Bought (first hand) a 2001 Toyota Sienna XLE (v6). First couple of years were fine. Noticed around 2007-2008 that every trip that involves the highway will result in the oil to vanish as the Oil light will turn on. I ignored the issue at first as a mechanic indicated there was no leak. I simply put more oil and things were fine up to the next trip. I then noticed that ... Read More
Last winter I purchased a 2008 CPO Sienna. In another thread somewhere on this board I went thru all the financials on the transaction. The CPO plan basic warranty adds (last time I looked) a year and 12k miles to the bumper to bumper (so I guess that would take you to 44k miles), plus 7/100k on the powertrain. If they are advertising the van as CPO, they may have already ... Read More
Hi. Did you ever get the name of the dealer that had the resolution to this problem? My wife's car started this today and I want to resolve this under warranty ASAP. Thanks!
I have the similar modification but my modification was by Braun now bought out by IMS?. I afraid they have a monopoly so you really can not negotiate. The one thing I did purchase for my 2008 Sienna Van is extended warranty. When my navigational went out, it did not cost me $2,100 since I had an extended warranty. I check on the warranty for the modifications and it was too ... Read More
Thank you very much for the info. This makes a lot more sense. I'm glad you followed up on your dilemma. That's crazy that your van started doing this with only 4,000 miles! Any chance I can get you to note the Name of the Toyota Dealership that ultimately fixed your problem? I'm dealing with the Toyota Dealership Don McGill in Houston, Texas. The service manager keeps trying to tell me ... Read More
It took many visits to get my issue resolved with the starting issues, cranking over numerous times before starting, it ended up being the fuel injectors, since they have been changed out no issues. The way it was explained to me, there is a ball type check valve in each injector and these were not closing off, this allowed the fuel to drain off. During cold starts the engine would be ... No, the problem has not be resolved. I do not believe it's a fuel evaporation issue because it will start just fine -after it has been turned off and restarted within 1-20 minutes. The long start issue occurred sporatically at first, but it now does it several times a day every day. Problem occurs regardless if it just idles or has been driven. The problem is when I start the engine. ... Read More
Has this problem been resolved? I am having identical issues with a 2004 Sienna. I cleaned the throttle body which was pretty grungy. Did not help. I believe excess fuel is sitting in the engine on startup. If you wait long enough, the fuel will evaporate. This not a fix but try cracking the accelerator pedal a bit to get more air in the engine. Seems to start a little quicker. ... Read More
------mcloutier, as you mentioned My 2008 Sienna is having the identical excessive cranking issues and everything else you described. No codes are coming up and the dealership I took it to shows no TSB or tips to correct the issue. Can I please have the name of the dealership that ultimately took care of the problem, so my dealership can contact them for proof of this problem and repair advise. Thx ... Read More
Accepted! Sorry to hear that you are still having difficulties with the van.
I'm not yelling, really. :-) Just confused. I apologize.
Reread my post. It clearly says "Replying to: Brandybrindy" and they said that since this was an XLE it wasn't included in the recall because we don't have a spare tire well. This just show how wrong they can be. Unless you changed your name, you are yelling at the wrong guy. You might look back a few posts and remember that I provided you with a lot of information early ... Read More
Who do you think misunderstands? Me (the original poster) or the guy who just said he has AWD? My van is not AWD, I have a spare tire. I have paper work stating the faulty floor seals caused the leak - they fixed the floor seals, they replaced the carpet, the leak continued. In the end the leak was so obvious I don't know how they missed it. I feel stupid ... Read More
I think you misunderstood some of what the dealership said to you. Because you have an AWD van, you don't have a spare tire. There was a recall for a cabling system & hoist corrosion problem that some thought was related to how water might get into the interior. That hoist apparatus mounts under the right hand second row seat - but only on FWD models.
Wow corporate Toyota never even gave me a case manager. They gave me a claim number and then I never heard anything until I called them back 2 weeks later - and they just told me to call the dealer. Unhappy Toyota owner!!!
Hi: My husband and I purchased a certified 2008 Toyota Sienna XLE AWD in April 2011. About two weeks ago we noticed that under the third row seat the rug was wet. We contacted Toyota directly and was given a claim number and a case manager. The case manager instructed us to bring the car back to the dealer. The dealer couldn't find a leak so they hired another company that ... Read More
The stock sizes used on these vans vary from 27" to 27.6". Your carry-over size has a 28.5" diameter. That is a bit tall for these wheel wells, although it might fit if centered correctly. I think a lot depends on what wheels these will be mounted on. I too am carrying over winter wheels and tires from my old Honda Odyssey to a 2008 Sienna I bought this year. While ... Read More
Update to say after the carpet was replaced it started leaking again. Called another dealer who referred us to a guy called the water doctor. Month later, water again, starting to smell - he came back, carpet was SOAKED, found one ... Read More
I agree, there is a distinct premium for Toyota and Honda (overall, but especially for minivans!) BUT if I understand the concept behind TMV correctly, it is based on actual sales receipts and tax receipts, and NOT on some kind of "formula" -- such as if a car cost "X" new, it depreciates exactly "X" amount in four years, etc. If this is so, then TMV should adjust easily for brands ... I had a sliding door problem with my 2008 Sienna. After reading about everyone's problems, I was nervous to take it in. The service advisor at the dealership suggested that I call Toyota Corp and state my ... Read More

There is also a NHTSA complaint (http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f10787b/56) I brought. For some reason they said they weren't aware of these complaints. $20k is pretty tough to get into a reasonable mileage Honda/Toyota IMHO. We sold our '05 Odyssey with 100k miles back in Feb for $16k. Stupid money in my book...but I'm not complaining. What is the real bottom price for brand new 2011 Toyota Sienna LE in north Chicago area? I am ready to buy this month. So far I have $28,984 - $1000 rebate - $750 dealer cashback = $27,148 + tax, license and doc fees. My friend purchased brand new 2008 Sienna LE in Jan 2008 for 24,400. Why is the delta in price so high now? almost 3000 more.
I'm glad I checked this site. We have a 2008 XLE with 50,000 miles and the passenger sliding door cable snapped ($529 for the cable plus the same amount in labor charges). You posted this in a thread on radiator issues, so I'm not sure if there is some connection here. Did you actually jump start the engine with the battery cables reversed? If so, that is certainly not good for much of the electronics. Some are probably protected from reverse bias, some probably not. There is also (on many cars) a master fuse that sometimes goes with accidental reversal, but if the ... Read More

I need your advise. I have a 1998 Sienna with 235,000 miles and it has been very good car for us. There is a 2.5 inch long crack at the top of radiator and I was wondering whether to repair it or replace it. I certainly do not want to spend $479. Some one offer me $150 for new radiator ,and $60 for labor to install. What should I do?
I've tried to find an answer to this - but I'm either coming up with mystery leaks or references to a 2011 recall, nothing concrete. I am seriously about to lose my flipping mind over my van. I'll try to make a long story short. Last summer I had the van open in the driveway to vacuum it out. My son was aiming a squirt gun at the back of the ... Read More

I'm no expert on how to price used cars, but this is my recent experience looking in the NY metropolitan area. Each market is different, to adjust accordingly. Last weekend I purchased a 2008 Sienna LE, excellent outward appearance (drives like new) with 20,058 miles on the clock & still under original factory warranty for another few weeks, from a dealer on Long Island (about 90+ miles from home). Dealers in the Bay Area are crazy in what they try to ask for late model used Siennas. When I was shopping in 2008 for ours I checked around on used vans before going with a new. at least Korean cars have 10yrs warranty The powertrain warranty would not cover the door cable. A 2004 Kia's B2B warranty would have expired in 2008 or 2009, depending upon when you bought it. You may want to consider an extended warranty, just make sure it covers your door.
Definitely not normal...I haven't heard of any radiator replacements on 07+ models at all, and your miles are low. No sympathy from the dealer? Or call Toyota's 800 number for customer service. That's crazy, a $1000 radiator repair for a 3 year old van? Ask the dealer if you can buy an extended warranty retroactively and then have that included somehow. We got a 2008 Sienna when expecting our third. The full size eighth seat with the front and center placement is very nice for carrying an infant in the van. Maybe I'm weird but I think the Ody the showed off recently is the best of the Toyo/Honda designs and that the Chrysler/Dodge/VW van is the best looking exterior(my appreciation for the Chrysler ends there though). V6s tend to be quiet. The timing chain actually makes the 2GR (3.5l in 2007+ Siennas) engine louder than the prior 3MZ (3.3l V6 MY2004-2006), but Toyota added insulation to the firewall and door sills to make up for the extra noise.

Miles are high but it is a Toyota and hopefully the rental agency followed a prescribed maintenance program. In the "2008 Minivans" thread, 2 years ago or so, he said it himself: I agree that the Odyssey is the MOST expensive and the Sienna has the MOST power at the lowest price That's a direct quote, straight from the horse's mouth. You can't spin that, no way no how. He even put it in CAPS, feeling the need to shout it. Sure an LE lacks dual climate control, but ... Read More
You and "johnsienna" give a very accurate description of the transmission hesitation. This is definitely a problem with the 08. I also owned an 04 Sienna and did not have this problem. This hesitation has become much more noticeable after we reached 20-25k miles. It is intermittent but very noticeable. The dealer said they can not do anything unless there is a TSB. I am adjusting my driving to anticipate when ... Read More
The hesitation coming off of corners is a design issue with the transmission (if it were Microsoft they'd call it a 'feature'). Every Sienna has it and it is not a defective part so the dealer cannot do anything for you. Toyota may re-engineer it in some future model, but don't expect to get the upgrade. I can reproduce it every time I want to in my van with a hard ... Read More
Hi there - I've experience the exact same issue with my 2008 Toyota Sienna. The hesitation in shifting at low speeds when accellerating after slowing down to turn a corner occurs intermittently but is quite noticeable. According to those in the know, this issue is absolutely linked to the "drive by wire' system, or as the service manager likes to say "it's a characteristic of the vehicle" . My mechanic friend ... Hi John, I first read your post in the spring of 2009 because I was experiencing exactly the same thing with my 2008 Toyota Sienna. The hesitation in shifting at low speeds when accelerating after slowing down to turn a corner occurs intermittently but is quite noticeable. I've been back to the dealer several times, have been in touch with Toyota Canada - (last contact was in May 2009 and still ... Read More
For the benefit of anyone who encounters this same issue, they finally brought in a specialized technician from Toyota, who authorized the replacement of the 6 fuel injectors (on warranty) and bingo, the problem is solved! After 6-7 visits to the Toyota dealership and a lot of time lost...
We had a similar problem with our 2008 XLE. I suspect the problem is that sometimes the sliding doors don't go all the way back and lock / engage. When I disable the automatic doors and manually slide the doors back, they sometimes "click" into place. Other times they seem to just hit some barrier and stop (and can slide forward without engaging the handle). With the automatic doors enabled, it ... Read More
Independently owned dealers set pricing for service, not Toyota. Everyone knows that. Manufacturers set pricing on the vans, though, and here's what you had to say 2 years ago in the "2008 Minivans" thread: I agree that the Odyssey is the MOST expensive and the Sienna has the MOST power at the lowest price That's quoting you, hans. :P
Thanks for the detailed info. Usually I buy a Consumer's Guide book each model year, but my most recent one is 2008. It's late for an 09 so I'll probably wait until the 2010 model year edition comes out. I like the format they use - makes it easy to see what you get with each model. They will list the LX, then they list the EX and say "EX adds: ... Read More
