Good initial impressions after 4K miles

If you want to because it’s the sport sedan benchmark, it will deliver. However, the tech integration and active driving aids are impressive. For inputs to the infotainment, you can use voice, customizable buttons, steering wheel buttons and gesture control, which works well once you get good at performing gestures recognized by the system. You can use two fingers to point to the screen and customize that gesture for various functions. Similarly, you can open and close your hand twice and program it to set the nav to “home”. You can make a thumbs up sign but sideways with your thumb to the right to forward music to the next screen. You can do the same via steering wheel controls and view the music in the heads up display. The infotainment has a dizzying array of menus, and although they don’t appear intuitive, there is good logic and it becomes easier after a few days of use. The voice control works very well, but it’s quicker and easier to use programmable memory buttons for quick access to things you use most often. Or, even the gestures are faster than a short conversation with the virtual assistant. I named mine spongebob and it responds politely when I say “hey spongebob”. I don’t even have to wait to listen to its response to my request for attention. I can just overtalk and speak my request. Pretty spectacular so far

Disapointment, thy name is BMW

Review updated, 11/2019: With 13k miles on this car, the warts overwhelm the more positive aspects. Honestly, I'll never buy another BMW. Turbo lag is horrendous (I measured it at 2.3 sec hesitation before responding to a full throttle from stop.) The Nav unit keeps going out; the display just goes all white and is unreadable. It also has a significant lag in displaying the current position of the car, which has caused me to miss turnoffs from highways several times. The dealer couldn't fix either problem. Operation of the stereo is brain-dead. For example, you can't pick an artist, play one of their albums, and then pick another of their albums. You have to go back and do a full search each time you want to change what you're listening to! And the seats...look great but after a few hours in the saddle my back hurts. This became a serious issue when I drove the Lake Superior Circle Tour. By the third day, I dreaded getting back in the car. My prior BMW had great seats. I don't know what they did wrong, but these feel like they were designed by the Spanish Inquisition. After driving an E90 for over 100k miles, I was excited to get behind the wheel of a new 330i. After the new car glow wore off, I realized that the car was a significant step down from the older model. There are two problems with the car: 1.) Turbo lag at low speeds is pronounced. I just timed the car, and from a standing start in Sport mode, it takes 2 seconds to respond to full throttle (that is, before it moves an inch). This makes it just a bit dicey when pulling out onto a busy highway. 2.) It's handling is ponderous, kind of like steering a loaded pickup truck around a slalom course. This isn't a matter of steering feel; it's a question of the car just being too big and heavy to feel nimble. A sport sedan is supposed to be light on its feet, like a dancer; this one just keeps stepping on toes. Otherwise, the car is fine once it's up to speed and handles well on the highway. It's given me no problems, and runs reliably.

Great grunt, speed and 40 + MPG. This car does it all. BMW quality, handles tight and zips. AWD is seamless and grippy. Love that fuel economy.
