CHANTILLY, Virginia — In one of the most feel-good auto restoration projects of the year, Mazda dealers on Tuesday presented Washington Redskins running back Alfred Morris with a spruced-up 1991 Mazda 626.

The car, dubbed "Bentley," was brought back to "factory new" condition. The story grabbed headlines because Morris depended on the modest car as his daily driver in an age when pro athletes typically buy Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Mazda called it "bucking convention." According to media reports, the starting running back purchased the car from his pastor for just $2.

The handover of the restored vehicle was a major media event, complete with a sheet-covered car and camera crews.

Morris contributed to the hype, tweeting ahead of the event: "Haven't had my baby all season. ‪@MazdaUSA‬ gives her back tomorrow. Just might be our good luck charm ‪#Mazda‬ ‪#626Love‬."

While his car was in the shop, Morris drove a "loaner" 2014 Mazda 6.

Washington D.C.-area Mazda dealers refurbished the car over the past several months, overhauling the engine and adding new brakes and an exhaust system. A dent in the back right side was bumped out. The expired sticker from Morris' final year at Florida Atlantic University was left on the windshield, but upscale touches were added to the cabin. They include quilted leather seats and a Pioneer audio system.

No price tag was put on the project.

Edmunds says: Mazda dealers embark on a goodwill project for a special owner who seems thrilled with the result.

Not every athlete feels required to flash their income so I can appreciate Mr. Morris modest transportation, and since I have him on my fantasy team, I hope this helps with another 100 yrd game. I remember when Barry Sanders always drove his Honda Accord to work instead of a high priced import.

I would have been much more impressed if this dealership had done the same to a truly needy family than this overpaid joker. BFD
