I am a car guy (engineer) working in the auto industry (do not work for Volvo) but I do work for a key Volvo supplier. Never owned a Volvo before my 2021 (S60) and I was so impressed that I also purchased an XC90 T5 for my wife. (In 30 years we have owned Nissan, Infiniti, Honda, VW, BMW, Cadillac and do not have any complaints about any of those brands. They were all trouble-free.) Knowing the history of the engines, I chose the T5 trim for both our S60 and XC90. Those that mention premature rebuild of engines due to excessive oil burning, yes, that has happened, especially with the early T5 engines from 2015-2018. Those issues were addressed with new piston rings so the new T5/T6 engines are usually flawless, except the supercharger on the T6 has had some premature failures. I prefer the T5 (2023 mild hybrid and called B5) because it is a much simpler engine design that has been in production for about 10 years now. Neither of our Volvos consume any appreciable amount of oil between oil changes. The T5 feels peppy enough as long as you're not driving a loaded car all the time. Due to the numerous issues with the Recharge (T8), I recommend to avoid it. The ride in the XC90 is great with no appreciable wind noise. It is solid and definitely the most solid car we have ever owned. The S60 is very much a tank just like the XC90. There are a ton of engineering safety features (real tangible things, not gimmicks) in the car that I would not spend time explaining here that are very unique and advantages that Volvo has over every other brand. For that reason alone, I bought my first Volvo. We usually keep cars for many years and so far it looks like this one will be like it. No issues at all from either of our Volvos. Just oil changes. Again, the trim level matters. The Recharge is a very complex car with new technology that works well but is not reliable. This applies to any other premium plug-in hybrid. Just be ready to deal with those issues and do not expect a vehicle so complex with tons of software and electronics to be as reliable as a pure gas car. Finally, I would like to say that the build quality is amazing. If you're into cars and work on them, you will notice that of Volvos immediately. Look under the car and it is a work of art. The organization of the components and quality of the build is second to none. The extensive use of aluminum is another indication that this car is definitely a premium vehicle.

XC-90 Recharge - The Good & The Bad

Lt Dan, 03/22/2022
2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid T8 Inscription 4dr SUV AWD w/6 Passenger Seating, Prod. End 11/21 (2.0L 4cyl Twincharger gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)

I have now had (3) XC-90's. Two T-6's and now the 2022 T-8 Inscription Recharge. Interior wise they are all essentially the same except the T-8 has a crystal shift knob. Sound systems are all the same and excellent. I had a loaner with the upgraded sound system in it and its not worth the extra $$$ IMO. So let's talk about the recharge hybrid functions that you likely won't understand just taking a test drive. I've got 20K on mine so I have a lot of drive time with it. The charging cable can be plugged in to a regular 110v outlet in your garage with the adapter that comes with the cable, it takes about 7 hours or so to fully charge. If you have a 220v connection installed you can use the other adapter it comes with and it charges in about 3 hours. A single charge is good for 20 miles. That's it! In my opinion 30-40 miles would be ideal. The hybrid mode varies the engine in between electric (under 70 mph) and gas when you have charge left, otherwise it's all gas all the time. There is substantial lag when you want/need to accelerate quickly in hybrid mode from a standing stop. I mean noticeably a lot, like 1/2 a second a lot. I should point out that the T-8 is NOT AWD all the time like the T-6 (and even that isn't really AWD all the time either) but I digress, you have to go into the menu and select AWD otherwise the car is front wheel drive. The vehicle apparently reserves some of the charge for AWD as the rear engine (rear wheel drive) is electric. To date I have never needed AWD even in the snow. Where is the 400 HP you may be wondering? Well if you change the drive mode from hybrid to sport now you get the full brunt of the 400 HP engine all the time, otherwise, meh, not really all that noticeable in hybrid mode. But, and here's the bad part of that, if you really stomp on it in sport mode, the car takes off like a shot, however, with borderline dangerous torque steer! So hang on to that steering wheel! The actual shifting into gear has 2 modes "D" for drive and "B" for battery. If you use "B" as you should, it charges the battery using your braking and the engine braking a little bit, but its something. The vehicle, for me, gets about 29 MPG average. I drive 24 miles each way to work and I don't have access to a charging station at work or I would be getting way more than that. The best way to drive/manage the vehicle's performance (not gas mileage) in my opinion, is run the vehicle in hybrid mode on local roads, it won't take much to run out the battery. I drive a big portion of my daily drive on the highway where the 400 HP is more of a necessity. So I switch to sport mode entering the highway and switch back to hybrid when I'm back to local. Sounds like a pain, and you don't have to do that, I'm saying how I do it. The XC-90 has a bunch of other features like reserve charge, etc, way too much to go into here. To summarize the XC-90 Recharge is a very nice vehicle. Period, full stop. But the hybrid functionality could use some work. The torque steer is a real issue if you drive aggressively, even occasionally, and the battery life needs improvement. Would I get another one? Given the current fuel prices probably yes.

Sadly what should’ve been a peach of a car is turned out to be more of a lemon! My first couple of months of the car I was extremely happy with my purchase. Then all the previously mentioned in other reviews issues with the batteries and the module (whatever that is) started. I have had to leave the car for three separate occasions totaling nearly two months as they had difficulties getting parts and what not. To make matters worse we don’t live near the Volvo service center so this has created major issues for us. Volvo is now a dirty word in our household. We wish we would have chosen something with better reliability and saved ourselves continuing headaches!

Stealth Luxury!

XC 90 Inscription hit all the key features that we were looking for and more without the outward appearance of high end luxury. It is just a Volvo (not a Mercedes or BMW!) Comfort was the first consideration. The driving experience, visibility, heads up display and lane keeping make longer drives a breeze. The seats in the car are amazing. Both the driver and the passenger have the same control features...both rare and a must! The interior quality is first rate, leather and wood. The Harman Kardon stereo is superb! The car is equipped with every safety feature currently available and more. Recently when the car detected a quick stop...the seatbelts retracted with modest force pulling us back into the seats...not a problem but a "safety surprise"! It is a big car that drives effortlessly just like a midsize (gas mileage is not the same however) but it is truly peppy. Given the paucity of cars in the market...we were quite lucky connecting with Valenti Volvo of Watertown, CT...they were the only dealer that only charged $500 dollars over invoice...not over list, but over invoice. All other dealers we visited (Kia, Ford, Subaru, etc. were charging over list(with $5 -10K typical) often with lengthy waits for a car that might be coming in. As promised our car was delivered on Christmas eve 2021...and they even provided a big red bow (like on TV). They were fantastic to work with. Long ago we had a Volvo station wagon...this is not your grand dads Volvo! So far so good we are very happy with our "stealth luxury car"!

Traded Up to XC90

8/24/22 Update: I'm still really impressed. The XC90 is a pleasure to drive and supremely comfortable. We're coming up on the first oil change, and that trip to the dealer will be the first time our Volvo has ever been back since we drove it off the lot. I've never owned a new vehicle that didn't have to go back to the dealer to resolve an issue in the first six months. Great quality, craftsmanship and reliability. My only complaints: the less-than-generous center console storage and the lack of cupholders. We traded an XC60 with 24,000 miles and essentially got what we paid for it new in 2018. Took the money and bought an XC90 because the cabin is more spacious for a family. Having some experience with Volvos, I knew I wanted one thing in our XC90: the T6 engine w/ AWD. The T5 in our XC60 lacked some oomph. In contrast, the T6 is incredibly powerful for a 2.0 four cylinder. I also enjoy the slight supercharger whine. Altogether, we ended up in a Momentum package with T6 AWD, blond interior in Crystal White with 21" wheels. It's beautiful. We've owned it for 3 months now and have only put about 2600 miles on it, but so far no trips back to the dealer for any bugs. Everything works as it should. Not surprising since the XC90 has been around for several years so most issues should be worked out by now. To make things even sweeter, the XC90 seems to be one of the few vehicles in this crazy car market that you can actually buy at or below MSRP.

Under The Radar Luxury!!

I was ready to pull the trigger on the BMW X5 xDrive40e. All the reviews were solid and my test drive confirmed I had made a good choice. However, just to be thorough, I wanted to compare the BMW with any other “potential” hybrid luxury SUV rivals (a fairly short list). I soon found myself at our local Volvo dealership. As soon as I sat in the seat of the XC90 R design Recharge extended range model, I couldn’t help but think…”this interior is so much nicer, cleaner, and modern than the BMW, why aren’t more of these on the road?” The seats and interior layout are the best I’ve seen in a vehicle. I took a test drive and thought the same thing. At 455HP, the vehicle is a rocket and again (when honest with myself) thought the same thing…“this engine is more sporty/powerful and the ride smoother than the X5, why aren’t more of these on the road?” When I reflected on the overall package offered and the impressive quality, image, value and luxury of the new extended range model, it became an easy decision for me to choose the XC90 over the X5. In addition, the XC 90 gave me a little more room and was simply more comfortable for the family. I also liked the sporty R design. Perhaps it’s the under the radar easy going humble (not flashy) approach of Volvo that I appreciate (not felt at BMW) or the minimalists, clean designs…whatever the case, it won me over. So far, so good. The incredible technology and safe drive systems are years ahead of rivals and yet kept in a low vis, easy to operate simple touch screen and digital dash. The vehicle, simply put, is really really smart. Currently getting 60-65 mpg as long as I charge it overnight (even on a regular 110V Garage charger). Truly impressed. I’ve had vehicle purchases I’ve second guessed in the past, and even this clocks in as the most expensive yet, but no second guessing here. Pretty phenomenal SUV!

6 month update: frustrating infotainment

6 month update: Volvo took a minimalist approach to their new (mid 2023) infotainment that we’re finding incredibly frustrating, which took away some worthwhile customization options. First to note, we had a 2020 R design and this is the inscription. I hate that they got rid of it. I liked the look and feel/ergonomics of the R design, but I get it, not a lot of folks looking for a sporty looking 7 seater Volvo I guess. My biggest gripe is that It’s a great car if it weren’t for a frustrating level of user experience based on taking away simple options. 1. Incredibly frustrating - The sound system. Volvo says it has optimized the sound experience so you only have 3 selections on sound customization and no ability to balance the sound, only to select forward, back or middle. Here is the issue: in the middle option, barely ANY SOUND comes out of the back speakers (middle row). Our kids can’t hear anything when the speakers are “centered.” We took it to the dealer and confirmed this is the same in other cars. Our salesperson was surprised also when we confirmed it. It is a big design flaw. A couple of other salespeople were there and also were surprised, but clearly tried to downplay it. It’s very very noticeable and even more frustrating when it’s a good set of speakers which we’re paying for, and there is no way to mitigate this. 2. They took away drive modes, so except for a box to check for steering feel (firm or soft) there’s nothing. No customization - again. 3. When a sensor goes off because something is close to the car, it immediately goes to a 360 view. This means that every time a pedestrian walks in front of your car close by (which happens a lot in the city) it goes to that view and starts beeping. There is NO WAY to turn it off. So if you are trying to look at your directions at a red light, and people are walking in front of your car, it switches screens and you can’t see your next turn. It gets annoying quickly. 4. This is small, but in our last car we could pick the interior lighting color. It was cool and frankly we liked it. It adds a level of fun/luxury which at this price point was appreciated. And now it’s just white lighting, no options. 5. Waze is finicky at best, still end up using Apple CarPlay. It also doesn’t play on the dash - just google maps. 6. You can’t see what media/song is playing unless you’re in the music app. So no ability to see it while using any navigation app. While the car overall is good, we’re very frustrated with the infotainment, especially compared to our 2020. This certainly didn’t feel like an upgrade, aside from the cooled seats, and actually felt downgraded with these missing important features. Also, we find this car lacks the steering feel of our 2020, but we get it’s not the R design. I will admit the engine is better in the B6, and our mileage is fantastic, it’s just a shame that the user experience is so frustrating. We thought we’d be Volvo lifers as we prefer the more subdued image vs the German rivals, and we LOVE the level of safety Volvo provides, but where before we thought it was a no-brainer to renew our lease, we’ll need to see if these changes are fixed or if we need to shop elsewhere. 6 month update: I moved my rating from 2 to 4 stars. Everything works and the car has been reliable. Service is generally top notch. However, I am still frustrated by the infotainment not showing what music is playing while on map view and not having the option for balance/fade on the speakers. While our mileage is pretty good, I miss some of the sporty characteristics and driving modes of the R design. I really really dislike chrome trim. I’m not saying it doesn’t look good, but it makes the car look like everything else. My overall assessment has not changed unfortunately. While we like the car, the lack of character really brought it down a notch for us from thinking we were going to stick with Volvo for a long time, to “it’s a really good car, but let’s shop around.” Hoping they fix that especially since they do offer dark trim and even blackout editions on the smaller models, and what they took away is some relatively easy and cheap things to fix/add. That doesn’t mean you should shy away from Volvo, they’re still fantastic cars and provide great service, we just miss the personality.

Worst XC90 EVER MADE! Do not buy it!

This car has had absolutely nothing but problems. The backup camera and sensors continue to violently engage the ‘rear brake intervention’ system when there’s nothing weekend. The entertainment system screen goes black, has double exposure of data, flashes intermittently and freezes. Apple CarPlay doesn’t display maps and shows a big black box in the driver screen. Google Maps doesn’t work in dashboard heads-up display. The trim around the vehicle was faulty from the day I purchased it, I was told it would be replaced…that was October. The part just came in two weeks ago. Volvo refuses to acknowledge there’s an issue. However, they did say there is a software update - IN APRIL! They are hoping this will fix many problems. But I shouldn’t have to wait 3 months for a POTENTIAL SOLUTION. This is a $80,000+ car, why are there so many problems? I don’t even have 1,500 miles on this car because it’s been in the shop so many times since I bought it in October. I’ve owned two previous new XC90s never have I had this amount of problems.

See past the hype for objective feedback.

2022 Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription 4dr SUV AWD w/6 Passenger Seating (2.0L 4cyl Twincharger 8A)

If you're willing to recognize that 5 star reviews tend to be emotional and overhyped you can then focus on objective feedback. It's a luxury suv. It's very nice made with lots of attention to detail and perfection, especially with the inscription package. Great soft leather, great handling and a very clever power train. It's surprisingly spacious in the 2nd row but the 3rd row is for kids only. The car is very "soft footed" - it seems to want to roll down the road with a very sensitive, yet smooth power train. The AWD handles very well, on par with other performance cars. The MPGs are not bad for the weight of the car and the fact that there 316 horsies under the hood. It is worth noting that the insurance rates for this car are decent, at least as of July 2022. Now with the praises aside, the car does not represent good value because: - Volvo in all their wisdom does not allow you to start your car remotely unless you pay for their smartphone app. A 20K Honda allows you to precool or preheat your car, but Volvo will want you to pay extra to do the same. - The car software is far from smart. It does not: a) store your driving profile (eco, dynamic, etc.) and resets it on every start even though it manages to store every other aspect of your settings b) Is bloated with garbage values that are tied to subscription such as weather etc that comes from Sirius XM. If you don't care to renew the subscription you'll be left with many display items on the main screen that don't do much. - The car does not come with a printed manual. The online manual is a joke and who the heck has the time to sit and try to figure out the manual uploaded into the center console. There is not such thing as a PDF you can print or use to learn about your car's features. You can order one for 55 bucks but they seem to be "out of stock for a while". For a 70K car to not come with a manual -- that's a joke, it has to be. Last time I checked even the bottom of the barrel cars came with a printed reference manual, especially since there are many features on the car. - The online support from Volvo for this car is extremely disorganized. There is a 2022 "early" and 2022 "late" division for features and support and good luck finding which one applies to your car. Volvo is very disorganized with their online consumer support. The dealer won't tell you which one you're getting cause they don't want to be stuck with early models that no one wants to buy. Yet the website shows completely different configurations for the 2022 model then what you will find on the lot. How about that for mid year changes? - The 360 camera and rear view camera always starts in the same view. No way to default it to your preferred view for parking assistance. You'll simply always have to mess with buttons if you want a different view. - The FOBs button placement is baffling. Try to operate it and see if you like it. Hint: you won't. - The lane keeping "pilot" will put your car left of center of the lane, waay to close for comfort of not being nicked by cars on the left. Turns out the pilot keeping system it's really a useless feature. - The sunroof switch controls the shade and the sunroof. If you by mistake push it the wong way the shade operation can't be stopped so you have to wait for the shade to close so that you can open it and then open the sunroof. A bit primitive. - The car allows for only 2 profiles. If you have 3rd driver in the family that has their own preference and would like for him to not have to mess with all the settings -- well, this is not the car for you. 25K ford does a better job at it than Volvo. - Take a look if you have a place to put a pair or two of sunglasses. Especially if you are placing 2 pairs so that they would be easily accessed by the driver and passenger. - Need to store a quarter and some dimes? Good luck . This car embraced the national coin shortage and thus is not equipped with any coin slots. After all, if you pay 70K why would you bother carrying change. - The steering wheel tilt and telescoping feature is manual and will not be stored with your driver profile. You'll be "base modeling" it if you want to adjust it between driver profiles. - if you're test driving the car, pay attention to the road and wind noise - a 20 year of F150 does a better job at insulating the noises than this car. - Volvo is converting to an electric company which should make you wonder about parts availability for their gas models in 10, 15 years. If you're shopping for a gas model, take a look at the direction of the company and see how it will factor in your resale or maintenance cost in the future. - The resale value is mediocre but that's pretty much true for all the cars in this class. Knowing that, if you're looking at this car, look at these items as you're test driving it and see if they will spoil the car for you. For me, I just don't feel that the value is there. Close, but no cigar.

Bought a 2022 Volvo XC90 Momentum 7 passenger 4wd. Nice looking car on the outside, had standard stereo, nav, Sensus system. All the standard driver safety tech. Fit and finish wasn’t great. The car developed a rattle inside the passenger door. Also blind spot monitor would come on and stay on randomly, even when no one was in the blind spot. Took it to the dealer. Couldn’t fix either issue. Lots of Turbo lag, poor gas mileage. Third row will fit children under 10, no adults. Too bad, because it was a well designed car.

6K miles and Already need a Rebuilt Engine!

Bought a New XC 90 for my Wife because I wanted her in one of the Safest cars on the road. We really liked the car at first, was hoping it would last at least 10 years? Volvo offered oil changes every 10K miles, 4 oil changes given, but I felt it was too long for oil changes, so I decided to change oil myself when the car had 6K miles. First, I made sure that I could get the oil level on the radio screen, I knew something was wrong when I only had one bar left on the scale, then, when I changed the oil, I was missing almost 2 quarts of oil for a 5 quart engine. I was not happy with the car already. The next month, we had " Volvo on call, serviced required" on the dash. Well, I already reset the maintenance light with the oil change, so I took it to the Dealer the next morning, they told me I need to make an appointment, their about 10 days to 2 weeks before they could even look at the car, Really! I asked them if the car had stopped and was told in, could they look at it then? They said still 2 weeks! We only have 1 car. Then, the Sales people said that several customers said they have the same thing on their dash and the Dealer is trying to figure it out? On the way home from the Volvo Dealer, we passed a Hyundai Dealer, and we traded in the Volvo for the Hyundai Palisade, much better SUV. Of course, Volvo's have a Terrible resale value, I knew that when I bought it, also, Geely, the Chinese, owns Volvo, I knew that when I bought the POS. Next day, drove my New Palisade to Volvo dealer to return my Volvo oil filters for refund, I told them about the 2 quarts missing when I did the oil change, and a Mechanic pulled me aside and said that Volvo has BIG PROBLEMS! They are now rebuilding 2016, 2017, 2018 models right now if the owners have maintenance warranties, and he said that mine would have been tag for a rebuilt job on it's First oil change. Pathetic at best, Do Not Buy!

Overall a very good vehicle except for the Pirelli tires. This is the 2nd vehicle I've owned that came with this brand stock and they have NOT lasted. Need to replace all four at 25K miles. There are better tires that cost less and last longer. These are junk.

New 2023 XC90 Hybrid

Took delivery 3 weeks ago after owning the 2016 XC90. Love the new hybrid. Much quieter and smoother ride than my 2016 and I have it without air suspension. Love using the Pure electric mode. Have not used any gas in the entire three weeks of ownership in my day to day 10 mile round trip work commute. Love the new Google interface of the infotainment system. Much needed improvement over the old system. Much easier to use overall with easy access to temperature controls and much improved navigation system using Google Maps. So far I love it. Plug-in hybrid and changes for 2023 make it quite an improvement with much appreciated differences compared to my previous 2016 XC90.

I've had my '23 XC90 Ultimate just over a month and am extremely disappointed. The blind spot monitor doesn't light when it should. It also gets stuck on and doesn't go off. There is an annoying squeaky noise when the brake pedal is released. Service has lubricated and checked the pedal but it did not fix the noise. XM allows you to replay about 15 min. of their stations; however, Volvo is not set up with "Replay". Very aggravating if you turn to a station and want to replay to catch the conversation they were having. But the most concerning thing is the amount of force it takes to stop the hatch when it's coming down. It doesn't stop when it touches an object, it continues until it's pushed the object to the floor then reverses. Very dangerous. I've owned Suburbans, Toyotas, and Jeeps. None of them have had issues like this Volvo. One month in, I hate to think of what might be going on with it a year from now.

I have owned a 2022 Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription for over one year. Not a single problem, extremely reliable. No warranty problems, Great highway cruiser, easy 27 mpg. Very solid and everything works great. Need some time to understand the all the controls, but once everything is set, not much else to do. All the passive safty features are great and wok very well, especially the auto-cruise control features. Quiet, comfortable and a joy to drive!

The Volvo XC90 is a great looking car and very comfortable however there are major mechanical and quality issues with this car. My experience has been awful. At 11,000 miles the brakes went and rotors had to be replaced. Additionaly I had the sunroof leaking water into the car and leaving a musty smell in the car. The infotainment system sometimes blacks out while driving and isn’t very responsive when trying to turn on heating seats, radio and temperature. The transmission has to be re programmed because it was sticking in gear and wouldn’t downshift and hesitates. The engine is a bizzare power train and isn’t predictable on power. Overall very poor quality vehicle. Looks and interior comfort only go so far. May I add I only have 14k miles on the car!! Can’t wait til lease is up. Someone would have to pay me money to drive another Volvo.

I owned an XC90 for 6 years, and purchased a new ones less than 2 months ago 2022 XC90. Parked the car at night and totally fine with absolutely no accident or going over pot holes or anything. Next morning, got out of my drive way and the moment I tried to turn the wheel, there was no control and the car started sliding in one direction for a bit and then other and brakes didn't work and finally fit the curb and stopped. I got it to towed to the dealership and they said that there are no issues and the issues (broken axle, power steer broke, and tons other) because the car hit the curb. I'm EXTREMELY concerned, because the car had no control. Why did it hit the curb, why did the brakes not work and dealership is denying any issues. What if there were kids in the neighborhood like always or me driving on the highway? This has been the worst experience with cars ever.

So last week we traded in our Audi Q5 for an XC90 Ultimate. After driving it for a little over a week and about 150 miles I can make a few comments. First off if you don’t have 20/20 vision you’ll hate the key. Not sure what they were thinking as the controls on the FOB are too small to see. I don’t understand just why all the controls are on the screen as the last thing you want to do while driving is take your eyes off the road. Thank goodness many of the controls can be verbally controlled by google. Even the vibrating seat needs to be controlled from the screen and doesn’t have a timer to turn it off. The car drives very lose like a boat not like our BMW or our Audi which has much better road feel. Now the positives! The interior of the car is stunning . The seats are super comfortable .The Bowers & Wilkinson stereo maybe the best I’ve ever heard. The $1800 air ride will take some getting used to so I won’t comment. There are a ton of what I’d call amenities in the car. The GPS is great . The ride when on a straightaway is ok and I guess on a long ride won’t tire you out. I highly suggest they have some older individuals be involved in the design and controls as they will probably be 75% of the buyers at $78,000. I’ll follow up at a later date once my mind can wrap around all the IT crap. I miss my Audi! Oh we do feel VERY safe driving this huge machine . Update after 6,000 miles. I’m starting to think some the reason I didn’t love this beast was the lousy dealer prep. So much for the $1000 prep charge. After rotating and BALANCING the tires ( which the dealer never did ) the car drives much better. Electronics are still a pain but I can deal with it. Would I ever buy another Volvo. NO! UPDATE: We’ve owned this SUV for almost 2 years . Certainly feel safe in case of an accident and it does really well on fuel economy for its size but that’s where the good stops. The google infotainment system D- . I’ve never had as many issues with an $80,000 car EVER. The car has every available option and I’ve should have known that there would be issues. I hate the fact that we’ll be losing so much money trading it in but the aggravation factor is not worth my health. The upgraded stereo is amazing and at least playing it load helps take away the road noise . For a heavy SUV with the $1800 air suspension you’d expect a nice comfortable quiet ride . NOPE I’m going back to Audi where they actually care .

Our 2018 Inscription is back in the shop for its 3rd Air Conditioner repair. This one is not even covered by warranty because the warranty lapsed last month while it was in the shop for the 2nd AC repair, and the dealership won't stand behind its work. On Saturday, the key fobs stopped working. Our local Volvo dealer, Bergeron Volvo, has a terrible Service Dept., and is backed up for weeks. They never have loaners available. We've owned Mercedes, Acura, Porsche, Tesla and Infiniti, and Volvo is the worst.

Looks better than it is. The NAV is nearly worthless. I plug in my phone and use Google maps. I have to plug it in on long trips anyway because the charging pad doesn’t charge iPhone 12s (look it up). Cruise control varies - set it at 70, expect 67 to 72. I cannot get the HUD to show on the windshield…except for cruise setting and speed limit. No map or traffic data. Hint: my third car with (alleged) HUD. The 2” receiver is clever, but too short for my bike rack. I had to get a metal saw. I could go on. As I said, I’m looking on. And won’t be a Volvo. By the way, my light came on for the one year service reminder. I called the dealer…8 weeks.

Shopped for large suv to replace 7 year old Expedition and this won the tests. Can carry quite a bit in back and will cart 7 people with all the seats deployed. Plenty of power for a big suv. We enjoy the convenience of computers but there was a learning curve for using normal controls. Voice control works well but better for my wife than for me.

I love the simplicity of the cabin, and the slightly better fuel economy over the B6, as well as the cost savings from the T8. Adaptive cruse controll practically drives the car for you, and the google integration is fantastic! No more wires for carplay/android auto. Very VERY happy with this XC90 trim (purchased after owning the T6 Inscription, and B5 plus is vastly superior in my oppinion).

We are only three months into leasing this car. It takes some time to get to know the Android OS that controls it. YouTube videos help. Then disaster struck. Waiting at an intersection, the car ahead didn't move, and the car behind decided to reverse, and then go into the oncoming lane to move ahead. He forgot to put it in reverse, and nailed it straight into the Volvo's rear. Disgusting feeling to know you have been hit. The car is now at the body shop. Will have been out of service for three weeks when we get it back. And this is why the jury is out! Will they be able to repair it? Sure, the rear parts will be replaced and it will look fine, BUT will the complex sensors - software function as before? It was all fine before the accident, but this does not mean it will all be fine afterwards. Repairing complex system cars can go beyond the abilities of body shops and even the Volvo dealers. I will come back with an update once we get it back.

This is a beautiful vehicle in oh so many ways. For my wife and I, it came down to the T8 or a Mercedes GLE450, and Mercedes won. We didn’t need the XC90’s third row and didn’t like the cargo space floor with the seats down, but we could have lived with that. We found the Mercedes more powerful, but could have lived with the T8’s power. We liked Mercedes’ interactive tech better, but could have lived with Volvo’s. The real killer? The sun visor!! Volvo’s is cheap, small, and doesn’t telescope, and that we could not live with.

Traded in my Mercedes GLE 350 for it and couldn’t be happier. When driving around town i typically average 80-100mpg. It’s more comfortable, sportier and more luxurious than either our previous GLE or BMW X5. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another m.

The air suspension works when it wants to, along with assist, lane keep assist, the controls on the seats, how you have to access the heat and air. I can’t even say it feels like luxury! It’s uncomfortable, not big enough, no storage space, the app is horrible, it doesn’t show you anything useful except to start the car. No cup holders, 2 small ones in the front and 2 small ones in the middle seat. I like the Bowers and Wilkins stereo, and massage seats. Please try to test drive and see how much this car holds. UPDATE: This Volvo has been the biggest disappointment of any car we've ever leased or purchased out of the new cars and trucks we have purchased every 2-3 years for the past 40 years. We have contacted Volvo several times about the issues we are having and taken it in three times to have the problem resolved. I live in a rural area with backroads, and they say the mapping system called City View does not work well on backroads, so they are not able to replicate the problem when it is taken in for them to look at. I have been in constant communications with our saleslady Sara, she is WONDERFUL and has been most helpful. She also has documentation of everything, and a few videos. She did see when I came to pick the car up three weeks ago, that it doesn’t understand a lot of our commands. The car jerks the steering wheel from me into oncoming traffic, off the road, then tells me it avoided a collision when it almost caused a collision. Hey Google, does not understand either of us, the slight chance it does, it does not do what we have requested. I do have a video showing different things that the car does. It seems to have a mind of its own, I do not feel safe driving this car any longer. It isgoing to cause us to have an accident. I Purchased the car because I thought Volvo was the safest vehicle there was to buy or lease. Now my feelings have changed I am afraid to even drive the car to the point I am having to borrow my Mother’s car. The door on the driver side turns the vehicle off when it’s opened 10 out of 100 times, I typically have my elderly mother with me so I must go back in the car to turn it on so my mother can have air conditioning while she is waiting on me. The seats are the most uncomfortable seats I’ve ever sat in! You don’t know a lot of these things until you drive it awhile. This car drives my BP up and hurts my body. I even have a note from my dr saying how much pain and stress it causes my body. I met a tractor last week and the steering just went crazy, it was all over the road, and I was having to really fight it. My husband says he feels as if he has driven a tractor trailer all day when we get home from the trip to Richmond to the doctors because he hast to fight the steering wheel the entire day. It is very frustrating to drive this car, especially when commands are not understood by Hey Google. You never know when you can relax your hand on the wheel. You never know when it’s going to just veer off to the right or to the left into oncoming traffic or off the road, then tell you it avoided a collision! It almost caused a collision! We’ve had a Yukon Denali, Hyundai Palisade calligraphy a Buick enclave and a Tahoe. Previously all these vehicles had the same safety features, and the Hyundai did better than any of them. I feel that the 2023 Volvo vehicles lost so many features from the previous models as well as the new models coming out. If you look at the forums most everyone is very dissatisfied with the 23 Volvo for a lot of the same reasons. They continue to tell me at the dealership that it all depends on the road you're driving on well I feel like that should be a disclaimer that Volvo should give before you purchase one so that you know the area that you drive in it won't work. One dealership advised me to turn it off. I pay a lot of money for these features, and need them as well. I paid 79,000 for this car a year ago, it has everything on it. Volvo financial said they will take the car back and we pay them 18,000.00. I don’t mind taking a 5-8,000 hit I’m also losing the money I put down on the car and the equity in the car I traded in. The radio doesn’t turn on when you start the car, you have to take your eyes off of the road to go into the center screen to press play. The air suspension goes down after we exit the car, the screens go black a lot, my key fob keeps losing connection with the car so I don’t even have that, the app loses connection too, I’ve fixed that 3 times. You have to have both keys to reset it and be in the car. In my opinion, the car is extremely small, no storage space and 2 cup holders in the front and 2 in the second row that don’t even fit a McDonald’s drink. It was sold to us as a very minimalist, easy car for older people. It’s anything but user friendly.

Since day 1, one of the keys is not recognized in the vehicle and continues to prevent the vehicle as "key has been removed", no it has not. Took for service to correct issue 3 separate times, no resolution yet. Apparently it takes Volvo over 7 business days to even document a phone conversation w/their support team - and no follow up thereafter other than an automated email suggesting they'll get back to me. Why buy new cars if they belong in Service 3x in less than 1 year.

24 hour review of my new (to me) 2022 XC90 Recharge. Bought the car in Oregon, drove back to Seattle on the day of purchase and thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the car. First impressions: - Lane assist and auto pilot are handier features than I would have guessed. - The drivetrain is plenty powerful while delivering 30.5 mpg over 180 miles of mostly highway driving. -The touch screen control has a lot going on, but was able to navigate fairly easily and much more intuitive than any Audi’s I’ve had. - Ride quality is quiet and confident for such a large car - Interior is nicely appointed and not cluttered. - Some controls will need a review of the manual to understand, as there are a lot of options.

Seats are way too narrow, they cut corners for sure. The ride is ok but choppy on rougher roads, the engine did not sound super smooth as it should for a small turbo. The reliability looks to be average to below average, they need to step it up and get with the program. The safety is good, but many are good now, not just Volvo. Shop around.

Went from a 2020 XC90 to a 2023 XC90. Handling and acceleration is better but entertainment system is back to the 90's. No Android Auto, only Aople Play. WHY? Main display only shiw speedometer, tachometer and Google Maps in the middle. There are no other options. I hate Google maps, I want WAZE in the middle but because there is no Android Auto, I can't have it. The needs to be a major software update to address these shortcomings in a luxury SUV.

This SUV is truly one of the best vehicles out there and I’ve found it to be amazing. I considered Lexus, BMW, and Audi…the XC90 topped them all.
