Our 1999 RX 300 failed with 93,000 miles on it in May 2010. We have 107000 on it and it is still going. We received $1800 check to cover parts from Lexus which went against our total bill of $5500. Good Luck to you.
The transmission on our 2001 Lexus RX300 with only 83,000 and fully serviced at Lexus just failed. I spoke with a service technicians at the Lexus dealer, and off the record, he informed me that the problem is rampant and its quite rare for a transmission not to fail on this model year and the 1999 and 2000 RX 300, even if the mileage is very low and fully serviced at ... I bought my 2001 Lexus RX 300 brand new. At the time of purchased, the original set was Goodyear Integrity. The original set last 53,000 miles. I was so please that I purchased another set for the same vehicle. Right now, I am on my third set. The vehicle currently has 107,000 miles. I think I will still with Goodyear Integrity for forever.
Don't. RX300 2001 or later expect a transaxle failure sub-100,000 miles even if the ATF is drained/flushed every 15,000 miles. RX330 model or better, DBW to "protect the drive train", alleviate the issue of premature transaxle failures. With DBW expect to randomly encounter, at the worse of all possible times, a 1-2 second re-acceleration "downshift" delay/hesitation. 2010 RX or later if you have true need for AWD functionality. Previous RX AWD ... Read More

I have a 2001 RX. 1) When I lower my front passenger window a little at train crossings, then try to close it, it will go down more before I can make it go up. Once it went down all the way & wouldn't go up for about 10 minutes - of course it was pouring rain. Haven't tried to use it since 2) My key will sometimes unlock/lock the driver's ... Read More
I don't see the pics and if you are thinking about your CarSpace photo album, well, all that stuff is gone. There's this post but the link to the instructions is "temporarily unavailable". You can use the "Advanced Search" on the right sidebar. Plus, a search like "la4mead external cooler site:edmunds.com" will work on Bing or Google.
I posted some pics a few years ago (are the searchable messages archived on this forum?). I'll look around or take some new ones. It was pretty straightforward, however I did have to improvise a little. I'll get something together and post it.
By the Way anybody have these problems with a 2001 Lexus RX 300AWD? 1) A power window that goes up and down only sometimes. Usually a swift hit to the door may make it work 2) The Key remote locks and unlocks all doors but the passenger door 3) The fan in the dash at times makes noise like its rubbing against something and then goes away. OMG... my 2001 RX ... Read More
Hello, thanks for the information. Is there a step-by-step instruction on how to install the additional fan or cooler on the existed cooler? Pictures are great, thanks.
Re the cooler: "...Lexus had already come to realize, due to the HIGH failure rate in the '99 & '00 models, that the RX300 transaxle, modified Camry transaxle, was the weak link in the RX300 design. No, my "glass" is most certainly closer to FULL than otherwise...!
In reality the external cooler is a component of the towing "package", not the AWD system itself. But purely by default you are RIGHT. Lexus had already come to realize, due to the HIGH failure rate in the '99 & '00 models, that the RX300 transaxle, modified Camry transaxle, was the weak link in the RX300 design. BTW, you actually have the external cooler, which is a standard equipment for 01 AWD. Check your front passenger side.
I didn't went to dealer, because I think they would charge me money on inspection, and because I rarely service my car at dealer, so they would probably refuse any help. I prefer to install a long warranty one, in the long run.
Mine is a 2001 RX300 Silversport AWD. I couldn't find any info on changing the tranny fluid in the manual. My husband was changing the tranny fluid when it said on the tranny dip stick that it never needed to be changed. I called the Lexus dealership they said it should be changed at 60,000 and 120,000. Makes you wonder if they say that to get more business. Also my husband changed ... Read More
Well I got my update today on the 2001 Lexus Post # 605. I went to an independent transmission shop who is very well thought of in our city. Sounds familiar. I just had the same episode and $4100 repair on my son's 2001. The transmission repair shop found it nearly disintegrated inside with metal throughout the cooler. Transmission went yesterday, fortunately it was in my driveway. Car was bought new in June of 2001 and was babied, never towed anything, had 88,000 miles, serviced regularly, transmission serviced at 30,000 and 60,000 miles. Also does anyone have any information on how to get Lexus to contribute to the cost of repairs?
Let me guess, you had AWD. The RX 300 transmission was not designed for AWD. Sue Lexus for their fraud motto, "Relentless Pursuit of Excellence."
RX 300 Transmission is junk. They all seem to fail at 105,000 miles. Our family has had two RX 300 and both transmissions failed. These cars were driven like kittens no towing or teenage drivers. Lexus quality has gone way down hill. I will never buy another Lexus and I have owned seven and bought the first LS 400 in 1990.
I'll bet you any money within the next 30 days your transmission will be gone. These transmissions on the 2000 and 2001 RX 300 were designed poorly and should have been recalled. We had two in the family and both transmissions went out at the same mileage 108,000. Never towed anything, no teenage drivers. Driven like a cupcake.
Got my rx from a private party 6 mo ago. Perfect condition at 131K and drove smoothly for all those months. I am not sure if this will help, but my sister just purchased a 2001 RX (AWD, Blue Vapor w/ black interior, Nav, wood steering wheel, basically all the goodies except for chrome wheels and gold kit) for $38,649. This came out to $800 over invoice. Then we got an additional $500 off d/t the lexus loyalty rebate. This salesperson said she'd basically go $800 over invoice for any RX w/ ... Read More

Just traded my GS400 for a new 2001 Lexus RX 300. Love the vehicle except for noises in the roof.Has anyone noticed in the front of the closed sunroof a tendency to hear wind sounds when radio is off? My Navigator doesn't do this nor did the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Also occasionally when the sun is out and car is hot and first driven I hear a clicking or popping like ... Read More
Sounds like you did your homework and things turned out great. I'm glad you and your wife found a vehicle that suits your needs. Just as an FYI, I called Lexus Corporate about a month ago regarding the factory tires. The 2001 Rex only comes from the factory with either the Goodyears or Bridgestones, and get this: there's no way to tell which ones! Yup, they said they put both on ... Read More
I have never written into a discussion group in the past, but I've been an avid follower of this board for 5 months. I want to thank everyone for their invaluable input and education, especially Tonychrys. Please excuse me if I get a little wordy. I purchased a 2001 RX300 AWD w/o Nav, but fully loaded ($40,601 list after pkg. discount) in March. My wife and I are extremely pleased with ... Read More
I̵ I am a delighted owner of an Indigo Ink Pearl 2001 AWD RX 300! Picked it up on May 25th from Pohanka Lexus in Chantilly VA. It has: Premium Package Plus, Ivory Leather Interior, Spoiler, Cargo Mat, Cargo Net, Wood Steering Wheel and Shift Knob, AM/FM/Cassette/6 Disc CD Changer, Roof Rack and Heated Seats. Question for someone. Is $37,800 (EXCLUDING tax, tags, etc.) reasonable for the DC/MD/N. VA area?
Yesterday I took delivery of my 2001 RX 300 from Butler Lexus (Macon). This is the least amount of time I have ever spent at a dealership buying a car. Mitch Harris (sales) had all my info taken before on the phone. All docs & the car was ready. It literally took me 15 minutes to finish everything. They did not try to push me to buy anything else I did ... Read More
