CYPRESS, California — The new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage subcompact hatchback starts at $13,790, including a $795 destination charge, Mitsubishi Motors North America announced on Monday. The Mirage goes on sale here at the end of September.

The top-of-the-line Mitsubishi Mirage ES with a navigation package starts at $16,890, including shipping.

The base 2014 Mirage DE includes standard automatic climate control, keyless entry with panic alarm, a rear spoiler, piano black center console trim, auto-off halogen headlights and rear heater floor ducts. The base model is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission. All models are equipped with the 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine.

The uplevel Mirage ES adds a number of items, including Bluetooth, 14-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and silver interior accent trim.

Mitsubishi says the Mirage is EPA-rated at 37 mpg in city driving and 44 mpg on the highway.

The 2014 Mirage undercuts two of its chief rivals, the 2014 Ford Fiesta hatchback and the 2014 Nissan Versa Note hatchback.

The 2014 Ford Fiesta hatchback starts at $15,395, including a $795 destination charge.

The 2014 Nissan Versa Note hatchback starts at $14,800, including an $810 destination charge.

However, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark hatchback undercuts the Mirage by $795.

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark starts at $12,995, including an $825 destination charge.

Edmunds says: The affordable price tag and the Mirage's impressive fuel-economy rating may make it a compelling new entry for consumers shopping in this segment.

    Beats the heck out of a Smart Car, that's for certain. I don't believe I have ever seen a Mitsubishi Mirage on the road. If I do, it might just be a Mirage.
