GAYDON, England — The 2014 Aston Martin Rapide S, which debuted on Tuesday, will start around $200,000 when it arrives in U.S. showrooms in May, an Aston Martin source told Edmunds.

The price reflects an approximately $12,000 decrease from the price of the 2013 Aston Martin Rapide, which the Rapide S replaces. The 2013 Aston Martin Rapide starts at $212,110, including a $2,115 destination charge and a $2,100 gas-guzzler tax. Formal pricing on the 2014 Rapide S will be released closer to the car's launch date.

According to the Aston Martin source, the price cut reflects changes in the exchange rate and market conditions.

The new pricing strategy squarely positions the 2014 Rapide S between two of its chief competitors, the 2013 Porsche Panamera and the 2013 Maserati Quattroporte.

The base 2013 Porsche Panamera starts at $76,825, including a $975 destination charge, and the base 2013 Maserati Quattroporte starts at $129,250, including a $1,500 destination charge.

The Rapide S is the most powerful Aston Martin sedan to date, the company said in a statement. Peak output jumps 17 percent as the new 6.0-liter V12 engine in the Rapide S produces 550 horsepower. The engine is linked to a six-speed Touchtronic 2 transmission.

U.S. fuel economy estimates on the Rapide S were not available, but the company expects the car to show a significant improvement in fuel economy due to the new-generation engine. The 2012 Aston Martin Rapide with the 5.9-liter V12 engine returns 13 mpg in city driving and 19 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

With a top speed of 190 mph, the 2014 Rapide S sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

The Rapide S gets a new "face," courtesy of a new grille, along with 20-inch silver-painted alloy wheels.

A full leather interior, walnut trim and a leather sport steering wheel outfit the cabin.

Options include a carbon exterior pack, personalized sill plaques and red-and-black leather upholstery.

Edmunds says: The 2014 Aston Martin Rapide S gets sportier and more affordable — at least in some households.
