WASHINGTON — The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has opened an investigation into 64,117 2011-'13 Kia Sorento crossovers after receiving 15 consumer complaints alleging that the optional sunroof shattered unexpectedly.

"Of these complaints, 13 occurred while the vehicle was in motion," said NHTSA in its summary of the investigation. "One injury was reported where the complainant suffered minor cuts from the shattered glass.

"Glass shattering while driving could distract the driver and the resulting glass particles could injure occupants."

Federal safety regulators say they have received "early warning" field report data from Kia regarding the alleged problem.

Kia Motors America did not respond immediately to an Edmunds query asking for comment about the probe.

Federal safety regulators have opened a preliminary evaluation into the matter. Such an action sometimes precedes a vehicle recall.

Edmunds says: The 2011-'13 Kia Sorento has not been recalled at this point. If the glass in your Sorento's sunroof shatters, take it into the dealership immediately.
