DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2014 Ford Fiesta SE with the Super Fuel Economy package achieves 41 mpg on the highway, the automaker said on Wednesday.

Fuel economy is "often cited as the No. 1 reason for purchase consideration in the subcompact class," said Ford.

The 41-mpg highway rating puts the Fiesta SE with the special package ahead of the competition, including the 2013 Hyundai Accent and Chevrolet Sonic.

The 2013 Hyundai Accent with the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission returns 28 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 2013 Chevrolet Sonic with the 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission returns 27 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The EPA has not yet posted official fuel economy numbers on the Fiesta SE with the Super Fuel Economy package. It says the 2014 Fiesta without the package and equipped with the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission returns 29 mpg in city driving and 39 mpg on the highway.

Fuel economy is a critical factor in this class, especially as fuel prices hover near the $4-a-gallon mark. The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report on Wednesday pegged the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline at $3.63 versus $3.54 a year ago.

The Fiesta's SFE package adds a rear spoiler, side air deflectors, underbody shields, lower grille blockers, low-rolling-resistance tires and cruise control.

"Together, these features decrease the amount of fuel needed to push the car through the air at speed," said Ford.

Edmunds says: What we're still waiting to hear is how fuel-efficient the 2014 Ford Fiesta with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will be.
