. In this video, Edmunds' Clint Simone and Brian Wong put four of the most powerful systems to the test: BMW's Driving Assistant Plus, GM's Super… Cruise, Ford's BlueCruise and, of course, Tesla's Full Self-Driving Beta.
