SAN FRANCISCO — The 2013 Hyundai Veloster Zombie Survival machine, complete with machete holders, front bumper-mounted chainsaws and flamethrowers, will debut at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 17.
The one-off Veloster Zombie Survival machine also includes a roof-mounted rail gun that shoots projectiles with an electromagnet and sandbags mounted on the hood. The headlights are protected from attack by wrought-iron cages.
This is the second Hyundai zombie fighter. An armor-plated 2012 Hyundai Elantra Zombie Survival machine stole the show at nearly every auto event it was displayed at last year.
"It was so successful because the world is in love with zombies," said Miles Johnson, a Hyundai spokesman, in a phone conversation on Tuesday with Edmunds.
Official photos of the Veloster Zombie Survival machine have not been released, but Rob Lescaille, a Hyundai spokesman, provided Edmunds with an iPhone photo of a rendering of the vehicle. He also listed some of the details of the car from an internal Hyundai document. For instance, the machete holders are mounted on either side of the seats and replace conventional cupholders.
The vehicle will be displayed at the Future US booth at Comic-Con next month. The custom Veloster is still being developed by Galpin Auto Sports, a car fabrication shop. Robert Kirkman, the creator and writer of The Walking Dead, also had a hand in the development of the Veloster.
WalkingDeadChopShop.com, a unique configurator app, will allow participants at the San Diego show to design their own custom digital zombie survival machine on the show floor. The submitted designs will be entered into a contest and the winning design will be constructed and unveiled at the New York Comic-Con in October.
Zombies have become a key part of popular culture. A recently released movie, World War Z, features actor Brad Pitt in a race against a zombie pandemic that threatens to destroy humanity.
Edmunds says: The 2013 Hyundai Veloster Zombie Survival machine promises to be an awesome PR machine, just like its predecessor.
