Hyundai Sonata: Edmunds.com Most Considered Five Weeks Running
By Michelle Krebs April 16, 2010The 2011 Hyundai Sonata retained its ownership of the top spot among vehicles most
considered by shoppers on Edmunds.com for the fifth consecutive week.
In the past two weeks, the Hyundai Sonata widened the margin between it and other most considered vehicles, specifically the Honda Accord and Honda Civic.
In the most recent week for which Edmunds.com shopping data is available, the Hyundai Tucson, also recently redesigned, soared to the No. 2 spot from No. 4, in part because of extra marketing on the vehicle on the site.
Weekly consideration data looks at how consumers are shopping for more than 400 models on Edmunds.com. Consideration data indicates the effectiveness of a marketing campaign and may suggest future sales.
The Sonata, Tucson and, on occasion, the Hyundai Genesis, charged into the top 10 of most shopped vehicles list on Edmunds.com a number of times in the first quarter. In fact, the first quarter of 2010 marked the first time ever that a Hyundai model captured the No. 1 spot on the most shopped list since Edmunds.com began tracking shopping consideration data in 2007.
Hyundai is doing a good job of marketing, which is driving shopping consideration, but also converting consideration to sales. In March, Hyundai sold 18,935 Sonata models, a 54-percent percent increase from the 12,406 sold a year earlier, putting it in the same volume territory as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, which are perenially the best-selling cars in America. Hyundai sold more than 3,000 Tucson models for a 129-percent increase over year-ago levels. -- Michelle Krebs, Senior Analyst and Editor at Large

Click here to comment on this entry.I'm sure the 18,935 number includes the heavily discounted 2009 models
Didnt Toyota sell well over 30k camrys last month? I wouldnt call that the same ballpark just yet. The Fusion outsold the Sonata with 22k units. A little pro Hyundai hyperbole is being employed here.
Yeah i wouldn't call it No. 1 yet, but definitely a significant improvement in sales and a well deserved one at that also.
The Sonata is simply a much better vehicle than Accord and Camry at this point. Kudos to Hyundai for coming up with a better mousetrap.
@tmanz
It's not like the other manufacturers aren't discounting 2009 models as well; not to mention that Hyundai has put less $$ on the hood than Toyota the past couple of months, and significantly less than Nissan.
2011 sonata with GDI 2.4 engine is simply superior and cheaper than competitions, period. Let us see next couple months or so how its sales figure behaves. 2.0 turbo charged engine & hybrid would be another factors in coming months.
I think car makers are starting to realize the great looking rims and how they carry lots of weight with the consumers.Just look at this Hyundai Sonata!!I can't wait to test drive it!!
