WASHINGTON — Chrysler on Tuesday announced it is recalling more than 250,000 cars and trucks to fix several problems, including a defect that could cause the driveshaft to break on 2007-'08 Dodge Nitro and 2008 Jeep Liberty SUVs.

Chrysler is recalling approximately 78,500 2007-'08 Dodge Nitros and 2008 Jeep Liberty 4x2 vehicles for a tunnel shield problem that could result in driveshaft breakage.

"The transfer case heat shield may drop down and rub on the driveshaft, weakening it and potentially causing the driveshaft to break," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "If the driveshaft breaks, a section of it can strike the transfer case tunnel with enough force that the airbag computer will believe the vehicle is in a crash and thus deploy the airbags. Additionally, the driveshaft failure will result in a loss of motive power. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash."

Chrysler said it is unaware of any collisions or injuries associated with the defect.

Dealers will add a bracket to support the rear of the heat shield. The recall is expected to begin in May.

Chrysler will also recall approximately 7,000 2013 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups to replace their engine covers. The automaker said almost all of the affected pickups are in dealer hands.

"Routine, post-production testing revealed a cover for the 6.7L diesel engine was found to have less heat resistance than intended," Chrysler said. "The cover is being replaced by one with an alternate design."

Chrysler said it is unaware of any injuries, accidents or customer complaints associated with the recall.

The recall is expected to begin in May.

Chrysler is also recalling approximately 30,000 2012 Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass vehicles for a fuel-tank transfer tube problem.

"Due to an incorrectly manufactured transfer tube, the transfer of fuel from the secondary side to the primary side of the fuel tank may be interrupted, causing the engine to stall," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "If the engine stalls while driving, it may increase the risk of a crash."

Chrysler said it is aware of one related accident, but no injuries.

Dealers will replace the fuel tank transfer tube. The recall is expected to begin in May.

Chrysler will also recall approximately 139,000 2011-'12 Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger vehicles because the airbags may not operate as designed, according to NHTSA.

"The affected vehicles may have improperly sized terminal crimps on the seat side airbag wiring harness which may cause the seat side airbags to malfunction and illuminate the airbag warning light," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "In the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, the airbags may not operate as designed, increasing the risk of injury."

Dealers will replace the driver and passenger seat airbag wiring harness.

The recall is expected to begin in April.

Chrysler will also recall 52 2013 Dodge Darts for brake calipers that do not meet specification. The brake calipers will be replaced. Chrysler said it is unaware of any injuries, accidents or customer complaints linked to the recall.

Edmunds says: Consumers with questions about these recalls should call Chrysler's customer service department at 1-800-247-9753.
