LOS ANGELES — Chrysler and Carhartt, the maker of work clothes, have hooked up to launch a Detroit-inspired clothing collection.

The limited-edition line, which includes a "mechanic shirt" and knit skull cap, debuted on Tuesday at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The apparel line is to be sold with the "Imported from Detroit" tagline from Chrysler's 2011 Super Bowl commercial.

The collection is individually hand-numbered from 1 to 200, Chrysler said in a statement.

It is a radical switch from Carhartt's humble roots. The company was set up in 1889 by Hamilton Carhartt. It originally focused on making jackets and overalls for railroad workers. Pricing has not been announced on the new Chrysler and Carhartt line.

The line features blacked-out hardware and leather brand labels. The companies issued several images of the clothing, with gritty downtown Detroit as a backdrop.

Chrysler launched its own retail Web site for clothing branded with "Imported from Detroit" shortly after the 2011 Super Bowl and the success of its commercial featuring the rapper Eminem.

Edmunds says: Chrysler continues to develop its own grunge look with the help of Carhartt.
