Used 1998 Audi A4 Sedan Consumer Reviews
not bad, not great
I also dreamed about an A4 for years before getting my 98 A4Q Tiptronic. The quattro is awesome in the snow. But the entire transmission was replaced at 22k mi (under warranty fortunately) and dealer could not explain why. Plus few other misc repairs. Now it's out of warranty, I think I'll get something more reliable. This is a great looking, fun car to drive with a lively engine. But it's not as reliable as my old Audi 90.
1998 AUDI Quattro, 2.8
This is my fourth Audi. It is not as dependable as the other three, with small maintenence problems.

Audi A4 1.8L quattro
We live in snow country with 200 average inches per year so whatever car we bought had to have all wheel drive. No SUVs allowed--I'm a sports car fan. The choice was between Suburu and Audi and we did not make a mistake. Even though we are 250 miles from our dealer we have made the scheduled service dates and they have treated us well.
Excellent Car
I love my A4. Got it for $11,000 a year ago. Just throw a APR chip in it and it's a blast to drive. Now it's got 200 Hp / 240 lb feet of torque & still gets 30 MPG. Excellent used car to buy. Be sure to do the timing belt before 75K & let the car run for a minute or two to cool the turbo before turning it off. These cars hold up great, still nice and tight with 80K on the odometer. Just change the oil, spend a little extra for mobil 1.
Born to drive
I bought my 98 A4 2.8Q in august of 2001. It had 70k miles on it. Since, I have put 22k miles on the car and have not had 1 single problem with anything mechanical or electrical. The build quality of this car is superb. With almost 100k miles the car doesn' creak or moan anywhere, it is solid as can be. Very impressive for almost 100k miles, but that is why it is an Audi.
