FRANKFURT, Germany — The all-wheel-drive 2015 BMW i8's technical specifications have been released ahead of the plug-in hybrid sports car's debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The i8 is the second model in the German automaker's electric-drive i lineup. The 2+2 model is set to arrive in showrooms in early 2014 with an eye on targeting the Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS E-Cell.

BMW describes the i8 as providing "an unprecedented balance between performance and fuel consumption."

While BMW released many critical details about the i8, it has not disclosed U.S. pricing. The car is expected to start around $120,000. BMW said the i8 is expected to return approximately 95 mpg in the U.S. The EPA has not released official fuel economy estimates on the BMW i8.

BMW notes that the i8's plug-in hybrid system is "specific to this model" and that this is the first BMW production model to be powered by a three-cylinder gas engine. BMW said the car can be recharged at a standard household outlet in less than three hours and less than two hours at a BMW i Wallbox.

The eco-friendly i8 sports car can be driven in all-electric mode for approximately 22 miles at a top speed of 75 mph, said BMW.

The 2015 BMW i8 is equipped with a turbocharged inline 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery with a maximum output of 362 horsepower. The gas engine drives the rear wheels, while the electric motor drives the front wheels. The rear wheels of the i8 are driven by the gas engine via a six-speed automatic transmission; the front wheels are driven by the electric motor via an integrated two-stage automatic transmission. The two combine to provide an all-wheel-drive setup.

The i8 can accelerate from zero-62 mph in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph.

BMW describes the i8 as having sports-car proportions. It is 15.4 feet in length and has a curb weight of 3,285 pounds. Other details include a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic passenger cell and the use of chemically hardened glass that is similar to that used in smartphones.

The curious may have to wait until the Frankfurt auto show to get a look at the interior of the BMW i8.
