- Infiniti will continue to sell the G37 as an entry-level model that will slot below the new Q50.
- The 2014 G37 is aimed at lower-priced versions of European competitors including the Audi A3 sedan, BMW 320i and Mercedes CLA.
- An Infiniti spokesman says it has not yet been determined if the G37 will continue beyond its one-year reprieve.
Earlier this year Infiniti announced a new naming strategy that effectively replaces the G37 with the all-new Q50. The new sedan will be offered with either a 328-horsepower 3.7-liter engine or as the uplevel 360-hp Q50 Hybrid.
Now Infiniti tells Edmunds that the G37 will continue for at least another year. It will be positioned as an entry-level model priced to challenge European competitors like the Audi A3 sedan, BMW 320i and Mercedes CLA.
Infiniti says this wasn't the original plan, but the Q50 is a dramatic step up from the current G, one that opens up some space for a lower-priced G37.
Edmunds says: The onslaught of lower-priced European sedans forced Infiniti to rethink its model lineup. Carrying over the well-regarded G37 is a good plan until the Q50 can establish itself as a known commodity.
