DETROIT — The Audi showcar, a compact crossover that may preview the Audi Q1, will debut in January at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Earlier this week, Audi AG confirmed the Q1 for production starting in 2016. But Audi of America told Edmunds that it was unsure whether the Q1 would be sold in the U.S.

Audi describes the unnamed, two-door showcar as having a "shooting brake" body style. "It combines a host of visual elements from future sports car models with the Audi-typical allroad concept and independent 'Shooting Brake' body form," Audi said in a statement.

At 14 feet in length, it is smaller than the Audi Q3, the German automaker's smallest SUV. Audi E-tron and Quattro badging is visible in the four sketches of the showcar released by Audi on Thursday. This suggests that the concept will have four-wheel drive and be powered by an electric or hybrid drivetrain.

The showcar also features cues from the Audi Sport Quattro and Audi Nanuk vehicles. Other details include an aluminum underbody guard at the front and rear and arrow-shaped headlights.

The cabin gets a flat-bottom steering wheel.

Edmunds says: Audi appears to be gunning for the Nissan Juke and Mini Paceman.
